3D printing your own Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Adapter

With the introduction of the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, a new Surface Dock is now available and the current Surface Pro 3 Docking Station will be discontinued as the new Surface Dock is also compatible with Surface Pro 3.

This new Surface Dock instantly transforms your ultraportable Surface into a desktop PC. Simply plug in the SurfaceConnectTM cable to charge your device and access external monitors, a keyboard, mouse, and more.

Specifically, the Surface Dock: Works with Surface Book, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Pro 3 5.12" x 2.36" x 1.18" (130mm x 60mm x 30mm) 1.21lbs. (550 grams) 2 Mini DisplayPorts 1 Gigabit Ethernet port 4 USB 3.0 ports 1 Audio out port SurfaceConnect™ cable External power supply 1-year limited hardware warranty

If you decide that you don’t want to purchase the new Surface Dock, but instead use your existing Surface Pro 3 Docking Station with your new Surface Pro 4 (which has changed dimensions), we have made available an adapter that attaches to your Surface Pro 3 Docking Station so your Surface Pro 4 can snugly hold your new Surface Pro 4. You can get this adapter at no charge (plus shipping and handling) through the Microsoft Stores, through Microsoft’s Customer Support, or through your commercial reseller.

However, if you don’t want to wait for this to be shipped to you or you want to avoid the shipping and handling, you can print out your own adapter with a 3D printer.

Please note that the quality of the 3D printing will depend on the printer used to make these and your 3D printer must be able to accommodate a build volume of 10.3mm x 100.8mm x 285.4 mm.

The Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Adapter is available in two different file formats, .STP and .STL. Please choose the format best suited for your 3D printer at www.surface.com/dockingstationadapter

Once your Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Adapter has been printed, please place two pieces of double-sided tape into the indents on the back of the Adapter. The size of the tape should be approximately 3/8” x 3/4”, or 9mm x 18mm.

Secure the Adapter to the Surface Pro 3 Docking Station as outlined in the 4 steps below.

Your new Surface Pro 4 should fit snugly into your Surface Pro 3 Docking Station after carefully pulling the sides of the Docking Station to the center to secure your Surface Pro 4.
