Song and Chant List

Songs

1. The Moss O’ Burreldalea. Dorianb. Jump Right In, Book 2, p.18c. 1-3 graded. This piece focuses on helping the students learn about continuous flow. This helps

them to feel the time in between the beat. It also helps develop the students’ locomotor skills. This also gives the students the ability to be creative with their dance moves.

2. Donkeys Love Carrotsa. Majorb. Jump Right In, Book 2, p.36c. 1-2 graded. This is a good piece to work on micro and macro beat. I would have the class tap the

microbeat and half the class tap the macrobeat. It would also be a good way to introduce dotted rhythms at a very basic level.

3. Cretan Dances: Pentozalisa. Aeolianb. Jump Right In, Book 2, p.58c. 2-3 graded. This would be a great piece to have the students listen to an Aeolian piece and be

exposed to a piece from Greece. The piece also revisits our dotted eighth sixteenth rhythm.

4. The Ardelean Woman a. Harmonic Minor

Page 2: kelseywellstrombone.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewPentatonic. Jump Right In, Book 1, pg. 234. 3rd -4th grade. I would use this piece to help reinforce the pentatonic scale.

b. Jump Right In, Book 4, p.40c. 4-5 graded. This is a good song for the students to start identifying form. This piece specifically

has two major parts. The third phrase is a little tricky because the rhythm is different.

5. Paddy Works on the Railroada. Aeolianb. Jump Right In, Book 4, p.166c. 4-5 graded. This is exposes the students to 6/8 meter. You could have students use the hand

drums to play the micro and macro beats. This will help show how the long beats and short beats work in 6/8

6. Alouettea. Majorb. Jump Right In, Book 4, p.112c. 4-5 graded. This song will be good for exposure to other nationalities. This song is French-

Canadian and is written in French. It will be good experience for the kids to sing something outside of English.

7. Pass the Shoea. Majorb. mysongfile.com c. 1-2 graded. This is a good piece to play a game with. As the students pass a shoe around, make

sure it is to the macrobeat. When it lands on a student, have them sing a tonal pattern back to you.

e.8. The Song of the Pirates

a. Phrygianb. Jump Right In, Book 1, pg. 20c. 1st – 2nd graded. I would this piece to help teach Phrygian tonality. I would incorporate movement so

they could “feel” how tonality changes music.

9. The Fair Young Child a. Melodic minorb. Jump Right In, Book 1, pg. 140c. 4th – 5th graded. I would use this piece to help teach the difference in kinds of minor. The song would

be a sound reference while having the scale on the board.10. Walk Along, John

a. Pentatonicb. Jump Right In, Book 1, pg. 234c. 3rd -4th graded. I would use this piece to help reinforce the pentatonic scale. I would use barred

instruments to have the students play the melody.11. My Song 1

a. Mixolydianb. Attachedc. 5th graded. The students being in fifth grade will already be accustomed to mixolydian. They will

each have a copy of the song and it will be their responsibility to fill in all the “normal” solfege. As a class, we will go over the altered solfege.

12. My Song 2a. Aeolianb. Attachedc. 2nd – 3rd graded. The students will first listen to my song. The will go through the MLT steps and then

attempt to sing the song on bum.

Chants

1. Had a Little Thoughta. Usual dupleb. Jump Right In, Book 4, p.104c. K-1 graded. This would be a great song to introduce rhythm and rhythm syllables. It addresses

how there are no pitches involved. The song also talks about where to put the specific syllables.

2. Chop, Chop, Chippity Chopa. Usual dupleb. Mysongfile.comc. Kindergarten

d. I will have the students pat the macro beats on their laps to help them learn 6/8 better. I will also have the children pick a vegetable to put in the pot at the end of the song.

e.3. The Noble Duke of York

a. Usual dupleb. Jump Right In, Book 1, pg. 18c. 1st graded. This chant can be used to teach micro and macro beats. I would have the students

do both the micro and macro beat at the same time as opposed to separate so they can see how the two connect.

4. Grandma Bear From Delawarea. Multimetric (usual duple, usual triple)b. Jump Right In, Book 1, pg.198c. 1st – 2nd graded. Since this chant displays two different meters, I will sing the chant to the students

and have them raise their hands when they hear it change.5. Peas

a. Usual Tripleb. Jump Right In, Book K, pg. 14c. 1st

d. After singing the piece on bum and then syllables. I would have the students listen and then audiate. They will then perform it on bum and then move to syllables.

6. The Squirrela. Unusual Paired b. Jump Right In, Book K, pg. 52c. 1st graded. This song will give the students a chance to warm their ears up to unusual paired

time. I will have the students move like the squirrel by obeying the songs instructions.

7. My Chant 1a. Duple meterb. Attachedc. 4th-5th gradersd. In groups, the students will be given a copy of the chant. As a team they must work

together to assign the correct rhythmic syllables to the chant.8. My Chant 2

a. Unusual pairedb. Attachedc. 1st graded. Students, as a class, will try to keep the macro beat. They will pat it on their laps.
