We will introduce our theme and ask our big questions about The Borrowers/Arrietty, stories about small people living amongst us and link this to our overall friends and family theme.Knowledge Harvest – what do we know already?Big questions for our display – what do we want to find out?Who are the Borrowers? What do they do? Why do they come into the house? What do they take and why?Create a pocket pal character. Design a pocket and describe your pocket pal.

Friday 16th SeptemberLearning Experiences: Pocket Pal AdventuresEvery Friday we will write an installment of our pocket pal adventure story. This week will create our own pocket pal. We will describe our pocket pal and write an introduction to them and describe their dreams.

WEEK 3 THEME: Making A Home Under The HouseMonday 19th – Wednesday 21st SeptemberLearning Experiences:Following our trip to Sutton House, we will focus on items that the Borrowers borrow from the ‘human beans’ to make a house. We will have a selection of things that a Borrower might find in the house and think about what we would use it for and what a Borrower would use it for.We will describe/compare our homes and the home of the Borrowers under the clock in the old house. We will write Arietty’s guide to her home

GPS Focus: Noun phrases and expanded noun phrases for description and to specify. Adjectives to describe.KS1 Reading Tree Groups

WEEK 4 THEME: Going OutsideMonday 26th – Wednesday 28th SeptemberLearning Experiences:Arrietty is desperate to join her father on a borrowing trip and she is even more desperate to go outside and see the real world. She wants to be running in the grass and to see the blue sky and sunshine for herself.Students will write about Arrietty’s first trip outside using vivid descriptions. We will also discover how suffixes can help make our writing more exciting. As well as writing beautiful descriptions, we will write some going outside poems.GPS Focus: similes and suffixes

KS1 Reading Tree & STEM GroupsSTEM learning:Arrietty needs a bag to take borrowing or she might drop things along the way, especially when she is climbing the curtains or running through the long grass. Because she is new to borrowing, Arrietty quite often drops and loses things she finds. So this week we will look at the wonderful world of

Students will investigate the science concept of living things and their habitats. We will go out with a borrowing bag and see what we can find in different habitats around the school. We will look at what living things we can find there and why they are suited to that particular habitat. We will compare this to the Borrowers and why they live in their particular habitat.

Following our work on going outside, we will work on creating some beautiful pictures inspired by Arrietty’s garden.

Friday 30th SeptemberLearning Experiences:Chapter 3 of pocket pal adventure story. This week we will describe the journey our pocket pal takes as they venture outside for the first time and feel the warmth of the sun on them and the grass beneath their feet.

WEEK 5 THEME: Japanese BorrowersMonday 3rd - Wednesday 5th OctoberLearning Experiences:This week we will focus on Japan – where Arrietty the film stems from. Students will learn about the country, the landscape, the culture and we will even try to learn some of the language. We will visit the local Japanese bakery on Askew Road and hopefully visit the Kyoto Garden in Holland Park. Students will write about our experiences using time words to help sequence and structure their work. This week we will make lots of Japanese food and crafts including origami. These activities will also include lots of writing using instructional language.

WEEK 6 THEME: Trapped In A Jam Jar DC1 WeekMonday 10th – Wednesday 12th OctoberLearning Experiences:DC1 weekIn between our data capture assessments; we will wonder what it would be like to be trapped in a jam jar. Arrietty’s family is always worried about being seen and captured by the ‘human beans’ as they know lots of stories about other borrowers that this has happened to. Students will put a cut out of themselves into a jam jar and write a wonderful account of how they came to be trapped in the first place and how they came about their great escape. Students will need to insert their photo and decorate their jam jar before they embark on their writing.GPS focus – verbs, adverbs

KS1 Reading Tree & STEM Groups

STEM learning:This week, students will make a special drink for Arrietty and a human bean to take on a picnic. They will learn about capacity – how to read scales and measure amounts of liquids.Carousel of maths activities to consolidate, challenge and extend:Using droppers and pipetsChoose appropriate units of measureCarefully pour and measure amounts of liquidCompare amounts of liquidsAdd and subtract different amountsSolve capacity problems

We will also link this theme of being trapped to look at trapped wildlife and endangered species. Students will find out what wildlife is endangered and how changes to their habitats have contributed to this situation. Students will create an endangered species information pack.

WEEK 7 THEME: Friends and EnemiesMonday 17th - Wednesday 19th OctoberLearning Experiences:The book and the film both feature a mean housekeeper character. She is always trying to capture the ‘little people’ that she is convinced live within her house. This makes her the enemy of the borrower family. Arrietty’s family know that borrowers should never be seen by the humans and there is certainly no way that they should ever be friends. However, Arrietty makes friends with the boy and they help each other. Arrietty writes notes and reads to him, he finds and delivers useful items to her family. This week we will look at these different relationships and write contrasting poetry with repeating chorus patterns.

GPS focus – repeating patterns in poetry

KS1 Reading Tree & STEM Groups

STEM learning:We will focus on numbers and number patterns this week.Carousel of maths activities to consolidate, challenge and extend:Number sequencesOdd and even numbersPicture patternsTimes table patterns

Arrietty’s family are worried that they might be some of the few remaining borrowers left. How would you feel if you were the only ones left of your kind? We will link this learning to our science theme of living things and endangered species. Students will create a thoughts and feelings map and design and make a range of friendship bracelets to share with our friends.

We will finish with a reflection task to look back and celebrate all of our learning this term.
