Inspector George Gently: Gently EvilSunday,19 June 2011 New Series

Martin Shaw returns for series three as the classic unsung hero detective in Inspector George Gently, with two feature-length films written by Peter Flannery (The Devil's Whore, Our Friends In The North) and Jimmy Gardner (The Cops, This Life).

With his sidekick, the un-pc and undisciplined Detective Sergeant John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby), they make the perfect police partnership.

In episode one Gently Evil, a young woman is found murdered in a sleepy coastal village and Inspector George Gently (Martin Shaw) and Sergeant John Bacchus find themselves investigating a family with unimaginable secrets.

Initially it appears that the woman's estranged husband Alan Charlton (Daniel Cassey), and father of their enigmatic daughter Agnes (Natalie Garner), is responsible for the killing - but then suspicion turns to the child's uncle Darren Paige (Shaun Dooley).

With their work already cut out for them, the investigation is seriously damaged when rogue reporter Max Osgood (Paul Kaye), desperate to get an exclusive story on the family, poses as a child care advocate to get access to the child's grandmother.

Meanwhile, Bacchus is having marriage problems and becomes jealous when he realises how close Gently has become to his wife Lisa (Melanie Clark Pullen) and toddler Leigh-Ann.

But as Gently and Bacchus investigate further into the disturbed family they discover a far more alarming truth.

The Young OnesTuesday,21 June 2011

What if it were possible to turn back time? Could it be that we all have the power to think ourselves young again? That's the extraordinary claim of an experiment first conducted 30 years ago which the BBC is now re-staging.

Six well loved celebrities in their 70s and 80s - Liz Smith, Lionel Blair, Dickie Bird, Sylvia Syms, Derek Jameson and Kenneth Kendall - have agreed to spend one week living as though it were their heyday, 1975, to see if re-living your youth can make you young again.

Their country retreat has been lovingly restored to be an authentic 1970s home, but it's not just the house that's had a '70s makeover. The celebrities will be wearing the clothes of the 1970s, they'll be cooking the favourite dishes of the time and their pastimes will include 70s TV, 70s video games and favourite LPs from the decade. Overseeing the experiment will be the BBC's man of science, Dr Michael Mosley, and Harvard Professor Ellen Langer, who conducted the original experiment.

In episode two, each of the celebrity volunteers must come face to face with the lives they led in their heyday and take back control of their lives. For Dickie a trip to Lord's cricket ground brings the man he used to be back to life while Liz takes up painting again.

Artscape: Annie Liebovitz In Conversation With Virginia TrioliTuesday,21 June 2011

In Conversation with Virginia Trioli features revealing, in-depth interviews with icons of the arts.

In this week's revealing interview, Trioli chats with world renowned photographer and chronicler of our times, Annie Leibovitz. Through Leibovitz's iconic imagery, the program tracks her incredible journey, from her beginnings as an art student in San Francisco during the 1960s, through her lifelong partnership with the acclaimed intellectual and writer Susan Sontag, right through to her status today as one of the most sought after celebrity portrait photographers.

On TrialThursday,23 June 2011

*Please note: An appeal of the Evans trial is pending, due to be heard on May 24, 2011. If the Court of Appeal orders a re-trial, the ABC may exercise its discretion not to broadcast Episodes 3 and 4 of the series in Western Australia and publishers should seek independent advice regarding publication of the trial details.

The murder trial into the brutal killing of Alana Dakin continues and the defence case begins. Will they convince the jury that Anthony Evans was of unsound mind at the time of the murder, or that he was somehow provoked?

Prominent Melbourne psychiatrist Lester Walton appears as the key witness for the defence and he gives an account of Anthony's history of mental illness. As a result of the pressure he's under, Anthony has a breakdown and the court is suddenly adjourned. The trial resumes after Anthony recovers, then Senior Western Australian psychiatrist Dr Vicki Pascu also gives psychiatric evidence in support of the defence. Cross-examination by the prosecutor Paul Yovich fails to make any real inroads into the defence case. The prosecution then introduces their psychiatric expert Dr Adam Brett, to argue Anthony was completely sane at the time of the murder.

The jury is presented with polarised expert opinions on what constitutes 'mad' or psychotic behaviour. In their closing address, the Crown and the defence then summarise the story to the jury. Judge McKechnie also gives his final address - highly sensitive to the fact that the last trial was appealed due to a number of mistakes made by the previous trial Judge. While the jury is out, the defence and prosecution teams try to second guess what the jurors are thinking. Finally the jury returns, but there’s a twist that takes everyone by surprise.

Baker Boys: Inside The SurgeThursday,23 June 2011

Veteran combat photographer Jon Steele has returned to Iraq with Baker Company, a select group of Army soldiers who purposely enter an Al Qaeda stronghold on a counterinsurgency mission for the last three months of their tour of duty.

Baker Boys: Inside the Surge is a close-up and honest depiction of what the war looks like from the ground. Steele is the cameraman and narrator who interviews the members of Baker Company both in the war zone and when they return home to the U.S.

The documentary bears witness to the physical and emotional cost paid by American soldiers who, after years of fighting to win the war in Iraq, are now cast into an unfamiliar and unsettling role of winning the peace with non-traditional weapons; talking, trust building, and cash.

Baker Boys: Inside the Surge is extremely powerful. Viewers will be deeply moved by these soldiers and the stories that they tell in their own words.

As the Baker Boys' deployment enters its final month the focus starts to shift from the mission at hand to making it out of Iraq alive.

