Senior Infants 15 th – 19 th June

Hello boys and girls,How are you all doing this week? Can you believe you are now in your second last week of Senior Infants?? I cannot believe I am writing to soon to be first class pupils! I am so proud of you all. 😊 We are starting this week with a very important day! Monday is Luke’s birthday!! Happy birthday Luke! We hope you have a great day celebrating with mammy, daddy and Leo. Don’t forget to eat lots of cake! 😊

I am back with some more fun tasks and activities for you to do at home. This is our last week of formal activities. We are nearly at the end of the school year so keep doing your best like you all have been doing right to the end. You will soon be on your summer holidays! We have some more revision work this week but do not worry if you find anything tricky. I have also included three new videos (Monday and Friday) with me below. I won’t spoil the surprise of what they are about, but one is a reading video, one is a science video and the other is PE. 😉 We also have an extra exciting week as our virtual school tour is on Friday!! Our family sports day will now take place during the final week on Monday 22nd June. Parents, as always, the work below is not obligatory, and it is completely up to you how much you get done. We understand, that as we are getting closer to the end of the year, children are getting tired. It is also harder to get work done with some of the lovely weather lately!! Please do not stress and only do the work that suits you and your family to do. It has been a long road to reach here so thank you again for your support with this online work. Finally, thank you again for the lovely photographs you have sent on to me of the fabulous learning that is happening. There have been photographs of super artwork and creative outdoor learning! I am always so thrilled to see these photographs. If you would like your child’s work to be displayed on the school

It really motivates others and it is important to show off your hard work and the fun you are having. Great job!!I hope all your tasks go well for you this week and have fun!! 😊

Monday 15 th June Gaeilge (This will be revision only):

1. Clothes: I attach a poster with the names of different school clothes below. Please revise these items of clothes with your child. We have covered all these items of clothing in class so there are no new words. You could even turn it into a game and ask your child ‘Show me your bríste, bróga’ etc.

English:1. Reading: To start off our reading this week, I attach another story time

video with myself. I hope the children are enjoying these videos and that it makes them feel a little closer to school. You will need the password Seniors2020 to login. https://vimeo.com/415968565

I also wish to draw your attention again to Twinkl and Story Mentors for additional optional eBooks. The eBooks can be downloaded onto your laptop/device and you will be able to access it offline once it is downloaded. When using Twinkl, search for ebooks and refine the list to Junior/Senior Infants. When using Story Mentors, press the Log in button and then register as a parent. The books are available to download in the resource tab.

2. Word Family Revision: I am attaching 3 short videos we used in class when we were learning about words in the id, ig and ip word families. The children are familiar with these videos and may remember the words and actions we used with them! You could ask your child to think of as many words as they can before watching each of the videos, and then see how many of these words were mentioned in the song. Your child could also put some of these words into sentences or play a game of charades miming the actions of words. You could even practise tracing some of the words on the table with your finger, or, on your partners back. Please do not worry if you cannot watch all the videos.

https://youtu.be/ZLEQFk5k4bE (id words)https://youtu.be/Xufm0Dr2JTs (ig words) https://youtu.be/DtMCCVamCBA (ip words)

3. Spellings: Our spellings will continue to focus on revision of word families and vowel diagraphs covered this year. There are 8 spellings and no dictation sentence this week. Sounding the words out will be helpful to do this. Please complete Monday’s box. (See separate attachment for spelling sheet)

4. Additional optional ue worksheet: Boys and girls, please try your best to do the worksheet below if you wish. This worksheet asks you to find all the ‘ue’ words and colour them in. Can you name all the words that are not ‘ue’ words as well?

If you do not have access to a printer, you could find and write the ‘ue’ words in your copy or on a page instead.

1. Revision: We are going to focus on the concepts of ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ today. Please complete pages 63 and 69 of the big workbook. These pages ask the children to draw more or less items than the number given. We did lots of work on this in class. It is important to emphasise that there is more than one answer to these questions i.e. ‘Draw more than 2 boats’ – any number of boats above 2 is correct.

2. Additional optional oral work activity: If you wish, here is another video with our good friend Jack that revises the number story of 6. https://youtu.be/PIMK8bHoH68

PE-Ireland’s Fittest School: Well done to all the children getting involved in the competition. We are still part of the competition run by School Fitness Ireland to see who the fittest school in Ireland is and the winner gets €1,000 towards sports equipment. As it is Monday, there is no new video. There will be a new video tomorrow at 12 noon. If you are participating, please email the school to let us know as the more children involved the higher chance we have of winning. It is not too late to join this week!! Instead, I include a new Joe Wicks 5-minute body workout you may like to do. I am sure you are getting very good at these! Don’t forget to take a rest if you need to 😊 https://youtu.be/N7CX0_7sLTA

Science: We started learning about the concepts of ‘hot and cold’ last week. The children watched an introductory video and sorted various items into hot or cold using a colouring worksheet. I now attach a video in which I do a short science experiment! What do you think happens when you pour warm water over skittles?? I hope you enjoy! 😊 You will need the password ‘Seniors2020’ to login. https://vimeo.com/418513458

Well done!! You completed Monday’s work!! 😊

Tuesday 16 th June Gaeilge:

English: 1. Reading: (www.oxfordowl.co.uk) The children have made such progress

with their reading this year. We placed such emphasis on reading and the children’s hard work and determination has paid off. I want to take this moment to say that I am so proud of the children’s progress. I want to say thank you to all parents as without you this improvement would not be possible. I am so sorry I did not get to read with the children in more recent months, but I know they have been so well supported at home. Well done to all!!

