Students then read the Come Follow Me, pp.63–67 (NCFM 9.1.4 7-9) and as a class discuss how the New Testament began.

Students compare their stories drawn from family history with the way the New Testament came together.

As a class discuss the following:– What steps were the same or similar?– What was different?– Does your story in some way reveal God’s presence in

human history? – In what way(s) is your story and the way it came

together, ‘inspired’? Today we are going look some of the literacy forms

found in the new Testament. Read CFM pp. 68-69,and discuss key ideas St Paul was the most famous of all who preached the

teachings of Jesus The inspired writings of Paul were gathered into

some of the books known today as the Letters of Paul

There are twenty one letters in the New Testament Discuss the importance of letter writing as a way of

communicating. Talk to students about what it was like before the Internet (before email, instant messaging, and social networking sites). Discuss how letter writing is more than a form of mere

communication. It allows people to leave a little part of themselves in the letters. Watch Lakshmi Pratury: The lost art of letter-writing. And discuss in relation to the legacy that is left behind through letter writing. It is a way of remaining connected, even after the letters stop coming.

Use the video as a way of introducing the letters contained within the New Testament. The letters that were written to different Christian communities are a way for present day Christians to learn about the teachings of Jesus and to remain connected the rich history of Christianity.

Revelation is an example of apocalyptic literature Read CFM, p.74- 76 (NCFM 9.1.5 16-18) and

discuss key ideas. The book of revelation is the last book of the Bible The Book of Revelation teaches Christians that

God’s promise will always be fulfilled and that God’s power will always overcome evil in the world

The Book of Revelation is often wrongly portrayed as a book about the end of the world. It is important that students understand that this is not the case. Instead the Book of Revelation is a source of hope and encouragement particularly in times of trail and sufferings.

Lesson 24- How to read the Bible

Class Prayer- Today we are going look at how to read the bible Read CFM p.80 (NCFM 9.1.6 1-4) and discuss key

ideas as a class The Bible contains a variety of literary forms written

by writers in specific periods of history for particular communities and with certain purposes in mind

Point student to the text in the second paragraph:‘People write what is important to them in different ways. Some write in prose, others in poetry, songs, drama and letters.’Discuss this point with the students.Key questions may include:

Students (know and understand) that Jesus is the Suffering Servant prophesied in Isaiah

Name a song, poem, letter, play, etc that has stood out for them.

What other methods of communication are used in the 21st century? Are all as effective as each other? Justify.

If you had to communicate something important to others, what form would you use and why?

(Justifications should consider the following points covered in the text: ‘Why am I writing this?’ ‘For whom am I writing?’ ‘How will my writing be used?’ and ‘What is the best way of writing this so that people will understand?’ p. 80)

LITERARY FORMSRead CFM p.81 (NCFM 9.1.6 1-4) and discuss key ideas.Ensure that students understand that the Sacred Authors did not intend people to take every detail in their writings as exact historical fact. Therefore, Catholics are not obliged to take literally every detail contained in the Bible. This is not to say that the Bible is without factual material; it actually contains a great many facts.

Ancient historians often used historical figures and events in ways that best illustrated the lessons they wanted to teach. They selected and reorganised events to suit their purposes, frequently expressing these truths in the form of a story. Other symbolic representations were used to convey truths about God, these included used stories, poems, myths, wise sayings, and so on.

NARRATIVE / STORYSummarise key points NCFM pp.5-16 and discuss key ideas.

The Catholic Church believes that the Bible should be read with an understanding that the Sacred Authors did not intent people to take every details in their writings as exact historical fact

The prime concern of the authors was to convey to the people the truth they knew about God

Important teachings were recorded in biblical stories

The Bible begins with six important stories The first story is the Priestly creation account There are five Yahwist stories

The most important truth revealed by God is the reality of his love communicated to us in the person of Jesus Christ

Jesus is the Son of God

Christ offers people the guidance and strength needed to draw closer to God.

The prophets of the Old Testament prophesied the coming of a Messiah

God inspired Isaiah to prophesise the coming of the Messiah

Create a list of key words and phrases from the text that relate to the Christian belief that Jesus is the Messiah (e.g. deliverance, true and lasting happiness, ‘set free’).

In small groups, students brainstorm anything they can recall that is associated with the word ‘messiah.’ It may be necessary to prompt the students’ thinking with words and phrases such as ‘king’ and ‘mighty ruler’. Help students recall that Messiah means ‘Anointed one’ (covered in Year 7 and 8).

The Communion of Saints: Catholics believe that they are linked in a special way with the saints – those who have already died and are now with God. The Communion of Saints is another way of describing the Church which is made up of those in heaven, those who are being purified before seeing God face to face, and those who are journeying towards God on earth. This link explains the ancient practice of praying to the saints for help and inspiration and also praying for the dead that they too may be with God forever. The idea of a communion of those living and those who are with God is beautifully expressed in many prayers that speak of

those who have died being met or greeted by the saints as a mark of their entry into eternal life with God.

– an acrostic, ie. finding a word or phrase for each of the letters in the word ‘salvation’ which, read together, captures the essence of the concept that Jesus has saved and continues to save all people from the forces of evil– a poem or song that proclaims Jesus the Saviour – the one who saves – a poster with a catchy title and other information encouraging people to get to know Jesus as the one who saves.
