THE HANDCLASP DECEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020 Dear members and friends, Have you ever heard the nursery rhyme, “One, two, buckle my shoe; three, four, open the door; five, six pick up sticks?” Well, that’s all I can remember! I could Google it or even go old-fashioned and visit a library and look it up. But you get the point. We human creations of God have discovered that using memory tricks is an age-old way of learning. It was the fourth century in France when the season of Advent was created by the early church leaders. Several centuries ago, the Germanic people of Europe created the Advent Wreath. A few centuries later the tradition came to America. The point of remembering something is to ascribe or give it meaning. Like many traditions they were created to combat pagan rituals. When it became necessary to explain the incarnation, the church developed the seasonal observance of Advent. The word Advent means “to come to” from two Latin words: “ad” and “venire”. The message of Advent is that God is coming to the world in Christ. The incarnation is extremely significant because it marks the culmination of old testament covenant promises as well as the predictions by the prophets. Thus, Advent is specifically a time to prepare for His incarnation, the birth of a child born in a manger who is the messiah – “the word became flesh”. In this child Jesus, God broke through history and Advent serves to prepares us for this fulfillment. When it was decided that we should have a church year, Advent was the natural choice to be its first season. Easter was the natural choice to be the high point of the church year because without the resurrection, we would not be able to call ourselves disciples of the risen Lord. THE HANDCLASP DECEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020

  Dear members and friends,

Have you ever heard the nursery rhyme, “One, two, buckle my shoe; three, four, open the door; five, six pick up sticks?” Well, that’s all I can remember!

Ok, by now you know that my calling as a pastor is something I take more seriously than my daydreams of creative writing.

Advent is natural as the first season of the church year because life begins at birth.  For the Christian, eternal life begins at Baptism, but that’s another theological conversation altogether. So, which came first, Advent or the Advent Wreath?

Well, you guessed it the Advent wreath took second place.  Different denominations and Christian cultures contributed to the development of the Advent wreath.

The Advent wreath is traditionally composed of evergreens that signify continuous life. This is why the greens are place on a circular stand or structure because the church wanted to convey that the greenery symbolizes the eternal everlasting love of God. Furthermore, the evergreens were introduced to further enhance our faith. The laurel, or the laurel green leaves sometimes used on a wreath signify victory over persecution and suffering. Or as another source states, “ Laurel is a sign of victory over sin and, because neither it nor holly drops its leaves, this represents the eternity of God.” The pine, holly and yew (a tree species that produces berrylike fruit) represent immortality. Of course, the cedar symbolizes strength and healing.  The holly has special meaning because its prickly leaves remind us of the crown of thorns that Jesus wore on the cross. It is also interesting that

Page 2:   · Web viewTHE HANDCLASP DECEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020. Dear members and friends, Have you ever heard the nursery rhyme, “One, two, buckle my shoe; three, four, open the door; five,

an old legend proclaims that the cross which Jesus hung and died on was made of holly.

The wreath symbolizes the eternity of God. It is significant because a circle has no beginning or end, just like God who is eternal, and in Christ who is in God. In Christ, we are given the gift of everlasting life. Furthermore, the pinecones, nuts and seedpods used to decorate the wreath are appropriate because they symbolize life and resurrection as well. When the Advent wreath is assembled, the congregation is blessed with a wonderful illustration of immortality of the soul and the reminder of everlasting life. This is promised to us through Jesus Christ the eternal “Word made flesh”. Through the Incarnation he entered our world to become human and win the battle over sin and death through, “His own passion, death and resurrection.”

Another Tradition that has been passed down was that since Advent is four weeks long, four candles should be used on the wreath to count down to the Sunday before the Nativity of our Lord. This festival was set by the church to be December 25th. Over time, Lutherans and other denominations have varied their use of three blue and one pink candle for the four weeks.  Now most Lutheran churches stick to the idea that all four candles should be blue which is the color that signifies hope. And hope is one of the themes of the Advent season.  Many congregations still give meaning to each weekly candle even though they are all the same color. Overall, the significance of the Advent wreath has grown to be a powerful symbol to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Which gives us a chance to reflect on the meaning and good news of the birth of Jesus Christ.

This year we will be dedicating a new Advent Wreath to the glory of Go by a collection of families for the years 2011-2014. The listing of the memorial donor families can be found on page 8.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor C. Andrew Carr
