July 2016
Dear Friends,
With summer (finally) upon us, I am hoping that you will each have time to relax and enjoy the warm sunny months in ways that bring you pleasure. Like so many, for me, summer must include beach time. Time spent on long morning walks with a dog or two of mine is also a great way to start a summer day. And gardening, summer must include some work in the dirt! How about you?
Wherever you go this summer, whatever you do, don’tforget to bring your “Flat Jesus” along and get a picture. We’re going to start posting them for everyone to see!
The entire idea of the “Flat Jesus” project is simple: wherever we are over the summer months, we are reminded that Jesus travels with us. Sharing the pictures of “Flat Jesus” reminds us of the family that we have at Asbury UMC.
I will be taking the month of July away from Asbury for a time of renewal and rest and vacation. During that time, I plan to spend some time on a silent retreat and I also plan to catch up on some reading, visiting with friends and of course, long walks with the dogs. During my time away, we will have our gifted and talented Lay Speakers leading worship on Sundays. There will be pastoral coverage for emergencies should they arise and I am out of town.
I pray that you have time for rest, renewal and vacation as well this summer. As God blesses our time together in our work in ministry, may God bless our time of rest and renewal.

And congratulations to our college grads: Kristopher Fuller, Aubrey Soucy, Carissa Guglietta and Franklin Kirschner.
The Scholarship Committee of the Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the scholars who were awarded a Scholarship Award in June as follows:
Stephanie Achilli, Emma Avery, Carli Beveridge, Melissa Buonafede, Nathan Butler, Leonard Cannon, Jon Denski, Rachel Floyd, Michaela Gonzalez.
A reminder to all our college bound graduates to make sure you let the church office know your address so we can keep you up to date with what’s happening here at Asbury! You can email the church office with your information at [email protected].
A big thank you to the Senior Fellowship of Asbury for their purchase of the new chair rack for the folding chairs in Wesley Hall.--------------------------------------------------Thank you to everyone that participated in our clothing drive fundraiser. Over 300 bags were collected. We received a total of $804.40 for the current expense fund.--------------------------------------------------I would like to say thank you to the Board of Trustees for giving me an AUMC scholarship. Even though I will be staying at UCONN in Storrs, I will be sure to always come back and visit my AUMC family.
With many thanks,Carli Beveridge
--------------------------------------------------We would like to thank the members of Asbury for their generosity in presenting us a gift for our European trip this summer. We’ve been scouts for the past 12 years, and most of that time was at Asbury. We started as Daisies, and have finished our last year as Ambassadors, graduated high school, and are now off to college or the military. We will always remember your kindness and thoughtfulness in providing us a safe location for us to become the young ladies we are today.
With much respect,Carli Beveridge, Julia Gordon,Lizzy Hrwyniak & Katie Steele

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL
All are welcome
Beginning in September, Rhythms of Grace will meet the second Sunday of every month
using the Sanctuary and Wesley Hall.
DON’T FORGET FLAT JESUS!
Asbury’s Summer One Room Sunday School
will begin July 10th at 9:00 a.m. The last class will be Aug. 21st
At 9:00 a.m.
There will be NO Sunday Schoolon the following dates:
July 3rdAugust 28th
September 4th
Starting in September The Sunday School Newsletter will be sent home to the children of Asbury and their families. Please take a moment to read and review with your children. There will be information concerning Sunday School, our children, and upcoming events. We will have a section for the "disciple of the month", which will feature children who have been nominated by the membership of the church.
All stories, ideas, comments, etc. can be placed in the Children's mailbox which is located in Wesley Hall. If you have any questions, please contact Geri Beveridge. Watch your mail for our summer version.
1) Decorate Flat Jesus however you want.
2) Take your Flat Jesus with you on summer adventures! Leave him in your car, take him to the park, pack him in your suitcase. Wherever your travels take you be it near or far. (and it does not have to be ONLY children!)
3) Take a picture with your Flat Jesus! Email the picture to [email protected], or bring in a copy and we’ll post it on our web page and the bulletin board.

Please remember
to rinse out any containers before putting them in the recycling bin.
We have already had one bad bout with ants in the building,
and need your help to avoid another one.
Summer is upon us and it’s time to slow down, relax, go on vacation and spend time outdoors after a long, cold winter. However, Asbury is still open and active during the summer months.
In order to continue summer programming we need you to keep your pledge current during this time, so please remember your commitment to your church family.
Cecil and I joined Asbury in 1954 and had all three of our children baptized here and had their weddings here as they grew up. We taught Sunday School at Asbury which helped deepen our own faith.
I have held every office in the church with the exception of Trustees. I was on the Altar Guild for many years, and have delivered many plants and meals to shut-ins. I worked on many church dinners and fundraisers, which helped me build close friendships within the church.
My faith has been been developed and strengthened by six different pastors. What does Asbury mean to me? It’s my second home, and my very special family!

It has been 5 years since the release of Asbury's pictorial. We would like to release a new directory in September, but we need your help!
We ask that you send in a family picture to the office over the summer months. There are many ways to get a picture to the office: email, CD, or flash drive. There will be a few dates before September where you will be able to come to church and have your picture taken. These dates have yet to be determined, so keep an eye on the bulletin and Friday email blast for updates.
Also, if you have any updated information on home address, phone, cell phones, email addresses, children moving, marriages, etc, please be sure to contact the church office. It's very important to keep the roll books up to date.

[God] seems to do nothing of himself which he can possibly delegate to his creatures. He commands us to do slowly and blunderingly what he could do perfectly and in the twinkling of an eye. … Creation seems to be delegation through and through. I suppose this is because [God] is a giver.
