The books are about three young detectives in Rocky Beach California. Each book is a different mystery. They were a favorite of my mom’s because she enjoys mysteries.

The main character is Nancy Drew. Her good friends help her solve mysteries in many different settings – the Lilac Inn, the Shadow Ranch, etc. It was my mom’s favorite because mysteries are fun and my mom liked to pretend she was solving the mysteries along with Nancy Drew.

Caddie Woodlawnby Carol Ryrie Brink

The book is about a 12 year old girl growing up in 1860’s Wisconsin and is based on the author’s grandma. My mom liked that the main character was brave and didn’t like to do girly stuff. She made friends with Indian John and warned them of the pioneer men. It was a Newbery Award winner.

Gone With the Windby Margaret Mitchell

It’s about a southern belle, Scarlett O’Hara, and her family during and after the Civil War. It was my mom’s favorite because it is historical fiction whish was her favorite genre and because it has action, drama, and love all in one book.

This is a love story set during World War II in Russia. My mom couldn’t put it down. It had very likable characters.

The book is about a cat named Ludwig and nicknamed Wiggle, who thinks he’s the descendent of Beethoven. My mom liked that the story is from his point of view, and he is exceptionally vain. His interactions with a dog named Winston are very funny.

The book taught you colors and how to count. It rhymed and had animals that are on land, in the ocean, and in houses. My mom, loved all the characters and loved having her mom read it to her.

Hardy Boysby Franklin Dixon

Frank and Joe solve mysteries such trying to find their friends Chet and Biff who took Biff’s new boat, the Envoy for a trip and go missing. My mom liked the mystery because it was unexpected, surprising, and interesting.

The Doll House Murdersby Betty Ren Wright

This story was about a girl who visits her aunt and finds a dollhouse that’s an exact replica of her aunt’s home. The dolls inside the dollhouse keep turning up in different rooms without her even touching them. My mom liked it because she never knew what would happen next.

The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

Four siblings go to the country. While playing in a mansion, they find a wardrobe that transports them to a parallel world where they encounter mystical creatures, like Aslan the lion, and become royals for the area. My mom liked it because it was a great escape. She really wanted to go there herself.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factoryby Roald DahlThere was a competition worldside to win a trip around the famous Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory. My mom loved the beginning of the book. The author did a great job depicting how poor Charlies was. Her favorite part was when Charlie found a coin in the snow. She likes how the ending lent itself to a sequel.

This book is about five sisters and their mother. The father is killed in a war. The oldest daughter’s a feminist. It takes place in the 1800’s. It was a favorite of my mom’s because of true love. It was a love story and the people you expect to get together, don’t.

The Story of Helen Keller

This tells the life of Helen Keller. She was deaf and blind but with the help of her teacher, Annie Sullivan, she was able to communicate. My mother enjoyed reading about how she was able to communicate even though she was deaf and blind.

Wilbur the pig is saved by his friends from death. They help him to win the top prize of the county fair which showed his owner how special he was. My mom liked the book because it demonstrated hope and the potential of finding happiness in difficult situations.

The Dark Tower Seriesby Stephen KingRoland is a gunslinger from a distant land. He travels through multi-layered worlds, searching for the evil Skin Man in order to free Debaria. It is my mom’s favorite book because the journeys and battles take the reader to past, present, and future times as his honor, desire and beliefs are challenged.

Book of Bible Storiesby Watchtower Society

This book consists of stories of the Bible put in simple language so that young children can understand it. My mom loved the story of Jesus and was interested to see the miracles he performed.

Encyclopedia Brown Seriesby Donald Sobol

These are child detective books where a boy is always trying to find the answer to a mystery. They were a favorite of my mom’s because she liked to try to figure out the mystery before Encyclopedia did.

The Secret Gardenby Frances Hodgson Burnett

This story is about a little girl whose parents died in India and she has moved to England to live with her uncle. She’s a lonely, arrogant, spoiled, child who doesn’t know about relationships. She learns about what it means to be a human being and a friend when she discovers a secret garden. My mom thought it was a magical world and had great characters.
