Then Sings My SoulSummer Sermon Series
This morning we consider the “theme hymn” for this entire sermon series. Carl Boberg, a 26-year-old Swedish clergyman, wrote a poem in 1885 entitled, “O Mighty God.” His words were later reworked by the English missionary Stuart Hine into the refrain that we know today – “Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art!”
Hymn 101 From all that dwell below the skies (standing) Duke Street
Opening Prayer (in unison, standing)O God, our Guide and Guardian, you have led us apart from the busy world into the quiet of your house.Grant us grace to worship you in Spirit and in truth,to the comfort of our soulsand the upbuilding of every good purpose and holy desire.Enable us to do more perfectly the work to which you have called us,that we may not fear the coming of night, when we shall resign into your hands the tasks which you have committed to us.So may we worship you not only with our lips at this hour, but in word and deed all the days of our lives;through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Today’s Scriptures1 Chronicles 29:10-1410Then David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly; David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our ancestor Israel, forever and ever. 11Yours, O Lord, are
the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12Riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might; and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. 13And now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your glorious name. 14“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to make this freewill offering? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.
Mark 10:35-4535James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” 37And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

WESTERN PA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH DISASTER RESPONSE MINISTRIES
(ALERT- BULLETIN)
Dear Friends and Co-Laborers with the Lord,
This is an URGENT reminder of the need for Early Response Teams and volunteers to help with clean up in the aftermath of Flash Flooding which has taken place over the course of the last 30 days. We still have home owners to be helped with clean up in Fayette, Washington, and Allegheny Counties which encompass three of our districts.
In Fayette County (Connellsville District) specifically in the Uniontown, Fairchance, and Smithfield areas there are a minimum of six homes requiring minor to major cleaning of mud and debris along with the removal of drywall and insulation. The effort is led by Rev. Mark Blair of Masontown/Smithfield UMC who also serves as Connellsville District Disaster Response Coordinator.
In Washington County (Washington City, Finleyville, and surrounding townships) Washington District Coordinator Christy Orndorff continues to do assessments with Pat Roddy (Crossroads) and Pastor Kelley Schanley (Washington 1st). A contact point at Washington First UM has been established. There are immediate needs for experienced ERT and also for volunteers to aid in this response.
The Pittsburgh District response under the direction of Fred Watts continues to address issues and appeal for teams to aid home owners.
You may contact the District Response Coordinators directly or please go towww.wpaumc.org/summer2017floodvolunteers to register and share your availability and someone will be in touch with you with an assignment. You may continue to support these efforts through your assembly and collection of UMCOR kits directed to the East Brook Mission Barn or monetary donations may be directed to the Conference Treasurer and marked Disaster Response to be utilized where they are most needed. In addition to your volunteering and giving - please remember to pray for those through out the world affected by disaster and for the emergency and early response workers who a large number are volunteers and have been working tirelessly to help others in their time of need. As always if I can be of any assistance - please do not hesitate to call. Serving in the name of Jesus,
