or protesting the ultimatum of “Fifty-four forty or fight!” Discuss the background of the controversy and the implications of territorial

acquisitions in your letter. Must be a full page, typed in a 12-point font. Worth 10 points.

4. Write a Diary - Imagine your are a Mormon who made the journey from New York to Utah. Create diary entries describing significant events that happened along the journey. Include information about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and Mormon settlers in Salt Lake City. Must have at least five 1/2-page journal entries. Each entry must also have a well illustrated (Yes, it should be in color) picture. Worth 10 points.

5. Create a Movie Trailer - Using I-Movie (or another video program) create a short (less than 2 minutes) movie trailer about any idea or situation from Chapter 11. Worth 10 points.

6. Create and Illustrate a Political Cartoon - Draw, outline and color an original (not one copied from the internet or your book) cartoon that captures the idea of Manifest Destiny. Worth 5 pts.

7. Foldable Graphic Organization - Complete a foldable (directions on page 467) organizing the information. Worth 5 pts.

8. Flash Cards - Make 16 flash cards and memorize them. There should be 8 cards focused on content vocabulary words and 8 cards about the people from Chapter 11. Be prepared to be quizzed. Word 5 points

9. Volunteer Poster - Create a poster asking for volunteers during the Texas War for Independence. Include a description about the conflict over Texas. Poster should be in ink, colored in, and persuasive enough to make someone want to join up! Worth 10 points

10.Children’s Book - Design and illustrate a children’s book about the Alamo. Must be written in your own words. Illustrations must be in color and ink. Front cover should be inviting and back cover should have a synopsis without giving away the ending. Worth 15 points

Pamphlet - Create a helpful pamphlet for people arriving in California. This will be their guide to the California boomtowns. Be creative, make sure to include a description of who the Forty-Niners are and what their lifestyles were like during the Gold Rush. Also include information about land rights, life and society in the boomtowns, and the economic and political progress caused by the Gold Rush.

Map and Paragraph - Draw (in ink) and illustrate ( with color) a map showing the area of the western United States and Mexico. Label the major battles in the Mexican War and include facts that show the importance of each battle. Important - Also include a paragraph explaining whether the U.S. was justified in declaring war against Mexico.

Letter Home - You have just recently immigrated to California from China. Review the experiences of the Chinese immigrants described on page 515 in your text. Use the information to write a letter home to encourage or discourage your family to take the journey to California. Your letter should be at least a page long and include information about what life is like in a mining town.

Character Dialogue - Write a dialogue of three characters - a U.S. citizen who has moved to the Southwest, a Native American, and a Mexican. Focus on their lives in the new U.S. territories. Have each character describe changes brought about by the Mexican War and ways they adapted to the changes.

Tri-Fold Brochure - Create a colorful and informative tri-fold brochure about the Oregon Trail. Include accurate descriptions of the journey, problems that travels might face along the way, and supplies that one would need to make the journey. Use your textbook, the internet, and other resources to gather needed information for your brochure.
