Je suis excitée! I am excited!!

Why French Music? Pourquoi la musique française? due: mardi le 23 juin, 2020

Learning a language means learning the language but also learning about the culture behind the language; music is one of the best ways to convey culture.

Part 1:

Take a moment to think about your music preference.

Think about your favourite songs. Reflect on what captures your attention when listening to music.

On a piece of paper, make a list of what makes a song a good one.

Part 2: J’aime.. vs. Je n’aime pas..You will listen to French songs from various artists and rate them using one of two sentences:

J’aime cette chanson. = I like this song.Je n’aime pas cette chanson. = I don’t like this song.

Here’s the pronunciation of the sentences:

(jehm set shan-sohn) J’aime cette chanson. (juh nehm pah set shan-sohn) Je n’aime pas cette chanson.

Now it’s time for you to listen to each song and rate them; within 30-45 seconds of listening, you will determine whether or not you like the song. Once you figure out your liking, you can move to the next song. In other words, you do no need to listen to the entire song.

Pay attention to the beat, actions/movement, emotions, facial expressions, tone, dance, environment, etc.. Once you have figured out your preference, write down your sentences: J’aime cette chanson. vs Je n’aime pas cette chanson. Ex: a) Je n’aime pas cette chanson. b) J’aime cette chanson.

a)On va s’aimer encore - Vincent Vallières b) Mama Africa feat – KIDS UNITED c) C’est la vie – Khaled

d) Les lacs du Connemara - Michael Sardou e) Les lacs du Connemara – KIDS UNITED f) Hallelujah!!! - Ben L’Oncle Soul

g) Je vole - La famille Béliers h) Je cherché – Amir i) La vie est belle – Nassi

What did you like about the song(s)? What didn’t you like about the song(s)?

Choose one song to listen to from beginning to end. You will have to listen to the song a few times to make meaning of the message. What do you think the song message is?

Remember, the beat, actions/movement, emotions, facial expressions, tone, dance, environment etc.. give meaning to the message.

Part 3: Pronunciation of French words. Get up and move!! Remember when we were all together at Kirkbride, learning about some rules that help you with the pronunciation of French words and letter sounds? Here’s your reminder:

STPD Rule: 95% of words that end with an S, T, P or D are usually silentH Rule: all French words that begin with the letter ‘H’ are silentletter ‘e’ at the end of a word makes the (uh) sound

Pick two videos to listen to several times (you may choose more if you wish). Pay attention to the pronunciation of words and the subtitles. While listening and watching, ask yourself these questions:

1. Is the STPD Rule and the H Rule followed most of the time? or all the time? 2. Does the letter ‘e’ at the end of the word make the (uh) sound? 3. How can I gain an understanding of the French words? Look for clues in the video clips.

Here are the songs for you to choose from. Click on the image to get to the song.
