CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: WINTER ACADEMYJanuary 2016, Tallinn

At HEISE Winter Academy lectures, presentations, case studies, visits to cultural institutions, group works and discussions you will learn about cultural, social and economic impacts of cultural projects and institutions and how to manage them. The Academy is expecting participants of MA level; BA and PhD students are also warmly welcome.

The HEISE Winter Academy aims to introduce the specificities relating to the art’s societal impact and its effect on management in reflective and international group-work environment by providing analytical and pragmatic problematics of the factors and measures relevant for success in managing economic and social impact of arts projects.

As a result you: will be familiarized with the course topic and acquires the knowledge and

understanding on the specificities relating to the art’s societal impact and its effect on management.

will have an overview of the some cultural organizations, who are managing the societal impacts of arts and are able to analyze possible solutions for increasing the societal impact and ways of measuring the societal impact.

have learned a responsible and professional way of working in group. have improved the skills to assess his or her own activities in teamwork. are able to present his/her project in a certain time-frame, having feedback and

comments on it. have built up the management expertise within art projects with societal impact.

Winter Academy involves three kinds of assignments in addition to the active participation in all classes.

1. First, you are expected to read the material assigned for the winter academy and each lecture beforehand in order to fully participate in the class discussions.

2. Second, during the winter academy you will work intensively with a practical case that relates to different aspects of managing art projects with societal impact. The case analyses are done in groups and each group is working with one case. Case analysis includes a final presentation at the end of the winter academy and a written academic report, sent to instructors after the winter academy.

3. Thirdly, the final assignment is an individual learning diary, sent to instructors after the winter academy.

READING MATERIAL

In order to familiarize with the course topic – managing the societal impact of arts – we have assigned a course book that will give you a good introduction to the topic prior to the intensive winter academy in Tallinn. The book is Eleonora Belfiore and Oliver Bennett: The Social Impact of the Arts: An Intellectual History.

We recommend that you read the whole book, but if you have only limited time available please concentrate on the following chapters:

Introduction, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Conclusionsand reading the short summaries at the end of rest of the chapters.

In addition, each lecture of the HEISE Winter Academy involves readings that are expected to be read in prior to the lectures. The lecture take place Jan 9th to Jan 12h, and Jan 13th and 14th we have your own presentations. The readings will be available online before the intensive learning period, on November 15th.

Thursday, 12th of Jan

Lecture on management and leadership in art projects with societal impact. Opening note: PhD student Kaari Kiitsak-Prikk. Lecturer: Professor Annukka Jyrämä, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and Tanja Johansson Sibelius Academy.

CASE ANALYSIS

Each student will be assigned to a group that will work with a practical case during the Winter Academy. The groups will get the written cases that they will read carefully, acquire additional information from the Internet and during the specific case visits, analyze from the point of views presented below, and finally, present their outcome of the analyses both orally and in a written format. Each group has a mentor who will guide, challenge and support the groups during the whole week.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT: LEARNING DIARY

The final course assignment is an individual learning diary, which aims to summarize, analyse and comment on the course as a whole and the individual lectures and learning involved in it. Learning diary is thus an instrument of your learning and personal growth as it helps to become more conscious of your learning. In other words, learning diary is a journal of your own work, thoughts, problems, questions, learning processes, conclusions, and reflections. It is mental processing of things you have learned but also of things you recognize are yet to be learned.

GRADING OF THE WINTER ACADEMY

The course is assessed on a scale of Pass/Fail as following:1. Active participation in lectures and group work in class2. Case analysis (max 5 pages) that consists of:

General description of the case The forms of societal impact involved in the case Main issues in managing the societal impacts of art, possible solutions for solving

these issues Possible solutions for increasing the societal impact of the case Ways of measuring the societal impact of the case in the future

3. Individual learning diary (max 5 pages)

HEISE Winter Academy provides 5ECTS after full completion.

APPLICATION

The participators are selected based on motivation letters evaluated in each partner school. As a student of Aalto, please send the motivation letter to tiina.pusa@aalto.fi by 15th of November.

As alternative to on-site winter academy, the content of subject can be acquired in virtual way. Virtual Academy is based on online platform. The video lectures, e-learning material, virtual group work environment with virtual mentoring is activated in certain time indicated at the beginning of the winter academy. The number of virtual participants is limited.
