English 10 Course Description: Credit: 0.5 Hathaway Success Curriculum: English NCAA Approved Required of first semester sophomores, this introduction to high school English covers all the basic communication skills: writing, thinking, listening, speaking, and reading. The class is required for high school graduation and is a prerequisite for composition and literature classes.

Standards Addressed: 2012 Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, including language study, reading of literature, reading of informational texts, writing various types of texts for a variety of purposes, speaking and presentation of knowledge and ideas, and listening for comprehension and collaboration. For a detailed account of the standards addressed in this course, please see pages 38 - 57 of the Common Core State Standards at http://edu.wyomi ng.gov/sf-docs/standards/final-201 2-ela standards.pdf?sfvrsn=2.

Prerequisites: Passing both semesters of Grade Nine English.

Curriculum Outcomes (Priorities, Final Proficiencies, Expected Outcomes, Essential Skills, Guarantees)

English 10 is a semester-long course that emphasizes five core skill areas that include reading, writing, speaking, thinking, and listening, while also focusing on students' ability to grow as thinkers, writers, researchers, and individuals to become stronger in a sense of self and community.

While English 10 requires substantial writing and research components, students are also expected to write creatively and give several presentations, ranging from casual speech expectations to one formal speech presentation.

Students will look at writing from a diverse cross section of voices a nd promote their own individual voice as a writer and speaker.

Students will develop a critical lens when interpreting a variety of informational and narrative texts. This will include note-taking and interpretation of film, music, art, poetry, Internet articles, critically reviewed academic journal articles, interviewing and/or surveying experts and the public, and at least one longer text (this can even be a fictional book).

Students will practice peer- and self- editing and revising strategies throughout the semester's writing, speaking, listening, and critical reading activities.

Students will study from their own requested areas of study and those recommended by LHS Alumni, professors from various institutions, and the public to best be prepared to communicate with the world throughout their lives.

Page 3: bondurantsclasses.weebly.combondurantsclasses.weebly.com/uploads/3/8/1/3/...2016_with_calen…  · Web viewJanis Joplin. He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered

Students will focus on a topic of exceptional interest to the student and participate in all elements of the research process from inquiry (essential questioning) to critical analysis of academic texts to analysis of popular media interpretation of his or her topic of study, etc. This process will conclude with a presentation of the students' findings in a polished and fully revised, edited, peer-edited, and “expert”-edited formal speech and paper.

Important "Essential" questions concerning English 10 (Or, in other words, what will we study this semester and why?)

Why is it important to communicate effectively? How do I effectively communicate?

How does the power of words influence communication?

What is the language of power and how do I work within my many personal dialects? What are the rules ("hoops that I must jump through") to show I've communicated well? How do I interpret text with a critical eye?

What is propaganda? Am I influenced by propaganda? How do I recognize bias? How do I decide validity of a source?

What do I want to learn more about myself, others, and the world via the communication process and why?

How do I research, and what am I interested in actually researching? How do I write creatively and in the formal essay format?

Previous units have been additional poetry slam competitions, silent film analysis, group and individual short story writer's mini-workshops, and job application and college application practice.

Homework Policy: Though work for this class is often done during class sessions, completion of assignments as well as revision, editing, and polishing of written texts and verbal presentations will be occasionally required as homework. We will also have expectations for discussion and peer editing/revision on Schoology that will occasionally need to be done outside of class. If you can’t get an assignment done by the due date, please make arrangements with Ms. Bondurant.

Make-up work: Make up work should be done within 2 days of an excused absence. If you cannot complete a make-up assignment or homework assignment, you should make arrangements with Ms. Bondurant.

Retakes, redos, and late work: If you must turn in work late or redo an assignment, this is acceptable with a point penalty, which can often be made up with relevant extra credit assignments.

Grading: Assessments are graded using grade scales and rubrics that detail the expectation for each assessment.

Academic and Behavior Expectations:

1. Perhaps the most important expectation is that all people in this classroom are treated with respect, honor, and equity. You are part of this learning community and are expected to act accordingly. There will be no tolerance for belittling or insulting members of this community. This is a democratic classroom, so you have a say about our course of study, but we must always respect each other. As part of this honor, equity, and respect expectation - you-as a class-will decide upon the "norms" for our class to create a welcoming, fun environment. Ms. Bondurant is part of this community but it is yours also and those norms are the expectations we all create together!

2. You must sign out and use the pass to go to the restroom or other places. You do not have to ask to use the restroom. You are a young adult. Please make sure all errands outside of class go quickly so you are being an active part of class.

Page 5: bondurantsclasses.weebly.combondurantsclasses.weebly.com/uploads/3/8/1/3/...2016_with_calen…  · Web viewJanis Joplin. He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered

3. You must make arrangements to get make-up work turned in when absent. Think of the classroom as your job, and your boss would not hunt you down to complete work. Neither will Ms. Bondurant. She will work with you to complete make up work or late assignments but should not have to "nag" you to turn in work.

4. You should be productive during our time using technology to research.

6. I follow the Laramie High School English department's rules regarding plagiarism and cheating. You are not a copy machine. Simply, do not cheat.

7. Food and drinks are allowed in this classroom (Unless the new school rules won’t let us). However, if you do not clean up after yourself or if this privilege gets in the way of our learning community, this privilege become part of history. Don't drink or eat by computers, of course.

8. Please do not abuse using your cell phone in class. There is a lot of research to support that our smart phones can be as much an addiction as a tool. They can enhance or get in the way of communication. Let’s be part of the classroom community and present here instead of hiding in the virtual world.

9. These expectations are basically common sense. My hope for us is that we have an enjoyable, fun learning experience where we all treat each other well and learn a great deal about one another, ourselves, and the world around us in a pleasant environment.

10. Have fun!

If the structure does not permit dialogue the structure must be changed. Paulo Friere (Pedagogy of the Oppressed)

If you do not have the experience, ask. There is no shame in asking, but do not pretend you know when you don't.- Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got. - Janis Joplin

He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still-Lao Tzu

Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. -Anton Chekhov

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens-Jim Hendrix.

Chase after truth like hell and you'll free yourself, even though you never touch its coat-tails. --Clarence Darrow.
