How is coal transported?

From mine to market, coal can be transported in a number of ways.

Once coal has been processed it is ready to be transported in most cases by rail. In some states in Australia including Queensland, coal is the single most valuable freight item. Rail systems can be funded by the state and by the companies themselves in a number of cases.

Trains can be more than 2 kilometres in length and can carry around 8,500 tonnes of coal. Aluminium wagons with rotating couplings enable the wagons to be emptied by being turned upside down to reduce unloading times.

If coal is to be used domestically in the production of electricity, it can be transported by train or, if the power station is located nearby, an overland conveyor system is

used to transport the coal directly from the mine to the station.

At the ports, conveyors can also be used to carry the coal from the stockpile to ship loading berths.

Coal is exported to 120 customers in 30 countries. Most of Queensland’s coal is exported to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Europe, but coal is also sold to other countries such as India, China, Algeria, Egypt, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.