The Army completes construction of a bridge and hands over the bridge security detail to the Shiite dominated Iraqi Army, the first major test of the Americans’ exit strategy.

Ethnic tensions between Sunni villagers and the Shiite army are high and the Baker Boys wonder whether the progress of the past few months will disappear if centuries-old clashes flare up again.

Taggart: Fallen AngelsFriday,24 June 2011

DCI Matt Burke (Alex Norton), DS Jackie Reid (Blythe Duff) and DI Robbie Ross (John Michie) are called out to a block of flats after a uniform PC stumbles upon a deeply shocking scene. Tucked under their sheets, three children are found lying dead in their bedroom, whilst another is fighting for his life. The discovery is more disturbing still when the children's father is found hanged in the bathroom.

Diagnosed as clinically depressed, Pete Ferguson, the children's father, is the primary suspect believed to have killed his children and then himself. However, with no witnesses and surviving child Callum unconscious in hospital, Burke and the team are adamant they will get to the bottom of who is to blame for the horrendous deaths.

Duncan Clark (Davood Ghadmi) reveals from his forensic examinations that Pete's death preceded the children. With Pete eliminated as a suspect, the team must find a new lead to take them to the murderer.

Investigations get underway, but once Callum wakes up from his hospital bed, alongside his devastated mother Louise (Neve McIntosh), the whole story becomes more sinister and takes a sickening twist...

Meanwhile, after years of being a slave to her job, Jackie contemplates her future.

The team is low on funds, and needs a new mark. When an acquaintance tells them about Clarissa Bartwell, who makes a living hosting charity events and pocketing a large part of the proceeds, they spring into action.

Clarissa has a passion for fashion. She buys all the latest trends and is desperate to get her hands on the most exclusive designer items, so the gang decides that the way to work this woman is to make her want what she can't have.

With the story of the 'Emperor's New Clothes' as inspiration, a cat-and-mouse game ensues, with Clarissa believing she is hot on the trail of celebrated new designer, Lorde. He's urban, he's cool… he's Billy (Ashley Walters) in disguise. But Clarissa is just desperate to invest in this bright young thing.

For Billy, the stakes are high - this is the first time he's been allowed to play 'on the inside'. So when an old friend threatens to tell the gang more than Billy is willing to reveal unless he gets 20,000 pounds, Billy feels the pressure.

Though Clarissa is primed, Billy has trouble holding it together when he and Danny (Marc Warren) are confronted by her hard-nosed, unsentimental business partner, Reece. If this is the 'Emperor's New Clothes', will Reece be the one to point out that Lorde's designs are worthless? And if that happens, can Danny finally come up with a plan B?

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is curing what ails you with an episode featuring the latest inventions to make us healthier and happier. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, engineer James Bradfield Moody, and surgeon and inventor Professor Fiona Wood.Inventions featured on the program:

TEKS – by inventor Alan Maynard from SA

Isokinetic exercise uses a specialised apparatus that creates variable resistance to movement, so no matter how much effort you exert, movement continues at a constant speed. This kind of exercise is used to improve muscular strength and endurance, especially after injury. The problem is, the machines required for this are so expensive that they’re usually only found in hospitals and universities, beyond the reach of ordinary physiotherapists.

Teks is a high speed isokinetic training system for both elite athletes and rehab patients. The invention uses a unique hydraulic system that is much cheaper than existing isokinetic systems. Teks also allows for much faster exercise, so both rehabilitation patients and elite athletes can increase the speed and power of their musculature. The system is already being used by athletes in a number of different elite sports.

TRUEFIT – by inventor Collin Anderson from NSW

Fifteen years ago Collin was diagnosed with sleep apnoea. While such a diagnosis would trouble many, Collin felt greatly relieved. He thought that now he knew what was wrong with him there would be a way to treat it. But when he tried the masks commonly used to treat the condition he found them so uncomfortable and annoying, the thought of wearing them the rest of his life drove him into the shed to think of something better.

He spent the next nine years using his engineering skills to realise his vision of a sleep apnoea mask that is tailored to fit the user. TrueFIT is a personally moulded, leak-proof, quiet and comfortable sleep apnoea treatment mask that will stay in place, no matter what position you choose to sleep in.

SELF-FITTED HEARING AID – by inventors Peter Blamey and Daniel Taft from VIC

One in every six Australians suffers from hearing loss, yet 80% of the people who could benefit from a hearing aid don’t have one. A hearing aid comes with the cost of having an audiologist tune it for your own ear, and the initial cost alone is often $10,000.

The Self-Fitted Hearing Aid couples a hearing aid with a unique system of filtering sound, along with newly developed software that allows a user to easily adjust levels to their most optimal level from the comfort of their own home, without the need for expensive audiologist consultations. This technology could make a huge impact in improving the hearing of people who have previously been excluded from easy and affordable access to better hearing.

CatalystPremenstrual SyndromeFor such a common and frustrating condition, surprisingly little research has been done on premenstrual syndrome. But as Jonica Newby reports, a recent discovery has recognised that the monthly fall in progesterone levels during menstruation are accompanied by a rise in the mood changing hormone - allopregnanolone. The discovery has led to a new way of taming the monthly monster - by the controlled administering of a commonly prescribed antidepressant.

Using motion tracking, an infra-red camera, a microphone array and facial recognition software, Microsoft's KINECT platform allows users to control the game with body movements even to the point of having your avatar replicate facial expressions. It is just a part of the much bigger picture of how we will be interfacing with our computers in the future.
