Mrs. HouserWeek Three Lesson: You’re an Architect!
Week three Art Activity
March 30-April 3, 2020
Mrs. K. Houser
ArchitectureThe design of buildings and
structures
Before our “break” we were learning about the architecture of Ancient
Greece. We learned about the three schools of architecture based on the
three types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.
This week’s lesson is based on a famous American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.
He lived from 1867-1959. During his lifetime he designed and created over 500 structures, all over the world! You may have been to one: The Guggenheim
Art Museum in NY City.
Guggenheim, 1959He designed it as a round structure with
a continuous spiral on the inside, enabling visitors to view the artworks in
a constant, uninterrupted way.
Unfortunately, Frank Lloyd Write died 6 months before the completion of the
Guggenheim. He never saw the finished building.
One of my favorites is Fallingwater which is South of Pittsburgh in Mill Run,
PA. It was designed and created as a vacation home for a family.
Fallingwater, 1935-1938
This beautiful house was designed as organic architecture – it was built in and
around it’s natural surroundings. A waterfall runs under the home. Trees
were built around, and natural stone was mined from the area.

Your assignment:You’re an Architect! Create your dream house!
First brainstorm a list of building requirements:
What will your building be used for?Who will live there?
What types of rooms are necessary?Number of bedrooms? Bathrooms?
What types of outdoor activities?Where will it be?Anything else?
Now, collect your materials!Paper, pencil, straight edge, coloring
materials (if you choose)
Using the list of requirements, design your home on paper! Draw at least 2
different views.
Optional extension activity #1: draw 2-3 inside rooms
Optional extension activity #2: Build a 3-D structure of your house. Use boxes, paper towel rolls, cardboard, use your
imagination!Optional extension activity #3: Do more research on Frank Lloyd Wright and his
architecture!
