Supporting Young Children with their LearningCoping with COVID-19 Isolation

The next few weeks (and possibly months) will be a particularly difficult time for children and families, whilst schools and nurseries are closed and we are

advised to self-isolate or socially distance ourselves from our friends and family. Our normal structure and routine will be impossible to continue. We

hope to support our families with nursery children during this tricky time and hopefully share ideas to make things a little more manageable and fun.

More advice for your children from Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler!

If you have any outdoor chalk, make a hopscotch outside up to the number 10, shouting the numbers as you jump. If you don’t have chalk, jump forwards 10 times then jump backwards whilst shouting out the numbers.

HWBHave a look at this website and play Pause Button together. There are also some other activities that you might like to try:https://www.weeseeds.co.uk/exercises/pause-button

Can you walk for 1 minute, jog for 1 minute, then run fast for 1 minute on your daily exercise trip. How many times can you do this before having to stop? Listen to your heart rate, talk about what happens when you have done lots of exercise.

Numeracy Pretend to be an animal whilst counting down from 10 to 0 as described in this link:https://www.starcatchers.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Wee-Inspirations-Monkey-Ten.pdfCan you sing anymore songs where you count down from 10 or 20.

Food TechnologyEncourage your child to eat more fruit and veg by getting them to make their own salad in a jar. Get them to choose at least 4 vegetables e.g. carrots, peas, avocado, sweetcorn, cucumber. They can also make 1 of their choices a fruit like apples, strawberries, pineapple or grapes to add a bit of sweetness. They can then choose something like ham, chicken or cheese to add to the jar. Just add a little dressing to bring it all together.

Help your child to chop all the fruit and veg into small pieces. Also chop the meat/cheese if adding.

Put a little dressing in the bottom of the jar. If you don’t have any make your own by adding 2 tsp olive oil and 2tblsp of orange juice to the jar. If you would like it slightly sweeter add a drizzle of honey. Put the lid on the jar and give it a good shake.

Start layering the veg, fruit and meat/cheese in the jar.

MusicMusical Statues Play some music that your child can dance to and while they dance pause the music, when the music is paused the child will need to stand very still like a statue and if they don’t then they will lose the game but if they do then they are a winner.

Musical Bumps The same rules as musical statues apply but instead of standing still like statues, the child will sit down when the music is paused instead.

Create your own band –Ask your child what role they would like to play (bass guitar, drums, singer) and set up a ‘stage’ ready for your show. You don't need proper instruments -the children can just pretend to play or you can make your own instruments or play music from your phone or computer. You can even create a band name and make a poster for your show and maybe make some tickets to give to other members of your household to be the audience.https://www.netmums.com/activities/music-activities-for-kid

Put the lid back on and you can store the salad in the fridge until you’re ready to eat it.

When ready to eat just give the jar a good shake and pour it out onto a plate.

ENJOY!

Messy Play Spaghetti Snakes- cook spaghetti and once cool, add into a basin with a little bit of water (to save from sticking) for your child to play with. You can even add in food colouring and shaving foam for extra fun. https://www.playscotland.org/parents-families/im-bored/

Cornflour Clay: What you will need – · 1 Cup of Cornflour · 2 Cups of Salt · 3 Cups of Cold Water What to do Put the salt and 2 cups of water in a saucepan and bring to boil. Mix the rest of the cornflour with the remaining water and stir well. Blend the two mixtures together and kneed into a clay. Then mould the clay into any shape you like and once it is hard you can paint it.

You can cut up sponges into different shapes and use them to print paint onto paper. https://www.playscotland.org/parents-families/messy-play/

Science & TechnologyMaking your own VolcanoYou can use recycling, sand, mud whatever you have around to make your own volcano. Use an empty juice/water bottle in the centre this will be where the eruption happens. Harris and I added dinosaurs to ours to make it even more exciting. Add a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda and a tablespoon of dish soap, then add some food colouring (if you have any) lava is usually red or orange. Then add your white spirit vinegar and watch the eruption. I wonder why this happens?Exploring Water in Different FormsAt nursery we love water and love exploring it in different forms. Why not freeze some? See what happens? Add it in to a basin/bucket of water. What happens? Try it with warm water then cold water? Is there a difference? You could even freeze some small suitable items then discover how you are going to rescue them out again?

Have fun.

DON’T FORGETWHEN YOU COMPLETE ANY OF THESE IDEAS PLEASE TAKE A PHOTO AND UPLOAD THEM TO YOUR 2 Simple ACCOUNT. WE’D LOVE TO
