Food Pantry – Sheryl Marvin & Terry Ranieri Welcome back! Once again, we will be in front of the clubhouse before each GHWC meeting to collect non-perishable food items to help feed the hungry in Flagler County. Your past generosity has been overwhelming, and we hope that each of you will continue to donate food items or make a monetary donation to the food bank each month.

Last April, when Trish Giaccone, the Executive Director of the Family Life Center, spoke at our meeting of the times when there is little or no food to feed the mothers and children at the shelter, it made us stop and think about how we could help. As our club's membership has grown, so has the amount of food items collected each month. We feel that we are able to donate food items, not only to the Resource Center in Bunnell, but also to the Family Life Center. The need to help the hungry in Flagler County continues and we thank all of you in advance for your donations as we reach out to offer support to those who need our helping hand.

Ways and Means – Lucy Crowley

Another summer has come to an end and we are now getting ready for a new club year. I hope you have all had a great summer and are now ready to think about our fund raising events for this year.

As we did last year, we are asking all of our members to support our events by not only attending them and buying raffle tickets but also by helping with the making of the baskets especially for the Day of Games, which again will be in January. So many ladies told me last year that it was so much fun getting together with friends and making a basket for this special event.

For the other months, we ask if you have something to contribute, please call Sherry Sabol at 986-3360 and let her know you have something for a basket. We are working on another evening at Chez Jacqueline in the fall, a style show in spring and an Evening at the Theater in February. The dates will be announced in future newsletters and at the meetings.

Please remember that without your help raising money, we would not be able to contribute to the many charities that we give to. Thank you for your past support and please remember to bring your money to buy raffle tickets at the meetings!!!Lucy

President’s Project: Sally Nord

Our new State President, Carole Weaver, has chosen Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) with special emphasis on the Wounded Veterans Initiative as her President’s Project. Founded in 1975, Canine Companions is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. We are fortunate that we will have the opportunity to learn more about this worthwhile organization in November, as our guest speaker will be from Canine Companions.

At this time, I would also like to mention that although Education is no longer the President’s Project, GHWC will continue to document the number of hours which our members volunteer in the Flagler School System and at the Library. This will now fall under the Community Service Program of Education. So, those of you who volunteer, please continue to keep track of your hours so we can collect that information in December. If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact Suzy Gamblain, Executive Director of Flagler Volunteer Services for more information. (386-597-2950).

Home Life – Karen Finder

SCHOOL BEGINS ---------- STRESS INTENSIFIES

As a former educator I still get the jitters prior to the first day of school. Even though I am retired, the anxiety I felt during those years of prepping for a new school year has remained vividly embedded in my DNA. I have found as my friends’ children and my own grandchildren begin school, I find as in years passed this time of year has the ability to bring back those “old familiar stressful feelings.”

As a grandparent and parent of grown children I often find myself skyping to offer support during this particularly difficult period or viewing a recent u-tube video creation, or Facebook post that my grandkids have produced to give some helpful feed-back. I find myself listening intently to my child’s retelling of a painful circumstance that has resulted from a new college roommate challenge, a bullying incident at the school bus stop, a “friends” breakup issue, or simply dealing with the day-to-day stress of living in today’s complicated and complex world.

To reduce my own feelings of helplessness, I find myself calling and listening first and then texting my adult children suggesting some helpful strategies on how to cope with these difficult situations that seem to have no simple answers but have surfaced despite our best efforts. I have come to the conclusion that in today’s world people cannot escape feeling anxious or stressed-out with whatever is happening to friends, families, especially our children or grandchildren. These are feelings we all need to accept as part of life and somehow learn to live with, as a way of life.Dr. Greenway’s article “Don’t Sweat the Stress” in the recent PVL publication offers a helpful prescription to calm the level of anxiety and stress felt by most family members as children return to school. Listed below are some simple suggestions* GET ORGANIZED: Routine and structure are key. Every family needs a large calendar hanging in a location where everyone can see it. This is where you and your family can write down events coming up, school closings, medical/social appointments, due dates for school projects. Use a different color for each event. Set a time each evening for the family to get together around the calendar and review the upcoming day’s events so there are no surprises.

STRESS REDUCTION EXERCISES: Research has shown that since stress or anxiety produces changes in our bodies such as a quickening of breathing and tenseness in our muscles, an exercise that reduces these bodily reactions is recommended. An exercise called Progressive Muscle Relaxation can be used as a stress reducer. Sit in a comfortable chair, with feet flat on the floor or lie down. Focus on one muscle group at a time, tensing each group for 10 seconds and then relaxing them. Start at your feet and move upward. Focus on the difference in sensation between the tense muscles and the relaxed muscles. Keep the attention on the muscles and when you notice your mind wandering, which it will, gently bring your focus back to the muscles and continue. By the time you get to your forehead, you will notice a deep sense of relaxation.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP: Our bodies and brains need sleep to grow and rejuvenate and studies show that lack of sleep leads to irritability and increased stress. Having a consistent bedtime and sticking to it is

key. If you have trouble falling asleep, it may be due to stress and doing some stress reduction exercise can bring sleep on. 1

*These suggestions can be useful to anyone who is experiencing stress/anxiety for any particular reason.1PVL Coastal, “Don’t Sweat the Stress” by Dr. Greenway, Volume 3, Issue 4, 2014, pages 11-14.

If you are a Season Ticket Holder to the Flagler Playhouse, you might want to, then, donate $5 or so to the International Project as this is the only fundraiser for this project. We can, hopefully, buy another cow! like last year - plus other animals for the Heifer Project.

Heifer International provides cows, goats, chickens, bees, etc. to women in developing countries to help them feed their families and learn to make a living supporting themselves.Peggy Smith

History of the General Federation of Women’s Club – Sandy HollenbeckLast year I included in our newsletter the entire history of our Florida history for GFWC. I hope you all found it interesting and educational. This year as promised, I am including the national history of GFWC. When I first heard a seminar on the national history of GFWC, I was amazed at the accomplishments this organization has achieved in its 146 years of existence.

OUR STORY – Part 11868: GFWC's roots can be traced back to 1868 when Jane Cunningham Croly (1829-1901), a professional New York journalist who wrote under the pen name of Jennie June, attempted to attend a dinner at an all-male press club honoring British novelist Charles Dickens. Croly was denied admittance based upon her gender, and, in response, she formed a club for women. She chose the name Sorosis, a Greek word meaning "an aggregation; a sweet flavor of many fruits."

1890: Jane Croly, founder of Sorosis, extended an invitation to women's clubs throughout the United States to attend a ratification convention in New York City. Sixty-three clubs attended on April 23-25 and took action to form the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

1898: GFWC unanimously passed a resolution against child labor. With the help of clubwoman Jane Addams (1860-1935), child labor became a major area of concern for the Federation. In 1901, Addams headed the Federation's Child Labor Committee to work for the maintenance and improvement of child labor laws.Sandy Hollenbeck
