Suffolk West Remembers On the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month 1918, the guns fell silent and the First World War drew to a close. Following on from the wonderful event at The Great War Huts earlier this year, the Board of Trustees has decided to mark this momentous day with an exhibition at Park Farm and we’d like your help please. Would each WI please ask their members if they have a few small items, only two or three per WI, as we do not have the room for too many, which they could loan to us for this exhibition? It could be anything, photos, a letter, a medal, a commendation, an item of clothing, anything which relates to the years between 1914 and 1918, we can photocopy any letters or documents if you would rather not leave the originals. We may have room for a couple of larger items. If you do not have objects but want to write someone’s story, that will be most welcome. We would also like to recognise those on the home front both at work and at home plus those who served in the Merchant Navy and the animals of war, as they also served. We will also make a Peace Corner to recognise those who were conscientious objectors, so there’s lots of scope. Even if you do not have any items for display, we would like all WIs to make two poppies in felt, crochet or knitting, which will be incorporated into a display by Margaret Brackenbury. Patterns for these can be found by putting ‘make felt or crochet or knitted poppy’ into a search engine on the web. If you have problems finding a pattern, please contact the office and we will send you one. Please would you bring your items to Park Farm no later than Thursday November 1 st so we know what we have to work with in terms of staging and display. Please ring us if you’d like help getting them there. Please ensure that you put your name and WI VERY CLEARLY somewhere on the items, other than the poppies, in the bag they are brought in or tied to the object. We will handle all items with the utmost care and respect and there will be stewards in the building at all times during the display, the building is always kept locked when unoccupied. Please help us to make this a wonderful tribute to all who fought or lived through these years. Please also come along to the exhibition, we will serve you a glass of wine or soft drink to enjoy whilst you view the items. The exhibition will be open on Sunday 11 th November 5pm to 8pm and all day Monday 12 th November between 10am & 8pm. Although we do not need to know who is attending please give us some idea of numbers, approximate times and which day you would like to attend. This exhibition is open to members, husbands, partners and friends, you are all most welcome. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
