He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Easter EveLighting of the New Fire (it is brought into the church from the front door and all light their candles from it)

Priest: The Light of Christ! All Thanks be to God! ( x 3 )

Exsultet (an ancient hymn sung by the priest)

Old Testament: Exodus 12.21-28Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons for ever. And when you come to the land that the Lord will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service. And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’” And the people bowed their heads and worshipped. Then the people of Israel went and did so; as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Holy Baptism

THE PREPARATIONThe Priest shall begin as follows

DEARLY beloved, forasmuch as all men are conceived and born in sin, (and that which is born of the flesh is flesh,) and they that are in the flesh cannot please God, but live in sin, committing many actual transgressions; and that our Saviour Christ says, none can enter into the kingdom of God, except he be regenerate and born anew of Water and of the Holy Spirit; I beseech you to call upon God the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that of his bounteous

goodness he will grant to this person that which by nature she cannot have; that she may be baptized with Water and the Holy Spirit, and received into Christ's holy Church, and be made lively members of the same.

Communion Hymn: 162 Ye choirs of new Jerusalem

1 Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, the paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy.

2 How Judah's Lion burst his chains, and crushed the serpent's head; and brought with him, from death's domains the long-imprisoned dead.

3 From hell's devouring jaws the prey alone our leader bore; his ransomed hosts pursue their way where he has gone before.

4 Triumphant in his glory now his sceptre ruleth all; earth, heaven and hell before him bow and at his footstool fall.

5 While joyful thus his praise we sing, his mercy we implore, into his palace bright to bring and keep us evermore.

6 All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost to thee, while endless ages run.

Words: Chorus novae Jerusalem, Fulbert of Chartres, (ca. 960-1028);trans. Robert Campbell (1814-1868), 1850)

Music: St. Fulbert (Henry John Gauntlett, 1805-1876)

Post Communion Hymn: 138 At the Lamb’s high feast we sing

1 At the Lamb's high feast we sing praise to our victorious King, who hath washed us in the tide flowing from his pierced side; praise we him, whose love divine gives his sacred Blood for wine, gives his Body for the feast, Christ the victim, Christ the priest.

2 Where the Paschal blood is poured, death's dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go

3 Mighty victim from on high, hell's fierce powers beneath thee lie; thou hast conquered in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light: now no more can death appall, now no more the grave entrall; thou hast opened paradise,  and in thee thy saints shall rise.

4 Easter triumph, Easter joy, sin alone can this destroy; from sin's power do thou set

through the wave that drowns the foe. Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal victim, Paschal bread; with sincerity and love eat we manna from above.

free souls newborn, O Lord, in thee. Hymns of glory and of praise, Risen Lord, to thee we raise; Holy Father, praise to thee, with the Spirit, ever be.

Offertory Hymn: 141 Christ the Lord is risen today

1 Christ the Lord is risen again!Christ hath broken every chain!Hark! angelic voices cry, singing evermore on high,Alleluia!

2 He who gave for us his life, who for us endured the strife,is our Paschal Lamb today;we too sing for joy, and say: Alleluia!

3 He who bore all pain and losscomfortless upon the crosslives in glory now on high, pleads for us, and hears our cry;Alleluia!

4 He whose path no records tell,Who descended into hell,Who the strong man armed hath bound,Now in highest heaven is crowned.Alleluia!

5 He who slumbered in the graveis exalted now to save;through the universe it ringsthat the Lamb is King of kings:Alleluia!

6 Now he bids us tell abroadhow the lost may be restored, how the penitent forgiven, how we too may enter heaven.Alleluia!

7 Thou, our Paschal Lamb indeed,Christ, thy ransomed people feed;take our sins and guilt away, that we all may sing for ayeAlleluia!

Let us pray.

Priest Almighty and everlasting God, who of your great mercy did save Noah and his family in the ark from perishing by water; and also did safely lead the children of Israel your people through the Red Sea,figuring thereby your holy Baptism; and by the Baptism of your well-beloved Son Jesus Christ, in the river Jordan, did sanctify the element of water to the mystical washing away of sin: We beseech you, for your infinite mercies, that you will mercifully look upon this your servant; wash her and sanctify her with the Holy Spirit; that she, being delivered from your wrath, may be received into the ark of Christ's Church; and being stedfast in faith, joyful through hope, and rooted in charity, may so pass the waves of this troublesome world, that finally she may come to the land of everlasting life, there to reign with you world without end, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Priest Almighty and immortal God, the aid of all that need, the helper of all that flee to you for succour, the life of them that believe, and the resurrection of the dead: We call upon you for this person, that she, coming to your holy Baptism, may receive remission of her sins by spiritual regeneration. Receive her, O Lord, as you have promised by your well-beloved Son, saying, Ask, and you shall have; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you: So give now to us that ask; let us that seek find; open the gate to us that knock; that this person may enjoy the everlasting benediction of your heavenly washing,

and may come to the eternal kingdom which you have promised by Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

All Almighty and everlasting God, heavenly Father, we give you humble thanks that you have vouchsafed to call us to the knowledge of your grace and faith in you: Increase this knowledge, and confirm this faith in us evermore. Give your Holy Spirit to this person, that she may be born again, and be made an heir of everlasting salvation, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.  Amen.

THE BAPTISMAL VOWS

Then shall the people stand up, the priest shall speak to the persons to be baptized:WELL-BELOVED, who are come here desiring to receive holy Baptism, you have heard how the Congregation has prayed that our Lord Jesus Christ would vouchsafe to receive you and bless you, to release you of your sins, to give you the kingdom of heaven and everlasting life. You have heard also that our Lord Jesus Christ has promised in his holy Word, to grant all those things that we have prayed for; which promise he, for his part, will most surely keep and perform. Wherefore, after this promise made by Christ, you must also faithfully, for your part, promise in the presence of these your witnesses, and this whole Congregation, that you will renounce the devil and all his works, and constantly believe God's holy Word, and obediently keep his commandments. Then shall the priest demand of each of the persons to be baptized these Questions.

