Year 3 - Week beginning 4th May

READING TASKS

1. Read the extract below from Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. Text mark the text. When you are reading the text and you notice a pause, you must write a / mark. When you are reading the text and you feel you need to add more expression, draw around the word with a circle. It may help if your parents / sibling read the text to you, whilst you text mark, adding / and circles round words in the appropriate places.

Tranio and his best friend Livia often used to walk through the busy streets of the Roman city of Pompeii. They would pass the Theatre where Tranio’s father acted in the pantomimes with masked actors and leaping acrobats. When they walked past the bakery they could smell the delicious aroma of the loaves that Livia’s family were cooking in their oven as it wafted down the street. The harbour at the mouth of the River Sarmus was their favourite place to sit, watching the ships being loaded with pots of wine, oil and spices or the fishermen unloading all the fish they had caught. Beyond the massive city walls, they could see Pompeii’s greatest protector in the distance. They called it Vesuvius, the Gentle Mountain. Could anyone feel safer than here, Tranio used to wonder, was there anywhere more beautiful than Pompeii?

3. Answer these questions based on the text from task 1. - Who is Tranio’s best friend? - What could Tranio and Livia smell as they walked past the bakery? - What do you think the Gentle Mountain really is? Why?

4. Answer these questions based on the text from task 1.- What was Tranio’s and Livia’s favourite place to sit?- What did the fishermen unload from their boats?- How do you think Tranio felt at this point in the story? Why do you think that?

WRITING TASKS

Monday 4 th May Using the picture of Venice, write a short setting description following the rules below.

1st sentence : Start with a preposition (A word that tells you where something is, e.g. On, under, behind, above, next to)2nd sentence: include an expanded noun phrase (An adjective to describe the noun that is before the noun in the sentence. e.g. The beautiful gondola sailed along the peaceful canal.)3rd sentence: include a simile (Comparing one object to another, e.g. The sky is as blue as a blueberry)4th sentence : Start with an –ing verb (e.g. Towering above the water, a ridig bridge holds several excited tourists)5th sentence: be creative!

Tuesday 5 th May You are going to write a short setting description using your 5 senses (touch, taste, smell, sight and hear). You could stand in your garden, your bedroom or anywhere you like! Think about how you would describe your surroundings using your senses. Write a paragraph describing what is around you, ensuring you include a sentence about what you can hear, what you can smell, what you can see, what you might taste and what it might feel like to touch something near you.

Wednesday 6 th May This picture looks like a normal family however when you take a closer look you might notice some strange things! Write 10 questions about this photo, for example ‘Does the man realise he is reading the newspaper upside down?’ Or ‘Why is the girl stirring her drink with a knife?’

Thursday 7 th May

Mr. Whoops has made some spelling mistakes! The circled words have all been spelled incorrectly. Using a dictionary, find the correct spellings of the words.

Challenge: Write new sentences using the words you have corrected.

Friday 8 th May

Complete the word search on the next page. All of the words are prepositions. This means that they describe where an object is in relation to another object.

When you have found all of the words, choose 5 of them to write into 5 exciting sentences.

What does it make you think of? What story do you think it is telling? What instruments do you think you can hear in it? Now draw along to the music, take note of when it is louder, quieter, going fast or slow! Don’t worry if your page looks like some scribbles, have fun and let your hand move along freely to the music.
