Directions:

1. Divide into groups of four people. Each member of the group must have a different numbered song sheet, 1-4.

2. As a group you will read the lyrics to the songs and highlight lines of the songs that represent ideas about the Enlightenment.

3. As a group you will then decide which philosopher from the list is most like each song. There can be more than one philosopher for each song. Mark each song with the colored crayons to represent the philosopher.

4. As a group, list a current or popular song for each philosopher that better reflects their ideas. Write one paragraph and explain why and how the lyrics of the new song fit better with the philosopher’s ideals.

Philosophers & Their Ideas:

Blue- Thomas Hobbes and the nature of society (all men are brutish). Idea that men must forfeit some personal freedoms for the benefit of having a strong ruler who maintains a peaceful and orderly society.

Green- John Locke – Blank slate theory, natural rights and the idea that man has the right to overthrow a ruler who does not protect those rights.

Yellow- Voltaire – tolerance; freedom of speech and religion.

Red- Montesquieu – separation of government, checks and balances.

Orange- Rousseau – Noble Savage, ideas on education, social contract, the General Will.

Purple- Adam Smith – capitalism, the invisible hand

Black- Mary Wollstonecraft – women’s rights

Brown- Cesare Becarria – opposed the use of torture

ZZ Top - Bad to the Bone

On the day I was born, the nurses all gathered 'roundAnd they gazed in wide wonder, at the joy they had foundThe head nurse spoke up, and she said leave this one aloneShe could tell right away, that I was bad to the boneBad to the boneBad to the boneB-B-B-B-Bad to the bone

I broke a thousand hearts, before I met youI'll break a thousand more baby, before I am throughI wanna be yours pretty baby, yours and yours aloneI'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm bad to the boneBad to the boneI make a rich woman beg, I'll make a good woman stealI'll make an old woman blush, and make a young woman squealI wanna be yours pretty baby, yours and yours aloneI'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm bad to the bone

Helen Reddy - I Am Woman (Hear Me Roar)

I am woman, hear me roarIn numbers too big to ignoreAnd I know too much to go back an' pretend'Cause I've heard it all beforeAnd I've been down there on the floorNo one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wiseBut it's wisdom born of painYes, I've paid the priceBut look how much I gainedIf I have to, I can do anythingI am strong(Strong)I am invincible(Invincible)I am woman

You can bend but never break me'Cause it only serves to make meMore determined to achieve my final goalAnd I come back even strongerNot a novice any longer'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh yes, I am wiseBut it's wisdom born of painYes, I've paid the priceBut look how much I gainedIf I have to, I can do anythingI am strong(Strong)I am invincible(Invincible)I am woman

I am woman watch me growSee me standing toe to toeAs I spread my lovin' arms across the landBut I'm still an embryoWith a long, long way to goUntil I make my brother understand

Oh yes, I am wiseBut it's wisdom born of painYes, I've paid the priceBut look how much I gainedIf I have to, I can face anythingI am strong (Strong)I am invincible (Invincible)I am woman

Beatles - Mother Nature’s Son

Born a poor young country boy, Mother Nature's sonAll day long I'm sitting singing songs for everyoneSit beside a mountain stream, see her waters riseListen to the pretty sound of music as she fliesDoo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo dooFind me in my field of grass, Mother Nature's sonSwaying daises sing a lazy song beneath the sun

Three Dog Night - Easy to Be Hard

How can people be so heartless,How can people be so cruel?Easy to be hard...Easy to be cold.

How can people have no feelings,How can they ignore their friends?Easy to be proud,Easy to say no.

Especially people who care about strangers

Who care about evil and social injustice...Do you only care about the bleeding crowd? How about a needy friend? I need a friend.

How can people be so heartless? You know I'm hung up on you.....Easy to be proud,Easy to say no.

Especially people who care about strangersWho care about evil and social injustice...Do you only care about the bleeding crowd? How about a needy friend? We all need a friend.

How can people be so heartless? How can people be so cruel?Easy to be proud,Easy to say no,Easy to be cold,Easy to say no,Come on easy to be mean,Easy to say no,Easy to be cold,Easy to say no,Much too easy to say no.

Artist/Song/Lyrics #4Rolling Stones - You Can’t Always Get What You Want

I saw her today at the receptionA glass of wine in her handI knew she would meet her connectionAt her feet was her footloose man

No, you can't always get what you wantYou can't always get what you wantYou can't always get what you wantBut if you try sometime you findYou get what you need

But I went down to the demonstrationTo get your fair share of abuseSinging, "We're gonna vent our frustrationIf we don't we're gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse"

I went down to the Chelsea drugstoreTo get your prescription filledI was standing in line with Mr. JimmyAnd man, did he look pretty illWe decided that we would have a sodaMy favorite flavor, cherry redI sung my song to Mr. JimmyYeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead" I said to him

You can't always get what you wantYou can't always get what you wantYou can't always get what you wantBut if you try sometimes you just might findYou get what you need

I saw her today at the receptionIn her glass was a bleeding manShe was practiced at the art of deceptionWell I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you wantYou can't always get what you wantYou can't always get what you wantBut if you try sometimes you just might findYou just might findYou get what you need

Pink Floyd - We Don’t Need No Education

We don't need no educationWe don't need no thought control

No dark sarcasm in the classroomTeachers leave them kids aloneHey teacher leave them kids aloneAll in all it's just another brick in the wallAll in all you're just another brick in the wallWe don't need no educationWe don't need no thought controlNo dark sarcasm in the classroomTeachers leave them kids aloneHey teacher leave us kids aloneAll in all you're just another brick in the wallAll in all you're just another brick in the wall

Aretha Franklin –Think (Freedom)

You better think! (Think)Think about what you're tryin' to do to meYeah, think (Think think)Let your mind go let yourself be free

Let's go back, let's go backLet's go way on way back whenI didn't even know youYou couldn't a been too much more than ten(Just a child)

I ain't no psychiatristI ain't no doctor with degreesBut it don't take too much high I.Q.To see what you're doin' to me

Oh, freedom (Freedom)Freedom (Freedom)Oh, freedomYeah, freedom (Yeah)

Hey, think about itYou think about itThere ain't nothin' you could askI could answer you with I won't (I won't)But I was gonna change my mind ifYou keep doin' things I don't (don’t)

People walkin' around everydayPlayin' games and takin' scoresTryin' to make other people lose their mindsWell be careful you don't lose yours

You need me, and I need you(Need me)(Don't know)Without each otherAin't nothin' neither can doOoh yeah, think about it baby
