Question: What is the difference in your heart rate when walking, speed walking and running?

Materials: Stopwatch, wrist watch

Hypothesis: The heart rate will speed up as the rate of speed of the body speeds up.

-Variables-

Constants: The timer is always set for 60 seconds

Independent: Comparing your heart rate when you are walking at a steady pace, speed walking and running.

Dependent: Observing how many heartbeats per minute the heart produces when the body is steadily sped up.

Procedure: First, gather up your stopwatch and wrist watch. Then, make sure you are in a wide enough space to walk/run around comfortably. Set your stopwatch for 60 seconds. Start the stopwatch and start walking around your open space until time runs out. When time is up, be conscious about your breathing pattern. Use the wrist watch to count your pulse per minute.

Repeat the steps for speed walking and running. Document your results.

Results:

Conclusion: From the data shown, the heart rate speeds up as the body speeds up. The experiment proved my hypothesis was correct. I was already aware that the heart’s rate of speed gets higher as the speed of the body gets higher. As the body speeds up, the heart speeds up to pump extra oxygen to the muscles.
