BREATHING SPACES BURSARIESDo you have an idea for a small project which responds to air pollution and helps promote healthier streets in St Denys?

Would you like some funding to try this out?

Breathing Spaces is a year-long pilot of conversation and action in St Denys, Southampton, tackling poor air quality, promoting liveable streets and improving health and wellbeing. We have several pots of up to £400 to hand out to Southampton residents or groups that have got an idea that they would like to test out. Our funding comes courtesy of Nesta’s Connected Communities Innovation Fund.

We are keen to hear from a range of people and groups about a variety of ideas – creatives, scientists, community activists, people dedicated to improving healthy living and healthy streets.

If you’d like to talk through your idea for a project, or if you’re unsure how to complete the application, please do get in touch. Email: [email protected] or call Rebecca on 07968 777261

Please submit your ideas to us by 5pm, Thursday 13th June using one of the formats indicated overleaf. We would like everyone to have a chance to read & comment on the proposed projects, so we will be sharing these online and during our Clean Air Ideas - Drop In on Tuesday 18th June. This will be held at St Denys Church Hall, 5-9pm.

The bursary application process and criteriaPlease see below for a template application and guidance on completing it. Please submit your completed proposal, by 5pm on Thurs 13th June, either:

- by email to [email protected]; or- by hand to October Books during opening hours. If you can’t get there please call 07968 777261 and arrangements can be

made.We will share the proposals via Facebook & Twitter so that residents can comment and hopefully pledge support!

We will also make a display of the ideas on Tues 18 June at our Clean Air Ideas Drop In. We’d like people to pop by, have a coffee & a chat, and take a look at the different ideas for change in the neighbourhood. You are welcome to come along and tell people about your proposal. There will be no formal presentations, just informal chatting. We will gather feedback on all the ideas, so if you can’t make it, we don’t expect you to be disadvantaged in the decision-making process.

We hope to fund 6-10 different proposals. Projects should:- make a significant contribution to cleaner air or liveable neighbourhoods in St Denys;

- benefit the residents of St Denys;

- receive a positive response from members of the community in St Denys either through online feedback or at the Clean Air Ideas Drop In;

- commence by 1st October 2019.

Priority is likely to be given to residents or people with a good connection to the area. You do not have to be a constituted organisation to apply. Support from external organisations (e.g. artists collectives, campaign organisations, local businesses) is encouraged.

We aren’t looking for activities that have guaranteed success (we believe that it is good to test things even if they don’t work out), in fact we welcome innovation and new ideas. We ask that you do what you say you will do in the application and provide updates to the Breathing Spaces team, so that we can keep the community and our funders informed of progress.

The decision will be made by the three Directors of The Southampton Collective together with three residents of St Denys who have been actively supporting the project.

About Breathing Spaces

Breathing Spaces is a community project in Southampton, which has at its heart clean air, liveable streets and increased health & wellbeing. In 2019 we are working with residents, community groups and businesses in the neighbourhood of St Denys, to collect data on local air pollution and test community approaches for cleaner air.

We are developing a robust evidence base on air quality in the area and giving a voice to local concerns, such as ‘rat running’ and poor air quality from congested main roads. We are also developing some mapping which will capture everyone’s comments and ideas – we’d love to try out and support some your creative solutions for healthy streets!

Bursary application template

You can either: complete our template by hand. You can collect an A1 template from October Books or contact the project team who can

arrange to send you a copy; or fill out the text boxes in the Word version (see below). We will then get this printed at A1 size for display; or you can submit information in a different paper-based format (e.g. poster) at A1 size, making sure you include answers to

the same questions.

Please try and make it as clear and visually appealing if you can. We will be asking for community feedback on these documents, so please don’t include any personal details that you would not want in the public domain. Please leave your contact details of name, email address, telephone number and any web / social media links on the back of the sheet.

Thanks very much for your interest. Please contact Rebecca Kinge, Mandi Bissett or Clare Diaper for any more information [email protected] / 07968 777261. You can also request to sign up for general emails about the project and the work of The Southampton Collective.
