Ruszczyk Review for the week of December 10th:This week in Math: *We have completed Unit 2 Skills and we will have our Unit Assessment on Tuesday. Please study the review guides with your child. Thanks for your support.

* Please make sure your child places his/her Math HW book back in their red John A. Sciole folder every day. First, have your child do the math page independently. Then please go over the page with them before bringing it back to school. If corrections need to be made, please help your child make the corrections. Immediate feedback is important. Thank you for your support.

***The homework is meant to reinforce what I am teaching in math. If your child is struggling with the HW, please stop and send me a note. Your child and I will complete it together. I don’t want your child to be frustrated or crying over their HW. ***

**Children need to master all addition and subtraction facts in second grade. Start by practicing addition facts with your children. They should be able to say the answer before you snap your finger.**

* Please save all the Fact Practice Sets for reference throughout this school year and for over the summer.

* We continued to practice Math Mountains. Please have students practice their math facts using the Math Mountain triangles that you received at Open House. Have your children show you how we visualize the triangle at school and then without looking we say the two addition equations and two subtraction equations for each one. This will help your children see the connection between addition and subtraction.

*I am very proud of your children. They are doing a great job beating their timed test score from September to Decemeber in addition and subtraction. Please go to the class portal to see how your children are progressing. Keep up the great work! Thanks for helping your children master their facts.

*We continue to say our Double Fact Chant every day. Please have your children practice this chant at home. This chant will help them to solve addition and subtraction facts. 1+1=2 2+2= 4 3+3=6 4+4=8 5+5=10 6+6=12 7+7=14 8+8=16 9+9=18 10+10=20. This chant will help to add up multiple addends.

*We learned a trick for determining if a number is even or odd. Students must always look at the ones place for this trick to work. Ask them to sing you the even song: 0,2,4,6,8. Then have them sing you the very odd song: 1,3,5,7,9. Please write down any number on a piece of paper and ask your child to tell you if it is even or odd. Remind them to look at the ones place and think of our two songs. Please continue practicing this skill at home. Try writing a very, very big number; have your child look in the ones place and tell you if that number is even or odd.

*We represented numbers to 200 and identified patterns involving place value.

*We represented numbers to 200 in different ways.

*We represented numbers using base ten numerals, expanded form, and number names.

*We compared two numbers using >, <, =symbols

*We counted money using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Please practice this skill at home by placing coins on a table for your child to count. Have him/her count up all the quarters firs then stop add the dimes on to that totalt hen stop, add on the nickels then stop add on the pennies.

*We practiced writing the total amounts in cent form and dollar notation form ($0.50)

*We added three addends together and we added four addends together.

This week in Science:

*We started our new unit: Save The Bees.

*We are learning about the interdependent relationships in ecosystems.

*Our Focus Question was: What is an ecosystem?

*Our Key Vocabulary words were: ecosystem, non-living, system

*Ask your child what important message did the Lorax tell us? (The Lorax reminds us that “UNLESS someone CARES a whole awful lot” things aren’t going to improve. We all must take responsibility for the ecosystem, or own world will be left as empty as the ecosystem we saw in the book.

*The theme of the interconnectedness and interdependence of the things that live in an ecosystem runs through this book as it runs through this unit. Both living and non-living have an effect on each other in an ecosystem.

In Health we continued to discuss Bullying.

*We will be working on NYS Character Traits and our Fusion Inside Out techniques during our class meetings every day.

*We discussed The Big 3: Treat Others Right, Makes Smart Decisions, and Maximize Your Potential.

*Our December key word is : Caring.

In Social Studies :

*We learned that different holidays are celebrated throughout the world.

In Reading: Remember the groups will vary throughout the year based on your child’ individual needs. If you ever have any questions, please contact me. Thank you.

*We have using our Schema and Visualizing in all our core subject areas.

*Our core vocabulary words are: enormous, buddy, tips, accident, obeys, attention.