Question. Do you renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the carnal desires of the flesh, so that thou will not follow nor be led by them?

Answer. I renounce them all.

Question. Do you believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth? And in Jesus Christ his only-begotten Son our Lord? And that he was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; that he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; that

he went down into hell, and also did rise again the third day; that he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; and from thence shall come again at the end of the world, to judge the living and the dead?

Resurrection, Giotto di Bodone

Sermon

Choir Anthem

- 7 -New Testament: Colossians 3:1-7If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 145 Good Christians all, rejoice and sing! 1 Good Christians all, rejoice and sing! Now is the triumph of our King! To all the world glad news we bring: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

2 The Lord of life is risen for ay: bring flowers of song to strew his way; let all the earth rejoice and say: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

3 Praise we in songs of victory that Love, that Life, which cannot die, and sing with hearts uplifted high: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

4 Thy name we bless, O risen Lord, and sing to-day with one accord the life laid down, the life restored: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Words: Cyril A. Alington (1872-1955)Music: Gelobt sei Gott (Melchior Vulpius, ca. 1560-1615

Gospel Acclamation:Alleluia  (3x)I am the first and the last, says the Lord, and the living one; I was dead, and behold I am alive for evermore. Alleluia  (3x)

The Gospel: St Matthew 28:1-7The Gospel is announced, we respond: Glory to you, O Lord

Now after the Sabbath, towards the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven

Page 8: Web viewopen the gate to us ... You have heard also that our Lord Jesus Christ has promised in his holy Word, ... and manfully to fight under his banner

and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ

- 4 -

And do you believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the Remission of sins; the Resurrection of the flesh; and everlasting life after death?

Answer. All this I stedfastly believe.

Question. Will you be baptized in this faith?Answer. That is my desire.

Question Will you then obediently keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of your life?Answer. I will try to do so, God being my helper.

THE BAPTISMThe shall the Priest say,

O MERCIFUL God, grant that the old Adam in this person may be so buried,

that the new man may be raised up in her. Amen.

Grant that all carnal affections may die in her, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in her. Amen.

Grant that she may have power and strength, to have victory, and to triumph against the devil, the world, and the flesh. Amen.

Grant that she, being here dedicated to you by our office and ministry, may also be endued with heavenly virtues, and everlastingly rewarded, through thy mercy, O blessed Lord God, who does live, and govern all things, world without end. Amen.

ALMIGHTY everliving God, whose most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of our sins, did shed out of his most precious side both water and blood; and gave commandment to his disciples, that they should go teach all nations, and baptize them in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: Regard, we beseech you, the supplications of this Congregation; sanctify this Water to the mystical washing away of sin; and grant that the person now to be baptized therein

Page 9: Web viewopen the gate to us ... You have heard also that our Lord Jesus Christ has promised in his holy Word, ... and manfully to fight under his banner

may receive the fulness of your grace, and ever remain in the number of your faithful and elect children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

- 5 -

Then shall the priest take the person to be baptized by the right hand, and placing her conveniently by the Font, according to his discretion, shall ask the Godfathers and Godmothers the Name; and then shall dip her in the water, or pour water upon her, saying,

N. I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then shall the Priest say,WE receive this person into the Congregation of Christ's flock; and *do sign her with the sign of the Cross, in token that hereafter she shall not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner against sin, the world, and the devil, and to continue Christ's faithful soldier and servant unto her life's end. Amen.

*Here the Priest shall make a Cross upon the person's forehead.

PRAYERS AFTER BAPTISM

SEEING now, dearly beloved, that this person is regenerate and grafted into the body of Christ's Church, let us give thanks unto Almighty God for these benefits, and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that she may lead the rest of her life according to this beginning.

Then shall be said, all kneelingAll OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.  Amen.

Priest WE yield you humble thanks, O heavenly Father, that you have vouchsafed to call us to the knowledge of your grace and faith in you; Increase this knowledge, and confirm this faith in us evermore. Give your Holy Spirit to this person; that, being now born again, and made an heir of everlasting salvation, through our Lord Jesus Christ, she may continue your servant, and attain your promises; through the same Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you,

Page 10: Web viewopen the gate to us ... You have heard also that our Lord Jesus Christ has promised in his holy Word, ... and manfully to fight under his banner

in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, everlastingly.

All Amen.

We put our candles as the lights come on!

Christ our passover is ’ sacrificed ’ for us: therefore ’ let us ’ keep the ’ feast;

Not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of ’ malice and ’ wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sin’ceri’ty and ’ truth. Christ being raised from the dead ’ dieth no ’ more:

death hath no ’ more do’minion ’ over him. For in that he died, he died unto ’ sin ’ once:

but in that he liveth, he ’ liveth ’ unto ’ God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed ’ unto ’ sin: but alive unto God, through ’ Jesus ’ Christ our ’ Lord. Christ is ’ risen from the ’ dead: and become the ’ first-fruits of ’ them that ’ slept. For since by ’ man came ’ death: by man came also the resur’rection ’ of the ’ dead. For as in Adam ’ all ’ die:

even so in Christ shall ’ all be ’ made a’live. Glory be to the Father ‘ and to • the ‘ Son: and ‘ to the ‘ Holy ’ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ‘ now and • ever ‘ shall be: world with-out ‘ end. A ‘ — ‘ men.

We continue with the Easter Liturgy book on page 1.

The Collect:Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ has overcome death, and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: We humbly beseech you, that as by your special grace you put into our minds good

desires, so by your continual help we may bring the same to good effect; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.
