Meeting Minutes of January 27, 2019 Annual Congregational Meeting

On Sunday, January 27, 2019, St John’s Lutheran Church held its annual congregational meeting in Miller Hall following worship service and a soup and sandwich luncheon served by the Fellowship Committee.

The meeting was called to order at 12:35 p.m. by Pastor Erin. Of the 58 people in attendance, our necessary quorum of 12 was met. Devotions from the inside cover of the Bulletin of Reports was led by Pr. Erin, and we were led in song by Derek Schofield. (Constitutional determination of a quorum was based on the note at the bottom on page one of the Bulletin of Reports.)

The minutes of the Congregation meetings of 1/28/18 and 10/21/18 were reviewed as were the 2019 Congregation Council members, liaisons and committee chairs. A motion was made by Herb Willson to accept the minutes of the 2018 Congregation meetings and the 2019 Council members, liaisons and committee chairs. The motion was seconded by Michelle Thomas, and was approved.

The report of the Financial Secretary was presented. There were no additions or discussion so a motion was made by Bob Reimer and seconded by Dotty Sites to approve the report. The motion carried.

Debbie Willson presented the Treasurer’s report. She noted that we met our Mission Support pledge, acknowledged an increase in utility expenses and a decrease in offerings by about $4000.00. In April, $10,000 was moved from the ‘mortgage repay’ account into the memorial fund. Richard Krug’s mortgage was paid off and applied to ‘mortgage repay’. Debbie stated that per Council’s directive, $7,000 was given to Richard as a severance pay and in gratitude for his years of service. We ended the year with a $22,000 deficit - $8,000 of which was paid back by generous giving. We carried the remaining $14,000 deficit forward. Ed Sites made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report for 2018. The motion was seconded by Jack Sutter and was carried.

The Proposed 2019 budget was discussed. A question was posed as to how the Interim Pastor’s salary is calculated. The amount of Pr. Erin’s salary is determined by recommendations and guidelines from the ELCA. The amount of expected revenue from ‘Estimated Non-Pledged Envelope Offerings’ was questioned. The Financial secretary explained that this figure is based on the previous year, and that this represents typical giving from members that don’t use pledge cards. It was pointed out that the $14,000 deficit that is being carried forward is not reflected in the budget. Council determined that this is not a ‘spending’ deficit but rather a ‘giving’ deficit. The budget reflects our expenditures. Theresa Drye moved to accept the 2019 Budget as proposed, and the motion was seconded by Cody Schaar. The motion carried.

The Organ Fund was discussed and a question was raised as to the lender of the money. St. John’s borrowed $70,000 from Mutual Investment Funds to finance the purchase of the organ. The balance remaining on the loan is $61,646. Karan Cehlar made a motion to accept the report. The motion was seconded by Shirley Dickson and was carried.

Before Pr. Erin presented her report, she acknowledged Tim Hess who will be retiring from the St. John’s custodian position on 1/31. Pr. thanked him for his 22 years of service, and presented him with a small gift. Tim Hess took the podium for a brief time to talk about this service with SJ’s and acknowledged those who came before him. Michelle Thomas moved to accept the Pastor’s report and the motion was seconded by John Cehlar. The motion carried.

The Reports of the Organizations & Auxiliaries were presented. There were no changes, additions or discussion. Judy Sabolic moved to accept the reports, and the motion was seconded by Theresa Drye. The motion carried.

Ma’s Pantry report was presented. Ed Sites had a brief discussion regarding the need for paper bags for the recipients at Ma’s Pantry. Approximately 500 paper bags per month are needed and cost $50. Dr. Sites encouraged donations for this, our biggest community outreach program at SJ’s. Bob

Reimer moved to accept the Ma’s Pantry report, and the motion was seconded by Carla Schlegel. The motion carried.

Under Old Business, it was pointed out that an Exit sign still needs installed above the door in the front of the sanctuary, and that our fire extinguishers should be moved to better locations. They should also be marked with lighted signs.

