Can you draw your favourite sandwich? Draw from first hand observation (you could make the sandwich for lunch and draw it before you eat it all!) ...

Or second hand observation (find an image on your phone or computer).

Challenge; Can you make an interesting composition and include a background? Maybe the sandwich has been bitten into? Maybe an animal is having a bite? Maybe it is decaying and has insects crawling over it? Maybe it has been left on a beach or sticking out of a bin? Maybe it is the tallest double whopper of a sandwich with

loads of fillings all layered on top of eachother? Maybe someone has it at their mouth about to take a bite? Be creative as you like!

3. 3D Paper dinner sculpture.

PaperOptional;Glue, scissors, cellotape, colours.

Using sculptural paper techniques; can you make a plate of food using paper? Fold, scrunch, construct, layer, curl, twist, tear, cut and overlap paper to make a 3D sculptural meal of your choice.

Can you photograph your results?

E.g Fish, chips and peas – scrunch and roll small paper pieces for the peas, fold paper or twist to make your chips, and shape paper to make your fish. Place on a cut out plate with knife and fork.

4. Balance. Food objects observational drawing.

Paper Drawing PencilColoured materials if available.

Draw an arrangement of food objects considering the following; The balance of your composition, think about the grouping and arrangement of the objects, overlapping, using the full space of your page, selecting different heights and shapes.

Try and make your food objects appear 3d using a range of tones, shadows and highlights. If you have coloured pencils, blend colours together to create a greater range.

5. Wayne Thiebaud Artist research.

Internet and Word document or Powerpoint orPaperPencil.Optional; Coloured materials, e.g pencils, paints.

Look at the work of artist Wayne Thiebaud. Can you write an analysis of his work.

E.g Describe the subject matter and content. What techniques did he use?Write down some key words that apply to his work; e.g repetition, arrangement, unity, balance. Can you put them into sentences about his work? Can you describe the formal elements? Line, Shape, Form, Tone, Texture, Colour.

What do you like about the work? Offer an opinion.

Present your research and analysis in an exciting, creative way. Add images which are either drawn, printed or pasted (if done on a computer.)

6. Artist personal response

Use any materials you have available. Pencil, photography, collage...

E.g if it is a coloured painting and you only have pencils, that is absolutely fine. But feel free to be creative and try and use the most appropriate medium.

Can you produce your own work inspired by an artist of your choice who used food as their theme. This can be made with any material to hand, 2D or 3D. Be as creative as you wish and are allowed! It could be a sculpture, a photograph, a photo-shopped picture, collage, digital art, pencil drawing, painting, even food items, tea/ coffee to make a ‘paint’ and paint shapes and tones.

Loads more examples online, look at Pintrest to be inspired.

7. Observational Drawing – Out the window

Many artists have been inspired by windows and what they see looking out that space. Pick a window in your home and draw the interior and exterior from observation.

You may wish to include more of the interior room (curtains, the window frame, nearby furniture) or more of the exterior out of the window (sky, roof tops, a tree, fencing, windows opposite, a garden, road

etc.) or a balance of both.

Use a range of tones and try and make it appear 3 dimensional by looking carefully at the angles and think about perspective.

8. Artist Comparison.

InternetPaper or Word document / Powerpoint.

Produce a Venn Diagram or be creative in your presentation, to compare the following two artworks;

1) The Human Condition, 1933 by Rene Magritte

2) Open Window, Collioure, 1905 by Henri Matisse.

Consider the formal elements; Line, Shape, Form, Tone, Texture, Colour. The content, subject matter, style, material, feel, meanings, realism... look for differences in both paintings and similarities.
