Discipleship ManualIntroduction by the author: This booklet was written especially to help pastors disciple men for leadership in house churches. It is designed to either be used as a separate booklet to disciple new Christians, individuals, or small groups of 6 to 12 people. We also expect to add this to our primary BGL Seminar Manual, called Hope of the World. Dr. P. R. Sane helped me write that manual, in 2006. It includes what we considered minimum knowledge needed to teach men to plant and pastor house churches in India. BGL has sponsored 51 seminars since then, with an average of more than 100 men per seminar. God used graduates of our seminars to plant more than 3,000 house churches in India

However, Dr. Sane and I have both realized our Hope of the World seminar manual needed more help for pastors in personally discipling leaders. We suggest you still teach the knowledge in the seminar manual, but for best results we hope pastors will disciple men individually or in small groups using this Discipleship supplement. Challenge the men you disciple to disciple their wives, families and other individuals. We believe this will be far more effective than just teaching the content of the seminar manual. May God bless you. –DBM

Acknowledgments: I am indebted to Dr. Charles Lawless, vice president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, using some of his thoughts in a sermon he preached recently on Discipling men like Jesus and Paul did it.

I am also indebted to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for Discipling Devotionals in Section III, paraphrased from THIRTY DISCIPLESHIP EXERCISES by Charlie Riggs, Director of Counseling and Follow-Up for Billy Graham Evangelistic Association from 1957 to 1989. I. A Great Example in Discipling Men

Dr. P. R. Sane, founder of Barnabas Global Links in India, has been doing full-time evangelistic ministry in India for more than 20 years. Before I made my first India trip in 2002, Dr. Sane had made evangelistic trips to at least ten states of India. He always took several young men with him and discipled them. He lived with them, teaching them by his Godly life and the Bible on the journey, praying with them, teaching them to win the lost, preach the gospel, follow up converts in Bible studies on assurance and basic Bible doctrine, baptizing many converts, with his disciples also evangelizing.

Did they face persecution? Of course. Paul said, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). Dr. Sane and his young men were stoned on three separate occasions. He taught them how to face persecution and endure faithfully. One problem; Dr. Sane did not plant any new churches in those early years before 2002.

When I came to India in 2002, Dr. Sane told me his story. I said, why didn’t you plant any churches? He answered, if I planted any churches I would have to stay and be their pastor. There were no qualified pastors available. God called me to be a traveling evangelist to reach India for Christ. I couldn’t do that and be a local pastor.

Much of my career had been church planting in America. That year I shared with Dr. Sane some of the lessons I had learned about church planting. Before I came back to India the next year, God had used him to lead some of the men he had discipled to plant three churches. Most of those men he discipled have gone on to plant churches, some many churches. Thank God for calling Dr. Sane to reach India for Christ!

Dr. Sane begged me to come and help him train pastors to plant churches. The rest is history as God has led us to work together every year since 2002 training pastors to plant churches. This has included the prayers, financial support of many American friends, pastors, churches, and the founding of Barnabas Global Link, Inc. in America in 2008. It is led by a six-man-board, assisted by an Advisory Committee of ten to help raise funds for this ministry.

I share this story here because Dr. Sane is the best modern example I know of for discipling men to plant churches following the example of Jesus and Paul.

II. Discipleship Principles from Jesus and Paul1. Pray, asking God to lead you before choosing who to disciple for leadership.

Jesus: Luke 6:12-13, Now it came to pass in those days that He (Jesus) went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles.

Paul: Acts 16:1-3, Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.

Neither Jesus nor Paul tried to disciple the multitude. They prayed and chose those God was calling to disciple.

2. Spend much time with the few you are discipling. Be in their home. Have them in your home. Take them with you in your ministry. The most effective discipling is showing them by a Godly life what it means to be a true follower of Jesus.

Jesus, Luke 9:18: And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him.

Jesus, Luke 11:1: Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray,

They were close enough to see His prayer life even when He was praying alone. They apparently observed that prayer was the most important thing He did and wanted to learn how to pray. It is remarkable that there is no record of His disciples asking Jesus to teach them to do anything else but pray. Most of the discipling of Jesus was spent with them showing them how to be a disciple by his example and teaching on the go

Paul, 1 Corinthians 11:1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

Be very careful that you live out what you preach. (See also Hebrews 13:7)

2

Page 4:   · Web viewProverbs 22:4 For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the LORD. "But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit,

Paul, 2 Timothy 3:10-11 (Discipling Timothy), But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra--what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me.

Timothy went with Paul on his missionary journeys. Paul lists all the things Timothy learned from watching Him.

3. Give them something to do.

Paul, 2 Timothy 2:15: Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Assign them Scripture to read daily and suggest verses to memorize. (Section III will suggest daily devotional Scripture, including verses to memorize). Ask them to call you on their cell phone sharing what they learned.

Jesus, Luke 9:1-2: Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Jesus sent them out to witness without Him, but not only the 12 disciples. In Luke 10:1 Jesus sent 70 others out to villages to preach and heal.

4. Prepare them for faith struggles and suffering.

Jesus – Luke 18:1: Then He spoke a parable to them that men always ought to pray and not lose heart. They would be tempted to lose heart, meaning to give up. Prayer asking God to help them would keep them from giving up.

Jesus –Luke 22:31-32: And the Lord said, ‘Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat, But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.’

Satan will attack you but be encouraged. Jesus is praying for you (Romans 8:34 and Hebrews 7:25).

5. Do not work alone. Always take someone with you to disciple.

Jesus-Luke 10:1: After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.

Jesus always sent His disciples out two by two or more. This is for many reasons, (1) Pastor or mature Christians should take less mature Christians to disciple them, (2) the law required at least two witnesses to confirm truth (3) To be accountable to each other, (4) As prayer partners to pray for one another and encourage one another, and (5) safety, from physical harm and also from being misrepresented by adversaries.

Philippians 2:5-8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

*Tips for leaders: This last Section III, Discipling Devotionals, pages 4 to 23 includes follow-up devotions for people who made decisions in Billy Graham Crusades. They can be used to disciple one new Christian or a small group of 6 to 12 people. This is a good way to get new Christians into the Bible and practicing daily devotionals. Each devotional can be done in 15 minutes...

Whether it is used to disciple one individual or asmall group, each participant agrees to do one devotion per day. Encourage them to spend some time in prayer.

Have one meeting per week with the individual or the discovery group. The first meeting you get acquainted, and do lesson 1, explaining how to do the devotional lesson. Each meeting should take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The purpose of each lesson and verse study is to discover what God’s Word says, to understand what it means and to apply it to life.

It should primarily be a discussion. The leader should aim at talking much less and the group members talking more. Prepare questions about the lessons to ask to stimulate discussion.

Each lesson has a different topic and has six verses about that topic. Each day there is a memory verse suggested.

The first 8 topics are: 1. Salvation, 2. Assurance, 3. Lordship of Jesus, 4. The Bible, 5. Prayer, 6. The Holy Spirit, 7. Witnessing to others, 8. Jesus Christ and twelve more devotional topics.

There are 20 devotionals in this manual. It is suggested that some type of daily devotional plan be secured to help the participants continue a daily devotional life. I Suggest 4 Group meetings.
