Application for Professional Psychology Master’s Degree Programme, 2021

Thank you for your enquiry about the Clinical/Counselling/Educational/Industrial/Research Psychology Master’s Degree Programme run by the Discipline of Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). The Clinical and Counselling Psychology master’s degree programmes are offered on both the Howard College and Pietermaritzburg Campuses. The Educational and Research Psychology master’s degree programmes are only offered on the Pietermaritzburg Campus, and the Industrial Psychology master’s degree programme is only offered on the Howard College Campus.

Restriction on applicationsWith the exception of the Industrial and Research Psychology programmes, students may only apply to ONE of the Clinical, Counselling, or Educational Psychology programmes on ONE site (i.e., Pietermaritzburg OR Howard College) in an application cycle. Applications made for more than one of either Clinical, Counselling, or Educational Psychology, and/or on more than one site will result in all applications submitted by that candidate being disqualified. If you are applying for more than one programme (where this is permissible: e.g., Clinical Psychology and Industrial Psychology) you must complete separate applications for each programme.

Application feesYour application must be accompanied by an application fee of R200.00 for South Africans, R470.00 if you are from a SADC country, or US$146 if you are from a Non-SADC country. This fee is non-refundable, and deposits are to be made out to “University of KwaZulu-Natal.” Please note that payment of the deposit does not signify acceptance onto the programme – it merely allows the Research and Higher Degrees Officer to capture your information and to begin processing further internal documentation. If you are applying for more than one programme (where permissible) you only need to make one application payment, however, you should include the proof of payment with both applications you submit.

Submitting applications and deadline for applicationsApplicants need to complete three forms; this application form, a “UKZN Psychology Application for Postgraduate Admission” form (available on the UKZN psychology website), and an online form (see links below). Incomplete applications will not be considered.

For this application form, you should ensure that each section is completed, saved as a single pdf document, and then emailed to the relevant administrator on the campus you are applying at (i.e., Ms Ayanda Ntuli [ntulia@ukzn.ac.za] on the Howard College Campus OR Ms Priya Konan [konan@ukzn.ac.za] on the Pietermaritzburg Campus). The completed “UKZN Psychology Application for Postgraduate Admission” form (only available in pdf format) and available on the UKZN psychology website should also be emailed to either Ms Ntuli or Ms Konan.

The closing date for applications is 25th September 2020 and only emailed applications (for this form and the “UKZN Psychology Application for Postgraduate Admission” can be accepted for 2021 applications. Where relevant, you should insert copies of certified documents directly into this application form. You can do this via taking a screen grab of an electronic copy of a certified application (or via using the Microsoft Office snipping tool function), and then pasting/inserting this image directly into this application. Should your application be successful, you will be required to provide either Ms Ntuli or Ms Konan with the original certified copies of relevant documents before you will be permitted to register in 2021. Emails should reach Ms Ntuli or Ms Konan before 12h00 on the 25th September 2020. No late submissions will be accepted, and it is your responsibility to obtain and retain proof that your application has been received timeously.

RefereesIn the online application form (and in this application form), you are asked to nominate three referees (at least one academic) and to provide their contact details. Ms Ntuli (Howard College Campus applicants) or Ms Konan (Pietermaritzburg Campus applicants) will independently email your referees between 28th September and 2nd October and invite them to complete an online referee report for you. It is your responsibility to invite referees to serve as referees for your application for professional training at UKZN in 2021, and to notify these referees that they will be sent email invitations to complete an online report for you between 28 th September and 2nd October.

The Master’s Programme selections processFollowing receipt of applications, a review is done of all applications. This review considers a range of factors for suitability for the Master’s Programme, including academic results, relevant experience, language competence, referees' reports, research interests and knowledge of the profession. Following the review, you will either be invited to a selections process or informed that your application was unsuccessful. Should you be invited to the selections process, selections will take place on a set date (either at the campus you have chosen or via an online meeting platform).

If selected, applicants must have completed an honours degree in psychology by the time of admission to the master’s degree. Students should also not be registered for any other degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal or any other higher education institution at the time of admission to the master’s degree.

Selected applicants are advised that it is their own responsibility to obtain details on fee structure and accommodation, as these are not managed by the School.
