Name __________________ Outsiders Slang The Outsiders is filled with slang words that we may or may not know today. After all, this was taking place in the 1960’s, and people don’t talk the way we do now. In order to grasp this new language, study the new slang words below. You will need to make flashcards for all 25 words, or you can write all 25 words in sentences of your own on a sheet of paper. There will be a quiz on Friday over the slang an SE Hinton. 1. Fake-out = pretend I groaned and it wasn’t all fake out. 2. Bum = terrible That bum haircut made my ears stick out. 3. Pack a punch = hit Ol’ Tim sure can pack a punch. 4. Weed = cigarette Wish I had me a weed. 5. Blowin’ his loot = spending all his money He’s blowin’ his loot from the last race. 6. Have it made = have it easy I’ll bet you think the Socs have it made. 7. Stick up for = support When you’re a gang, you stick up for the members. 8. Itching = eager Neither one of my brothers had ever been beaten in a fight, but I wasn’t exactly itching for someone to break the record. 9. Hold up! = Wait! “Hold up!” a familiar voice yelled. 10. Take on = Challenge I’ll take on anyone. 11. Made good = succeed There was a column about just Darry and Soda and me: how Darry worked on two jobs at once and made good at both of them and about his outstanding record at school. 12. 22. Jumped = attacked Two-Bit got jumped a few days ago.

23. Bopper = fighter He a pretty good bopper?

24. Shut your trap = shut your mouth An’ you can shut your trap, Johnny Cade, cause we all know you ain’t wanted at home,

either.25. Bugging = bothering

And Darry, you ought to try to understand him more, and quit bugging him about every little mistake he makes.