Also discussed as Old Business was the lack of Sunday School. Pr. Erin pointed out that the Sunday School program at St. John’s has gone the way of most Sunday school programs in most main-stream Protestant churches. She pointed out that we now have Faith Formation events, and believes that we are on the right track with these events. She also noted that for most of history, the formation of young people’s faith took place in the home. Everyone was urged to attend the Faith Formation events.

Business then turned to the election of the final member of Council. Richard Barr had been approached by the Council nominating committee, and had agreed to serve. Theresa Drye moved to elect Richard Barr as a member of Council. Michelle Thomas seconded, and the motion carried.

Appointed to serve as voting members to the 2019 SWPA Synod Assembly at California University of PA in June of 2019 are Judi Rogers and Cody Schaar. A motion to accept their appointments was made by Theresa Drye, and seconded by Sarah Lundie. The motion carried.

A motion was made by Theresa Drye to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Tim Hess. The motion was carried. Following a prayer, the meeting adjourned at 1:17.

Respectfully submitted, Debi Maurizi

REPORTS OF THE COMMITTEES

Christian Education and Youth

The last time the Elementary Sunday school class had any students was October 2018. The teachers remained hopeful, preparing a lesson each week, but by the Fall of 2019 we faced the fact that we needed to reach the children of St John’s in a different way. Currently, we no longer offer Elementary Christian education on Sunday mornings.

The Confirmation class had three young men, using the “Colaboration” curriculum. Attendance became irregular. To avoid pressure when only one student was present, we joined the Adult Coffee and Conversation class as they studied the parables. The students decided they really liked the curriculum, so we joined the Adults for the remainder of the Spring.

In the Fall we resumed Confirmation class with two young men. Pastor Erin took over leadership of the Confirmation class and got us involved in a pilot program being offered by the Synod. “Chosen Together“ is a curriculum designed for congregations with small confirmation classes. This program offers the opportunity to interact, via Facebook, with a larger group. Students have a weekly schedule to follow that includes an on-line assignment. Thank you to Judi Rogers for helping with Facebook. On Sunday mornings we review that week’s lesson and assignment, then we go out into the narthex and talk with the congregation members that are present. This program is intended to be completed and the students ready to confirm their faith, if they wish, by May 2020.

We tried something different this year for VBS. On July 13 & 14 we saddled up for a trailblazing weekend of fun at St. John’s Lutheran Church for Yee-Haw VBS! We learned about the greatest truth of all - God is good!

The Adult Coffee and Conversation Group attendance remains steady with 10-14 people in attendance each week. Coffee and sweet treats are enjoyed, along with lively discussion. In the past year the class has completed several series, “Simon Peter”; “Parables and Luke “by Pastor Ken Bailey, “How Lutherans Interpret the Bible” by Mark Allen Powell; and study based on the book of Acts. For Advent the group found a study by Amy-Jill Levine, a University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies and Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt School of Divinity.

Faith Formation events have a growing attendance. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month, share a meal and an activity or craft. We have made Peace Cranes, played games at a Marty Party, learned about building self -confidence and made ornaments for shut -ins. We are open to new ideas for dinner and activities that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Finally, Christian Education sponsored Christmas Caroling to our shut ins the Saturday after Christmas.

I would like to thank the committee members for continuing to move forward and spread the gospel; Michelle Thomas, Ed and Sue Ward, Sherie Cannin, Sarah Lundie and all who faithfully attend our events.

Respectfully submittedBrenda Neundorf, Chair

Evangelism and Communication

It was a busy year for this committee. In the spring, we debuted an electronic newsletter to replace the bi-monthly paper newsletter. The e-newsletter is now published on a monthly basis, with a significant savings to the congregation in postage and paper. If you aren’t getting the e-newsletter in your email inbox and wish to subscribe, contact Cindy Haag at [email protected]. (Those folks who still require a paper newsletter are sent a print-out of the e-newsletter).

