Chapter 1

General Characteristics

1. Introduction

The field of sport management has an important role in the development of the sports industry that today is one of the most important industries in the world. Training effective managers and experts in the field of sport management is an important responsibility that has been assigned to universities in the world. Among them, the Iranian universities specially

University of Tehran as first and greatest university in Iran play an important role in producing science and traininng experts in the field of sports management.

The Ph.D. degree in Sport Management, which follows the Master's Degree Program aims to educate professionals and researchers in the field of sport management in various sectors of the sport industry. Ph.D. in Sport Management, like master degree consist of various fields such as marketing management, strategic management, sport media management, leisure and recreation management, sport facilities and events management. At this stage, students entering the course as Ph.D. Student have the opportunity to work in the different designated sport domains and can learn different lessons in accordance with the necessities of the sports industry. Doing research in area of interest, help students achieve specialist expertise in their area of interest in field of sport management.

2. Definition

Sport management defined as planning, organizing, controlling and supervising sport and physical education. The purpose of this field is to provide well-known and skilled managers and experts to manage the affairs of sport organizations of the country. Physical education and sport as a extensive area, need to have competent and efficient managers at different levels. therefore the existence of appropriate and efficient managers for sports organizations is indispensable.

3. Goals

The purpose of the Ph.D program of sport management is to train and provide specialists with critical thinking and problem solving skills and ability to research, teach, and advicing in the sport industry. In this course, students analyze sport industry by their researchs in the fields of entrepreneurship, business, economics, marketing and communication in various fields of sport including recreational, educational, championship and professional sport to acquire the ability to localize scientific achievements in the development of the country's sports industry.

4. Importance and necessity

The necessity of conducting research, reviewing and providing effective strategies for the development of the sport and creating scientific infrastructures for the development of communication and economic power and the use of ideas and creativity in the development of employment in the sport industry and the possibility of competition with the countries of the world, The training of qualified specialists in the field of sports management is necessary.

5. Course Duration and Certificate

course duration and certificate is in accordance with the rules of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran.

6. Credits number and type

The total number of credits of Ph.D course in Sport Management are 36 credits (18 instructional and 18 dissertation credits) as follows in Table 1:

7. Roles, abilities and competencies of the graduates

Graduates of this course will have the following general and specialized abilities
