Advertising vs Propaganda Advertising is producing advertisements for products. Propaganda is to promote a political cause or a point of view to get an idea across. The difference between advertising and propaganda is advertising is to sell or advertise a product, goods or service, which is also factual. Propaganda is an opinion to get an idea across. In these 2 posters one advertising which is selling a product and one propaganda which is a point of view. The advertisement is of a knife showing you how it can cut through the carrot and the board. This shows how good the product is and is trying to convince you to buy it. Whereas the propaganda poster with the statement ‘Together We Can Do It‘ is telling that you should help, this is a point of view to get you to join.

Advertising:

Through these 2 advertisements they are both advertising a service to promote why you should choose that service. The McDonalds Campaign is promoting McDonalds free Wi-Fi buy utilising the McDonalds fries is the position as the Wi-Fi symbol. McDonalds is promoting their Wi-Fi to encourage customers to come to their stores. The use of the iconic McDonalds fries in the shape of the well-known Wi-Fi is symbolic to today’s generation. The use of bright red negative space is used effectively to make the yellow fries stand out. The red and yellow colours are the symbolic McDonalds colours this is therefore advertising their company buy simple colours and shapes.

The Ecovia advertisement is promoting their company by the campaign Stop the Violence, Don’t Drink and Drive. This is done by using people as ‘cars’ to give the impact of violence on the road like people are causing violence to each other. The hand punching the face with the detailed cars drawn on both the hand and face is to resemble the violence of drink driving and what it is doing to people. The company Ecovia which is car rental uses this advertisement so when people do drink and drive they may get into a car accident so a car rental may be needed.

Propaganda

i

These propaganda posters are to convey an idea and or opinion. 1942’s He’s Coming South poster is referring to the threat of the Japanese invasion. On this poster, there is a Japanese solider with the imperial Japanese flag behind him striding across the globe heading towards Australia. The posters ‘he’s coming south. It’s fight, work or perish’ slogan is aiming at Australian citizens to get them to fight for their country against Japan. The idea is to get Australians fighting against Japan for their land and not for Japan to invade and take over Australia.

One of the most recognisable propaganda posters of all time the I Want You, 1917 J. M. Flagg's poster which was based on the original British Lord Kitchener poster. This poster was used to recruit soldiers for World War I and World War II. Flagg used his own face for Uncle Sam which is the illustrated man on the poster. This poster is propaganda because it is used to get an idea across which is to get people to recruit for the U.S. The powerful use of ‘you’ used in the poster is to the attention of people to join the recruiting station saying that they want you the person who is reading the poster to join.

The difference between the propaganda poster and the advertisement is that the We Can Do It poster is not selling anything to the viewer it is only selling the idea of women can participate in the war like men which is an idea and opinion. The pedigree advertisement is selling animals that are up for adopt and persuading you to adopt because animals make people happier which was what the advertisement was trying to convey.

Thumbnails

The success and failures of these thumbnails is that some are leaned to either more advertisements or propaganda. There is not really any other ideas as was heavily focused on the more horror movie style of the propaganda advertisement. More detail and description was needed as

well. Some success through the thumbnails was getting the message across and using propaganda to help with the styles of thumbnails.
