GRADING SCALE (continued)Grades given will based on quizzes, tests, lab reports, projects, classwork, homework, class notes and participation using the following percentages:

50% Tests (Bi-weekly)30% Quizzes (weekly)20% Lab, Projects, Class notes, Homework, Classwork and Participation (daily)

ASSIGNMENTSWork assigned on a daily basis (in class and at home). This work may include online activities and research, worksheets, science article analysis, labs, study time and/or other selected activities. All work must be completed by the due date. One day late, an assignment will be marked 50%. All work assigned must be completed, in order to prepare for the assessments given. NO WORK ACCEPTED FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES. IF A STUDENT IS TARDY TO SCHOOL AND LOCKED OUT, THE ABSENSE IS UNEXCUSED. Work turned in without a name or is not legible will not be graded for points, and will receive a marked of zero. Work may NOT be typed. Please, work must be neatly written in pencil, blue or black ink only. No work is allowed to be done on colored paper or written in a colored pen other than blue or black. A hard copy of all work needs to be turned in unless otherwise stated by the teacher. Please do not turn in assignments via emailed or digitally without prior teacher approval.

All papers need a proper heading on the top right-hand corner of the page, above the first line. In class, students will learn the simple format of a heading to use for all assignments.

** The Media Center is available before and after school for students to use computers and/or to print.

TESTS/QUIZZESExpect a test at the end of each topic/chapter and quizzes after each subtopic/section. Study guides are useful tools to assist students in preparing for the types of questions that will be on each assessment (ex: Kahoot review games, vocabulary flash cards, outline of key concepts from class notes, etc). Test items may include multiple choice, short answer, true or false, matching, identification, critical thinking, essay questions and math problems. Quizzes occur at any time. Quiz announcements are via homework page and in class.

MAKE-UP WORKOnly students with an excused absence can make up work. All unexcused absences will result in a zero for the missed assignment. Tests and quizzes must be made-up by the very next class period that the student arrives back to school, or during extra help in the mornings. Please contact the teacher to schedule make up work. A different test/quiz will be given from the original given in class. It is the student’s responsibility to check the Doral Academy website for any missed work and/or get notes from a classmate. Once the student receives make up work, it is due the following class period. For extended excused absences and/or illnesses, you can receive time equal to the days you were absent to make up work.

Extra HelpExtra help is every Tuesday and Thursday (7:30AM to 8:00AM) in the morning. All students sign in every time when they attend an extra help session.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONSAll students are to adhere to the rules set forth in the Doral Academy Charter Middle School Student Handbook.

Be seated, quiet and ready with all materials on your desk by the time the bell rings. Follow directions the first time given and participate in class. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak. Stay in your assigned seat. The teacher dismisses the students, not the bell. Refrain from chewing gum, eating, or drinking in class (a water bottle is acceptable, but no flipping). Turn off and put away all electronic devices including cell phones. They will be confiscated and sent

to the main office in the Middle School (A-Building)! Use appropriate language and respect everyone and everything in the classroom.

MATERIALSStudents must bring their materials to class every day. If a student needs to borrow a basic item from the teacher (pencil, paper, etc.), it is BEFORE the bell rings (student will not be penalized). Interrupting class after the bell has rung to ask for materials will result in a classroom infraction notice. The following are required and recommended class materials:

REQUIRED 1 or 1 ½ inch three ring durable binder (with pockets)

3 hole punched lined loose-leaf paper 4-5 plastic tab dividers labeled: 1) notes/classwork, 2) quiz/test prep, 3) homework log, and 4) lab and projects Sharpened pencils with erasers (several to be used during the entire year) Blue or Black Pens (at least two) Red pens (at least two) Highlighters (at least two) Whiteout tape

PASSESAll students should plan restroom breaks before or after class. It is rare that a student received permission to leave class, except in the case of an emergency. When a student leaves the class, he or she is required to obtain a yellow pass signed by the teacher. Students with medical issues should take documentation to the guidance department and make sure that the teacher receives notification.

TARDINESSStudents are to be inside the classroom and in their assigned seat when the bell rings. Those that do not are marked tardy. Every three unexcused tardy will result in a detention given at the end of the month. Any pop quizzes missed due to tardiness will not be eligible for makeup. Lockouts take place daily per administration. If a student is not in class when the bell rings, they will be required to report to the cafeteria (lock out). This will result in the student missing the entire class period. The student will receive a “Z” for any tests, quizzes, and assignments or projects given/due that day. No makeup will be allowed.

LAB FEE $10.00 lab fee. http://www.onlinerene.com/fees/search.aspx

PARENT CONFERENCESParent conferences take place immediately after school on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Conferences occur from 3:40 to 4:30PM. No parent/teacher conferences will be held on Mondays or Fridays. Parents must schedule this meeting with the main office. Please know that you can receive up to date information about your child’s grade in this class via the Dade schools parent portal.

give credit or not

If a student is caught plagiarizing an assignment or cheating, they will receive an F grade for that assignment and an F in conduct for the entire nine weeks. This is a school wide science policy. Parents/guardians receive immediately information about this issue. In addition, the student will receive a failure notice to reflect the F in conduct at report card time.

**Teacher reserves the right to make changes to this syllabus at any time**

ALL DONATIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Remember that every donation you make will count toward your parent’s volunteer hours. You need a total of 30 hours per year or a donation totaling $100.00. You earn credit at the rate of 1 hour for every $3.33 spent. Please bring in your receipts to me so that I am able to submit it to the office. Make sure to write the student’s name, ID number, and class period on the receipt. See teacher’s wish list on the school website, under my class description. Thank you. Miss Hanlon