The committee actively maintains St. John’s Facebook page, including weekly worship posts, special event listings and event photos. A live feed of sermons was also posted during Pastor Erin’s tenure, often with the assistance of our confirmation students. Please be sure to like and follow the Facebook page, and share our posts!

The church website (stjohnsnorthversailles.com) is also maintained, including the posting of event photos. New this year to the website is a “Donate Now” button to facilitate giving to St. John’s.

Check out our new Instagram account at stjohnsnvpa and follow along as we begin to integrate it into our overall messaging. The committee has also encouraged the use of Texted.ly and have begun using it monthly. Subscribe to these messages by texting stjohns to 33222 on your cell phone.

To help promote our church to the community, we placed advertisements in several local publications including the North Versailles Township Anniversary booklet, the East Allegheny High School spring musical playbill, and the Officer Phil booklet, which is distributed to EA elementary school children.

Just prior to the start of Advent, the committee created and distributed Advent/Christmas postcard invitations, which congregation members were encouraged to take and share with friends, family, and neighbors inviting the community to join St. John’s celebration of the season.

Other actions taken by this committee include re-evaluating the church internet/phone provider (resulting in a savings of almost $100 per month), and changing the church email address (which addressed problems experienced with the prior email provider).

Thanks to all committee members including: John Light, Sarah Lundie, Brenda Neundorf, and Pastor Erin who helped with these projects involving outreach to our church and community.

Respectfully submitted,Cindy Haag and Judi Rogers, Co-Chairs

Fellowship Committee

This year the goal of the Fellowship committee was to maintain consistency during our time of transition while simultaneously developing new events for the congregation to enjoy. The year began with traditional events including the Congregational Meeting Luncheon in January, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner/Mardi Gras in March and Easter Breakfast in April. Each of these events was successful and the majority of costs were covered through freewill offering.

Coffee fellowship is another primary focus of the committee. It is an integral part of developing relationships within the members of the congregation. The committee worked with Council to create a volunteer aspect to this time and many members of St. John’s were willing to provide their time and abilities towards making coffee fellowship a success. We have recommended to continue weekly coffee fellowship and the Council is focused on ensuring that weekends which are not sponsored will be hosted by members of the Council.

New events and ideas were also created throughout the year as well. Over 25 members of St. John’s attended a Pirates baseball game at PNC Park in August! The Pirates had a rough Sunday afternoon, but our trip was a success and we hope to continue this renewed tradition in 2020. We also tried to update presentations of unique after service receptions such as the Lenten services and our Hanging of the Greens service by providing different options at each event.

17

Page 18:   · Web viewst. john’s evangelical lutheran church. annual congregational meeting. january 2. 6, 20. 20. 1. 1: 30. p.m. order of business

The Fellowship committee would like to thank all members of St. John’s for creating memories in 2019 by volunteering with setup, groceries and supplies, preparation, presentation and, most importantly, clean-up throughout the year. As we move forward in 2020, we hope to continue our traditions and create new memories in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Respectfully Submitted,David Lundie, Chair

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee at St. John’s, which also includes the Treasurer and Financial Secretary, is responsible for the management of the congregation’s money, investments, and insurance needs. This Committee is responsible for overseeing an annual year-end audit of all the congregation’s books and makes recommendations to the Congregation Council for financial investments and yearly budgets. The Finance Committee also helps keep track of the special fund monies and researches the best ways to get the most interest on our accounts. Through the Financial Secretary, the committee organizes the weekly offering counters and sends out quarterly financial statements to members of the congregation.

The 2019 Finance Committee members include Chairperson Sherie Cannin, Financial Secretary Therese Drye, Treasurer Deb Willson, Judy Sabolic, Joyce Tritsch, Joe Lundie, and Bertie Palmieri.

