HOLY MASS

CHRIST THE KINGWhen celebrating the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, it should not be our version of a playground brag – “Oh yeah? Well, my Jesus is King of the Universe!” Today’s Gospel reminds us that there is no such structure in this world for anyone to reign over. Much of sacred scripture was written during persecution, so we could expect occasional claims that Jesus ruled over the persecutors. But political power is also not the point. Somehow in the depths of the universe there is a divine structure. Jesus is king because the universe is in harmony with his life, teaching and sacrifice. In St. Peter’s Square, the central obelisk, which is topped by a cross, is surrounded by eight stones, each depicting a wind from a different direction. Beyond that, moving out from the cross of Christ, is a line along which are depicted constellations, the signs of the Zodiac. This functions as a solar calendar but, more importantly, it reminds us that the cross is the centre of the world and all that is. This is the everlasting dominion of which Daniel speaks. Today, therefore, we give thanks that Jesus has been revealed to us, that we need not fight a futile battle against the universe. Jesus is King. Let us rejoice. Glenn Byer, Toronto, ON.

FEAST OF THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING.THY KINGDOM COME!

Pope Pius XI in his encyclical, QUAS PRIMAS of December 11, 1925 established the Feast of Christ the King to be celebrated annually on the last Sunday of  the liturgical year.

He could have been envisioning our own year of 2015, as he wrote:   " . . . that these manifold evils in the world were due to the fact that the majority of men had thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law out of their lives; . . . as long as individuals and states refused to submit to the rule of our Savior, there would be no really hopeful prospect of a lasting peace among nations. Men must look for the peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ...

If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven and on earth; if all men, purchased by his precious blood, are by a new right subjected to his dominion; if this power embraces all men, it must be clear that not one of our faculties is exempt from his empire.

He must reign in our minds, which should assent with perfect submission and firm belief to revealed truths and to the doctrines of Christ.

He must reign in our wills, which should obey the laws and precepts of God.

He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn natural desires and love God above all things, and cleave to him alone.

He must reign in our bodies and in our members, which should serve as instruments for the interior sanctification of our souls."

The Pope also stated:  "We further ordain that the dedication of mankind to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which Our predecessor of saintly memory, Pope Pius X, commanded to be renewed yearly be made annually on the Feast of Christ the King."

Let us pray together as a parish family:

An  Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Most Sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before Thine altar. We are Thine, and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united to Thee, behold each of us freely consecrates ourselves today to Thy Most Sacred Heart.

Many indeed have never known Thee.  Many too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart. Be Thou King, O Lord, not only of the faithful children, who have never forsaken Thee, but also of the prodigal children, who have abandoned Thee. Grant that they may quickly return to their Father’s house lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.    Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and unity of faith, so that there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.     Be Thou King of all those who are still involved in the darkness of idolatry or of Islamism, and refuse not to draw them into the light and kingdom of God. Turn Thine eyes of mercy towards the children of that race, once Thy chosen people. Of old they called down upon themselves the Blood of the Savior; may it now descend upon them a laver of redemption and of life.        Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm.  Give peace and order to all nations. Make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry, "Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honor forever.

R. Amen.
