APPLERIDGE CORE MARCH 2017

Les Miserables

Movement Matters

Great Courses

The Movement Matters Workshop is a three-week program led by local dance instructor, Amy Bush, designed for all ages and abilities. The workshop is designed to encompass simple and fun freestyle movements, keeping the mind and body active and connected.

Getting Saucy

The residents will enjoy an outing to see the Corning Painted Post High School drama club presents one of the most beloved musicals of all time, Les Miserables. This is the story of a French peasant, and his mission for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child.

March has officially been recognized as Music In Our Schools month, where music education is the focus in schools across the nation. Residents may recognize this effort by supporting the Orchestra of the Southern Tier Finger Lakes. The orchestra is the region’s only professional symphony orchestra, conducted by Toshiyuki Shimada. Their mission is to introduce students to the beauty of symphonic music, the unique characteristics of sound and the diverse instruments of the orchestra.  The program includes Benjamin Britten’s “The Young People’s Guide to the Orchestra,” Tchaikovsky’s stunning waltz from “Sleeping Beauty” and a concerto featuring a student soloist, Jonathan Fenwick — the winner of the Hertzog Competition.

Symphony of Sounds

The community is getting a little saucy this month in preparation of National Sauce Month. Executive Chef, Jan Milroy and the recreation department are teaming up to present a fun and interactive food demonstration. Residents will experience how to assemble a sauce that is rich with flavor and sure to tempt their taste buds.

Great Courses are the leading global media brand for lifelong learning and personal enrichment. Residents can expand their minds each week by some of the most fascinating videos available, taught by some of the world’s greatest educators. This month, Thomas Childers, professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania, speaks about WWII military and social history. Topics include as follows: The Origins of the Second World War, The Battle of Britain, The Germans Before Moscow, The Height of Japanese Power, War in the Air, The Race for Berlin and The Cost of the War.

The program incorporates an intergenerational aspect bringing together residents and area youth. Resident family members under the age of fifteen are encouraged to participate.

March Birthdays Appleseed’s

St. Patrick’s Day

Appleseed’s Ladies group works to develop meaningful relationships and bonds amongst the women both in and outside the community. The ladies group will connect with nature this month by visiting Tioga Gardens in Owego, NY. They will be able to meander through over eleven greenhouses chock full of everything necessary to host a bountiful and beautiful garden. From the lush and hardy greenery to the bright and vivid flowers, there is something for everyone. Afterwards the ladies will settle in for lunch at the Blue Dolphin Restaurant to discuss all of their findings over a delicious Greek inspired meal.

The expression “Glamma” has been trending now for some time and its meaning is derived from the words “glamourous grandma.” This term refers to the new generation of grandmas that are stylish in the way they live and dress. Appleridge has a bevy of Glammas! The beauty salon and the recreation department are teaming up to teach them make-up techniques allowing their inner glam to shine through.

Going Glamma

Irish eyes will be smiling on St. Patrick’s Day with plenty of activities to keep everyone green with envy. Residents will gather for a huge St. Patrick’s Day event featuring green beer, Irish soda bread, games and the crowning of the King, Queen and Jester of 2017.

The talented Ring of Chiarraighe Celtic Dancers will entertain friends and neighbors right before they feast on some delicious corned beef and cabbage for dinner. The celebration doesn’t end there, the residents will be decked out in their green garb joining the festivities at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Horseheads.