On February 4, 2019, we met to discuss the Memorial Fund CD which then had a balance of $4,688.51 and was scheduled to mature on April 20, 2019. At that time, the Finance Committee made a recommendation via motion to Council, and Council approved unanimously to pull the amount of $5,311.49 from the MPA Memorials Fund and add the two amounts together for a total of $10,000, and reinvest the money in a 3-year term CD at the fixed rate of 2.75% APR. This CD is scheduled to mature on April 20, 2022 and has a balance of $10,158.03 (as of 11/30/19).

There was also a discussion at that time of the MPA Mortgage Repay (Parsonage) Fund (balance then was $63,772.65). The Finance Committee made a recommendation via motion to Council, and Council approved unanimously to place $50,000 of the MPA Mortgage Repay (Parsonage) funds and invest in a 1-year term CD at the fixed rate of 1.30% APR. This CD is scheduled to mature on March 7, 2020 and has a balance of $50,350.97 (as of 11/30/19).

Between July 2018 through mid-February 2019, Financial Chairperson Sherie Cannin revised the Offering Collection and Counting Policy and Procedures in an effort to make them current and relevant. A Counter Meeting was held on Sunday, February 17th following worship at which time a review of the updated “Offering Collection and Counting Policy and Procedures” occurred. The finalized “Offering Collection and Counting Policy and Procedures” was presented to and approved by Council during the March council meeting.

The Finance Committee next met on May 6, 2019 and reviewed and discussed the following: year-to-date finances; 2018 deficit issues and creation of the “Ketchup Campaign”; Tithe-ly Account; Norma Hutton’s inFaith Community Foundation Account annual deposit; the updated “Offering Collection and Counting Policy and Procedures”; Weekly Counter Sheet; and, a request for kitchen items.

On September 17, 2019, the Finance Committee met to discuss and review the following: year-to-date finances; 2018 deficit issues and having a “Break-Even” Campaign; SWPA Synod guidelines as to Pastoral Salary, Housing allowance, Pension, and Health Insurance; Property/Liability/Worker’s Compensation Insurance Policy proposals and made note that in July 2020 it will be prudent to shop around for quotes from other companies; talked briefly with Mutual Ministry with regard to salary increases; and, reviewed and compared the 2019 budget in order propose and recommend a 2020 budget.

Financial Chairperson, Sherie Cannin, wrote a letter that was mailed home at the end of September 2019 and delivered a Minute for Mission the weekend of September 28-29 to discuss the

182018 deficit and the “Ketchup Campaign” at that point in time. The purpose of the letter and Minute for Mission was to talk about the financial future of St. John’s and to be cognizant of how the 2018 deficit will adversely affect us, giving prayerful consideration to whether this deficit is something we want to have on our books as we enter into the Call process.

The Finance Committee is very grateful to you for your generosity and asks for your continuing prayers and financial support as we seek to serve God in our ministries.

Blessings in faith and finance to you always.Sherie Cannin, Chair

Long Range Planning

Long Range Planning continues to have oversight and responsibility for keeping St John’s on track with our Strategic Plan developed after the 2016 CAT survey, See attached Goal Worksheet.Goal #1 Cultivate an internal culture that intentionally develops relationships in new and creative ways for all ages.

- We continue to redefine to roles of Usher versus Greeter.- Offered the opportunity for congregation members not involved on committees, to provide Coffee

Fellowship after Sunday worship.- Faith Formation events are open to all ages, occur on the second Tuesday of the month, 6:30- 8 pm.

Social Ministry

The Social Ministry Committee is committed to making disciples of all nations. It is our goal to make the congregation aware of the needs of others in our community, throughout the nation, as well as needs from around the world. We strive to help those in need by raising awareness for various causes throughout the year so you can give support as you are able. It is also through this committee that St. John’s sponsors our ELCA missionary, Pastor Jeffrey Truscott, as he spreads God’s Word across the world.

The 2019 Social Ministry Committee members include Co-Chairperson Judy Jamison, Co-Chairperson Sherie Cannin, Ed Sites, and Dotty Sites.