Please continue reading/discussing an ORT book at your child’s level. You can increase the challenge by asking your child to predict what will happen next at different points throughout the story and by asking them to summarize the mains points of the story at the end. You could also ask your child to put different words from the story into their own sentences.

2. Word Family Revision: I am attaching 3 short videos we used in class when we were learning about words in the ub, ug and un word families. You can use some of the activities mentioned above during Monday’s work to help revise these if you wish. Please do not worry if you cannot watch all three videos.

https://youtu.be/CNPhvp2QoGQ (ub words)https://youtu.be/ByHwuuAsEmo (ug words)https://youtu.be/nCF_zfflsD0 (un words)

3. Spelling: Please complete Tuesday’s box.

4. Handwriting: Please complete page 33 of your big handwriting book (Capital H and small h). Please complete this in pencil and sit all your letters on the blue line. Capital letters also always touch the top red line! I think you will recognise a boy’s name from our class and two girls name from our class! 😊

Maths: 1. Revision: Please complete pages 124 and 125 of the big workbook. This

activity is based on counting and comparing sets. I usually remind the children to double check their work by using ‘careful counting’ so you may wish to do this.

2. Additional optional activity: If you wish, here is another video with our good friend Jack that revises the number story of 5. https://youtu.be/y1oa6o0fMKk

PE: Please continue the Ireland’s Fittest School competition. A new video will be posted by the School Fitness team today at 12pm on the following link https://youtu.be/yz8lfiALyFk or just type School Fitness Ireland into Youtube. In addition, here is another Hi 5 song and dance you might like to do. This is one of the first HI 5 songs that we learned so I will be very impressed if you remember it all! 😉 https://youtu.be/DGbyEl5zPMU

History: We are now approaching the end of the school year. It has been a different school year with many unprecedented challenges. However, the children have continued to learn, grow and make memories.I attach a drawing worksheet below that asks the children to reflect on their favourite memories from this school year. It can be something that happened at school, or, something that happened during this period of distance learning at home. Maybe you enjoyed Aistear, PE or story time? I am sure you also enjoyed this extra time at home where you have been learning by baking, playing and helping around the house. Have fun with this and I am sure you will all draw lovely pictures 😊 You could do this activity orally, or, by drawing pictures on a page at home if this suits more 😊

Wednesday 17 th June Gaeilge (This will be revision only):

1. Deir Ó Grádaigh-Simon Says: I attach a poster with different verbs that we learned throughout the year. Please revise these verbs with your child by playing Simon Says i.e. ‘Deir Ó Grádaigh bígí ag rith, Deir Ó Grádaigh bígí ag léim etc and the children will do the corresponding action. If you do not include ‘Deir Ó Grádaigh’ at the start of the sentence, the children will not do the action. ‘Deir Ó Grádaigh’ is pronounced der-oh-graw-dig!

The children will be familiar with this game as we played it every Friday. The only verb that your child may not know is ‘ag taitneamh’ so please do not worry about this one.

English:1. Reading: As it is Wednesday, I have once again included something a

little different for reading. I attach a link to a read aloud of the story ‘Mouse’s First Summer’. I chose this story as it ties in with our recent learning on the theme of summer. https://youtu.be/HrGzpvjeTQE

2. Word Family Revision: I am attaching 3 short videos we used in class when we were learning about words in the ob, og and op word families. You can revise as many of these word families as you wish. Once again, you can use the different activities mentioned during Mondays’ schedule of work to do this.

Music: Haste to the Wedding’: Listen to the video https://youtu.be/PgvMSYZwT1o How does this song make you feel? (Happy, cheerful, excited etc) Why do you think it makes you feel this way? (It is up-tempo, fast, you can dance to it etc) Secondly, what instruments can you hear in this song? What happens to the music about halfway through the song? Finally, respond to this piece imaginatively through movement-can you show off your best Irish dancing moves?! 😊

Amazing! You completed Wednesday’s work 😊 !!

English: 1. Reading: (www.oxfordowl.co.uk) Please continue reading/discussing an

ORT book at your child’s level for 5-10 minutes. It could be a new book or continue the book you started on Tuesday. You can check your child’s word recognition by picking out random words in the text and asking your child to put those words into their own sentence. You could also look for vowel diagraphs that we had in our spellings recently, or, count how many tricky words you can find.

2. Spellings: Please complete Thursday’s box.

3. Writing: We have recently been focusing on the topic of ‘the cinema’ as part of our oral language work. We will also continue this tomorrow as normal.

On the template below, in your copy or on a page at home, please write 2-3 sentences about a time you went to the cinema. You could draw a picture too if you wish.

The following prompts might be useful.

What film did you see? Who did you go with? Did you have any treats? If so, what kind? Did you like the film? Why/Why not?

Please remember to keep your letters sitting on the line (not dancing in the air!!) and use capital letters and full stops. Good luck! 😊

As this is such a special occasion, it is inspiring our art activity today.I attach a certificate that you can fill in and decorate as a present to give your dad. I will give my dad a present as well. Grandad’s are fathers too so you could keep your certificate to give your grandad when you see him instead if you wish. This is a present so take your time with it and do your neatest colouring. I am sure you will all create the most beautiful and special presents to give on Father’s Day! 😊 If you do not have a printer, you could draw a picture or make a card with paper that you have at home. However, even though we are not in school right now, we can still experience a tour in a different way….We are going on a virtual tour of Dublin Zoo!! This means we can see what is happening in the zoo from our computers. I know you all love the zoo and are looking forward to visiting there in the future. In the meantime, we can enjoy videos of animals that are in the zoo right now as if we were really there!
