CdS: There will be a list of criteria defining financial difficulty
Candidate will fill in a form and write accompanying statement
If criteria is fulfilled, candidate will eligible to enter into lottery system to be all out/all in for placement this will be of help financially if all out and will enable candidate to plan if all in
Funding office are keen to help
Faculty are also in support of it
David Cahill says if it gets put through, this will leave a legacy as it has never been done before
Those in financial difficulty will be prioritised
Others who will be prioritised include those with dependants, those who care for others etc.
Freshers matters (booklet/freshers fair)
Volunteer to follow up sponsorship
AP JC happy to confirm current sponsors and target others
Galenicals card, freshers booklet,
Sports reps want to attend the freshers fair to target medic freshers before they get scooped up by the university
TL lady organising stalls at the freshers fair responded, saying that allocation of a stall has to go through CdS
TL & JM AP to forward email thread to CdS so she can confirm stall at freshers fair
AP every member of the committee must be at freshers fair, it is compulsory
Creative history of medicine
CdS: Idea potentially being developed for HBom and WPC
CdS: Will this be an idea medical students will be interested in?
CdS: Will a talk on this subject be something medical students will be interested in?
JM very niche sub set of people, namely med humanities
CdS do we have a sub-society that has an interest in medical humanities?
AM only IME, recently affiliated
ES potentially target medical humanities intercalators, as they will be more interested
AP CdS to ask who runs med humanities as they will be more interested
Ublend
CdS: Launch of an app based events platofrom at bristol
CdS: Great success at Oxford (launched last year)
CdS: no financial expense on our part
CdS: Easier and more engaging for students to see whats going on in campus
CdS: Its an app galenicals has no control over
However we can send out newsletters and push notifications over it
CdS: Shall we go for it? Or continue with Rich Bosworth?
General consensus lets stick to Richard Bosworth
LN what if it works really well and all the students are on it?
ES we dont want to wait till that point and miss the boat
JB have we had an issue reaching our people in the past?
CdS not necessarily, but we do want to be better with social media
TL difficult to feed in all sub-societies and organise logistics
JC wont it help to bring all Galenicals sub societies together?
CdS not necessarily because it is every society at Bristol, not limited to Galenicals
JB has UBlend approached anyone else in the university?
CdS not sure
JB we should wait till another society in the university launches it and see how well it is received
CdS ok we will hold fire till then, the answer will be no fro now
AP CdS to forward information from UBlend Shamus
Kite Marks
CdS: Bristol sustainability kite mark if you reach 500 points, you can gain points in many different ways, e.g.:
Advertise via social media
Appoint a sustainability leader
Run an event with an environmental/sustainability spin
Write FB post/blog entry to detail what youve done to be more sustainable
CdS: Galenicals was approached because of how much money we raised via freshers cake sale, CLIC and bar crawl
Also because Bristol is supposed to be green capital of the city
CdS: We could easily achieve it
Good for uni and society if we win the award
LN: so we can put their logo on things and show everyone we have achieved this award
CdS: yes good for the society/Galenicals and the uni
CdS: Would anyone like to volunteer to be sustainability officer for the society?
AP LN, volunteered to be sustainability officer
3. Vice President Amy Samson
Tea Party- (TBC) will be at 4pm Sunday 27th September at Wills
AS: So the charity Above and Beyond (seem to have contacted the whole of galenicals!) but they want to essentially use the medics tea party as a fundraising event for their charity! As far as i know there has never been any cost to students to attend and I dont think there should be a fixed cost as the primary aim is to gather freshers together in an informal non-intoxicated environment! I think its probably a great idea to add a charity element, so just donations if students want to, no fixed price as such. So two questions, do we agree, and if so what charity - are we happy with Above and Beyond?
CdS: yes they can have a table and ask for donation, but they cannot charge people or take over the event
AP AM to pass this on to Amy
AP AM to clarify affiliation issue with Liv of Above & Beyond
ES: if just one charity is allowed do we have to allow others?
CdS: other charities are welcome, we can have a general pot and split the money?
TL: they should pay to use our events, like a set fee otherwise, youd open the flood gates and all our events would be inundated with charities
CdS: We will let Above & Beyond attend but we will not publicise it, keep it under the radar
AS: On this point Im on the search for a talented piano player that can play at Wills - any takers/leads we can explore?!
AP AS to ask Eliane Blows
LN: Liv from Above and beyond keeps pestering me to be on the committee, sending me minutes of meetings etc.
They are really keen but they do not have many society members
AP LN to explain kindly, but firmly that she cannot be on the committee of Above & Beyond
Medics Fresh
Hopefully you all know the date 4th October itll run from 11.00-16.00 but the main committee help well need will be in setting up and clearing up, so keep your diaries free!
On this point are we any further in deciding how were going to do galenicals cards this year?
CdS: Chinedu brought card machie and laptop with programme installed for the machine to my home,
CdS we have been sponsored 300 to have them printed, and have a box of plain cards
AP CdS to attempt to get machine up and running
CdS: TC was hunting around to find places to get cards printed
CdS: everyone in every year group will have cards, because sponsors are covering costs
Mums and Dads
Who organises the mums and dads event is it the ents reps or the course ents reps? I feel its maybe the course ents reps? Just want to clarify theres no current date for that event before I send all the emails out
ES and AH to plan event
AP ES to email AS regarding details of event, once finalised
AP all to put in diaries: 14th Oct Sports dinner
Intercalators Mums and Dads
Thoughts on organising some kind of canap event for them to get more out of the mums and dads schemedid this happen anyway last year?
CdS Yes,
AP CdS to follow up potential sponsor
AS: Think thats all for nowI didnt go to CTC (clinical teaching committee) because it was when the MDEMO exam was happening hahah but ive gone through the minutes and I think Chlo will bring up anything she feels important - the main discussion seemed to be around the continuous proposal changes to year 5 assessments
TL: the changes to fourth year are going through arent they?
CdS: changes were always going occur, the only issue under review was the implementation,
CdS: 4th years are now guaranteed to have a 2 week teaching free revision period
4. Vice President Andrew Armson
AA: The tutor scheme where 3rd years opt-in tutor 1st and 2nd year resit students has been left to late in my handover. I'm going to move it further forward and organise it for the end of my position (ie March) for next years students, instead.
AA: I've just started to think about organising the electives event. This year it will be moved from November to January and combined the Preparing For Foundation event.
5. Conference Update
Lots of sponsor money from Wesleyan and lots of uni have replised
While looking for accommodation will committee members be willing for people to stay in their student homes?
Yes, most people generally willing depending on views of fellow housemates
CdS: it is on the 7th Nov
Just the committee not all medical students will be attending
We need to decide if we are going to set a limit on the nu