On Sunday, May 5, 2019, Judy and Sherie met and had a discussion of the various appeals that Social Ministry engages in on an annual basis which include:

Blanket Appeal in February Red Cross – Shelter Team World Hunger Wrapped in Love Program Disaster Relief Abiding Ministries Missionary – Jeffrey Truscott Giving Tree in DecemberMa’s Pantry EASD donation for Snowflake Shop

We also discussed the Food Ministry, a sub-committee of Social Ministry, and potentially hosting and sponsoring a monthly or bi-monthly community meal. Unfortunately, there are challenges to this idea due to issues finding help and financial support with the event. We also discussed organizing a collection the third weekend of every month for ELCA Good Gifts. This idea was presented to Council a few times in 2019; however, Council decided we should focus on eliminating the 2018 deficit first.

On December 22nd, Judy and Sherie delivered the Wrapped in Love gifts to the two children of a father from North Versailles who is currently incarcerated.

A very special thank you is extended to Ed and Dotty Sites for their extreme dedication and devotion to Ma’s Pantry and for faithfully helping those in need in our local community.

The Social Ministry Committee is grateful for your dedication, generosity, and continued prayers in support of these wonderful causes as we seek to serve God in our ministries.

Stewardship Report

This year we began the third leg of our three year journey exploring the question of “What it means to give of ourselves” as we seek to grow in discipleship and as Christian stewards. We have explored over these past three years: First We Give of Ourselves; Giving in Grace; Giving in Gratitude; and Giving in Generosity. This was a three-year Stewardship program designed by Pastor Kurt Nordby and recommended by our Congregation Council.

With joy and thanksgiving we look forward to many more years of ministry and worshipping God. As faithful stewards of all He has given us, we give thanks for your part in the Stewardship of St. John’s. Stewardship is not just money but all the ways you give of yourself, money, time and talents.

I would like to give thanks for the opportunity to be your Stewardship chair over the past many years. I would also like to thank Richard Barr for stepping up to be the Stewardship liaison to the Congregation Council and for all his help this year. I would also like to thank Glenda Miller, Julie Sacraponti and Susan Reimer for their work on the committee over the past years.

Worship and Music Committee

The Worship and Music Committee has the task of planning all components of worship services. All aspects of worship should facilitate our congregation’s ability to worship God. The worship service is the central unifying event in the life of a congregation.

Our goals include:- Enhance the worship experience through a variety of music and liturgies.- Effectively use the worship space.- Evaluations of the effectiveness of the regular liturgies and special events.- Assist the choir director/organist in the use of liturgical music and hymns. 2019 has been a productive year for our committee. We met every 2-3 months for the purpose of

planning the rotation of the liturgy settings using Evangelical Lutheran Worship and With One Voice. St. John’s continues to use the various liturgy settings available to us, with generally positive feedback from the congregation. We also plan for certain special events.

The Lenten Season began on Ash Wednesday with two services (11 a.m. and 7 p.m.) using the imposition of ashes. Pastor Erin also distributed ashes outside our church along Route 30, calling it “Ashes to Go”. Once again, weekly community Lenten services were hosted by the Hilltop Ministerium on Wednesday evenings. St. John’s hosted two of these services.

Palm/Passion Weekend (April 13-14) marked the beginning of Holy Week with a procession of palms and dramatic reading of the Passion of our Lord.

On Maundy Thursday (April 18), we continued our hand washing ritual. The stripping of the altar in preparation for Good Friday was conducted by the Altar Guild.

Our Good Friday Tenebrae Service was held on April 19. It is always meaningful. Easter Weekend (April 20-21) was very beautiful. We had one service at 10:45 a.m. which

was meaningful and memorable with the choir and handbell choir adding their talents. The sanctuary was beautifully decorated with Easter Tulips.

Music Appreciation Weekend gave us the opportunity to give thanks and recognize our music leadership: Director of Music/Organist Derek Schofield, our Saturday evening worship leader Jim Overly, and our Handbell Choir Director Dr. Herb Willson. We thank these three for their dedication to providing us with beautiful music at St. John’s.

Sunday School was recessed for the Summer, and Sunday morning worship was moved to 9:30 a.m. for the duration of the Summer.

The annual “Worship in the Park” church picnic was held at Cedar I Grove at White Oak Park on June 23. St. John’s provided the chicken, and many people brought a covered dish to share.

On Pentecost Weekend (June 8-9), there was a happy coincidence of calendar planning. In addition to being Pentecost weekend, it also happened to be the weekend of St. John’s Reconciling in Christ Weekend. Pastor Erin offered me the opportunity to preach the sermon.

During the summer, the Worship and Music committee conducted a survey asking the congregation two questions: Should we continue to have the White Oak Picnic and Outdoor service? The second question being: Should we continue our current worship schedule, or move to 10:00 a.m. year-round? After reviewing the results of the survey, we decided to recommend to Council to move to 10:00 a.m. year-round, which was approved. As for the Church Picnic, there is still some discussion to have about that, however Cedar I has been reserved for us to use next summer, no matter what our plans.

Reformation Weekend was celebrated on October 26-27. All Saints Weekend was observed November 2-3. Members participated in our tradition of

lighting memorial candles and placing them in sand as we sang For all the Saints. Once again, the Worship and Music committee has asked members of the congregation to bring

in framed pictures of their loved ones who have joined the Church Triumphant. The photos were placed around the sanctuary and it was a powerful witness of our love for those who have gone before us. This year provided us the opportunity to remember those who have passed on in a special prayer.

In November, the Women of the ELCA provided leadership for the annual Thankoffering Weekend Services.

On December 1, we began our Advent Journey, preparing for the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This year, the Children’s Sermon had to do with “finding the shepherd”.

On December 8, we hosted the traditional Hanging of the Greens Service, where we learned the use, meanings and history of the traditional Christmas decorations. Many favorite Christmas hymns or carols, choir and handbell anthems accompanied us. This year, instead of having the event in the evening, we held it during the morning worship service to generally positive comments, and slightly increased attendance.

Christmas Eve was again celebrated with two services. The 7:30 p.m. service was designed especially for children and families. The 10:30 p.m. traditional festival service included traditional carols and hymns and choir and a meaningful Gospel procession to “bring the story of Jesus’ birth to the people”. Both services included Holy Communion.

I want to extend a special thank you to all my committee members: Pastor Erin, Derek Schofield, Cindy Luke, Sharyn Donahue, Brenda Neundorf, Carla Schlegel and Herb Willson. You are always welcome to join our committee!

Funeral Committee

The women of St. John’s offer an important and loving ministry to families and friends after the loss of a loved one. It is comforting for them to know that they are among caring family and friends at their time of loss. As a committee we come together to cook, set tables and serve a delicious meal in Miller Hall.

There is never a charge to St. John’s for this service as the cost is covered by donations from the families. These donations allow this ministry to continue for others.

This year, the funeral committee prepared meals for the families of our members Jerry Robinson and Nigel Walsh, as well as the family of Francis Ward, Ed Ward’s father.

I want to thank everyone who helped this year. This ministry and our meals would not be as special or as meaningful to the families without all of you.

Women of the ELCA

In 2019, the St. John’s Unit of Women of the ELCA met on the third Wednesdays of the month at 7:00 p.m. in Miller Hall at St. John’s. During our time together we shared Bible devotions, enjoyed dessert and fellowship, and provided support to the activities we do together. Our ongoing projects include:

-maintaining and distributing the various items in “Mission Central” that are collected throughout the year (empty prescription bottles, toys for hospitals, aluminum tabs for Ronald McDonald House, Campbell Soup Labels and greeting card fronts for the St. Jude Ranch for Children).-sponsoring Altar flowers during the year.-providing our homebound members with cards and gift bags at Christmas and Easter.-mailing our homebound members birthday cards.-assisting the altar guild with cleanup of pew hymnal racks, sharpening of pencils, and restocking of envelopes and note paper.-supporting the St. John’s Funeral Committee monetarily and with helping hands when needed.-providing meals for households of our church family during times of change or stress through the “Loaves and Dishes program. As of the end of the year, twelve meals have been offered by our volunteers. We welcome anyone who would like to help with this ministry and especially appreciate being notified of any need for meals you may know of.

A new project was begun with a redesign of the altar boxes in the sanctuary. The boxes were cleaned and we have been changing the decor to reflect the seasons of the church year. We are enjoying the opportunity to visually enhance the beauty of our worship together.

Donations to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and H E A R T H were made with generous giving from the congregation.

Our events included having a “potluck picnic” in June, visiting the DaVinci exhibit at the Carnegie Science Center, serving Sunday Coffee Fellowship in July, and providing leadership for the ThankOffering services in November.

At the June picnic, Sarah Lundie, Alberta Palmieri, and Karan Cehlar were re-elected as President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Unit.

Our group is open to all. All women of St John’s are considered to be members. You do not need to attend a meeting in order to participate in any of our activities but we would love to see you there for fellowship and dessert!

MA’s PantryP.O. Box 1East McKeesport, PA 15035

MA’s Pantry has experienced a year of change, growth and challenge. Begun in 1983 by five congregations (of which Saint John’s was a leader), the Pantry was a response to high levels of unemployment in the region as a result of the collapse of heavy industry. Unfortunately and regrettably, the current need is just about as great as it was in 1983. While unemployment has dropped, wages have not kept pace with inflation; many workers are only able to find part-time work; and many of the jobs now available pay below the poverty level and do not come with benefits such as health care. Families (especially single parent families) have been driven into poverty. Nearly half of all families with children in North Versailles are single parent families. This is almost 20% higher than the rate for all of Pennsylvania. Many of MA’s families are elderly, disabled or children, and most of those who are healthy and of working age are employed – often in 2 or 3 jobs. Still, they are unable to make ends meet and are below the poverty line.

At the same time, active membership in the supporting congregations has declined and several congregations have actually disbanded. Thus, while the need continues to be great, the support from the congregations has declined. Fortunately, during 2019 MA’s has received $9,911 from the Pittsburgh Foundation; $1,000 from Walmart; $3,175 in memorial contributions and bequests; $8,250 in Community Development Block Grants from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development; and generous gifts from a number of individuals, several of whom are members of Saint John’s. With these funds and what Saint John’s and the other congregations contribute, we stay afloat. We purchase over 2 tons of food each month in addition to the approximately 1.5 tons of produce that is donated to us monthly by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and all of the food donated by the congregations and the community. One of the community contributions is the annual food collection carried out each May by the US Postal Service in North Versailles and East McKeesport. This amounts to several truck loads and is a major gift.

On other fronts, we have experienced transitions. Several very active volunteers have died and others have been sidelined by serious health problems. Also, the Rev. Alan Thompson of Broadway Alliance Church died in April. At the same time, wonderful new volunteers have identified themselves and have already made themselves very much a part of the operation. Two of the new volunteers made it possible for us to initiate our home delivery for shut-ins, something we have been eager to do for some time. While not a corporate part of MA’s Pantry, the New Life Fellowship (which occupies the former Saint John’s building on Chicora Street) conducted two community-wide food drives for us and has been the source of some wonderful volunteers.

MA’s Pantry is a living, vital, thriving extension of Saint John’s ministry and a partial fulfillment of that part of our Mission statement which says “Saint John’s Lutheran Church exists to … support those in need and to reach out into the community with God’s healing and love.” MA’s Pantry is profoundly grateful to Saint John’s for its prayers, volunteers, and material support.
