Der Rosenkavalier

Sunday, 27 November 2011

Richard Strauss's masterpiece of love and intrigue in 18th-century Vienna, Der Rosenkavalier (or 'The Knight of the Rose') is a thoughtful comedy in three parts about life, love and the passage of time.

This Opera Australia production was filmed at the Sydney Opera House and stars the internationally acclaimed Australian soprano Cheryl Barker, and Strauss specialist Andrew Litton conducting the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.

There are four main characters - the Marschallin, wife of Field Marshall von Werdenberg (Cheryl Barker), her much younger lover Octavian (Catherine Carby), her bovine cousin Baron Ochs (Manfred Hemm) and his much younger prospective fiancée, Sophie (Hye Seoung Kwon).

The Marschallin nominates Octavian to be the Rosenkavalier, Baron Ochs's envoy to Sophie. The young couple fall in love, Ochs behaves badly and the Marschallin is left to sort it out, and face the prospect of losing her lover to a younger woman.

Der Rosenkavalier will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, November 27 at 10:10pm

Restoration Home: Stanwick Hall

Sunday, 27 November 2011

This week Caroline Quentin is in Northamptonshire, at Stanwick Hall where years of neglect have left fungus growing on walls running wet with damp, and the timbers are so rotten that one good storm might bring down the roof. The house is in appalling condition and faces an incredible battle for survival one which city high-flyers, Gina and Simon, have taken on.

The Hall is on the buildings-at-risk register which means it's one of the most endangered structures in the country.

As the restoration throws up more and more serious problems, long forgotten evidence comes to light showing it was built on the biggest financial scandal of the early 18th century and was emblematic of the huge upheaval in the early 19th century that changed the landscape of Britain forever.

Who's Been Sleeping In My House?: Wray Avenue

Monday, 28 November 2011

As soon as they saw it, Sue and James McAuliffe knew that the Victorian sandstone cottage in Wray Avenue, Fremantle was the house in which they wanted to raise their family.

Sitting in the middle of one of Australia's most celebrated port cities, the house acquired a lively reputation during Fremantle's defining moment - the America's Cup. It wasn't long before the McAuliffes started to hear stories about the competing yachtsmen and members of the jetset who made it 'party central', and they have always been keen to learn more about what went on behind their walls.

But there's another, more unsettling story about the Fremantle house. One day, a stranger knocked on the door and told Sue and James a tale about a previous owner who tragically died in their kitchen. Ever since, the family has always wondered about the death and the identity of the mysterious visitor.

A third puzzle to the house surrounds the provenance of a rustic shed in the backyard. Clues point to it originating from the 1880s, and if so, it could be that the Fremantle home began life as one of the earliest farms in the region. But as Adam Ford soon discovers, the evidence doesn't stack up.

Country House Rescue: Abbey Dore Court

Wednesday, 30 November 2011

Abbey Dore Court is set in 150 acres of Herefordshire farmland. The house was bought by Charis Ward in 1967 for £12,000 and, up until 10 years ago, the house was a happy home where Charis's children and grandchildren grew up. In 2000, Charis decided to leave Abbey Dore to live in a more manageable property and the house has since fallen into disrepair. Charis's 26-year-old granddaughter, Clare, is determined to bring her formerly happy home back to life, so she asks Ruth Watson to help.

Ruth thinks the location is a prime spot to run a successful bed and breakfast. She also encourages Clare to open up some of the land for local craft and farmers' markets, but on the day of the trial run, bad weather puts a dampener on the idea.

On Ruth's return she discovers that change is afoot; Clare's brother and sister are now onboard at the house, the farmers’ market has been shelved and the family now plans to turn the house into a holiday let. Ruth confronts the family to find out why and cautions them against their decision, but Charis is determined to do as she likes.

Despite everything, work gets underway and Abbey Dore's restoration begins. Ruth advises the younger generation to stand their ground with their headstrong grandmother, but she admires Charis's spirit and is pleased to see the improvements they're making. The future of Abbey Dore Court might not be guaranteed, but it looks brighter than it has for decades.

Outnumbered

Wednesday, 30 November 2011

Outnumbered follows the daily chaos of family life with two parents and three young children locked in an unequal contest (hence the title). Containing elements of improvisation, this comedy is an honest portrayal of the well meaning parental incompetence that happens in most homes, as Mum (Claire Skinner) and Dad (Hugh Dennis) attempt to raise their kids with the minimum of emotional damage for all concerned.

Experience the daily rollercoaster of family life as Mum and Dad try to keep up with the inquisitive and imaginative minds of their three hilarious offspring: The eldest is Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey), a thoughtful eleven year old whose parents are a perpetual embarrassment to him. Then there's Ben (Daniel Roche), a terrifyingly exuberant eight year old who, when his sister locks herself in the bathroom, advises his exasperated Dad to lob beavers in through the window so that they can eat the door. Finally, there's Karen (Ramona Marquez), a five-year-old girl with the looks of an angel and the mind of a barrister, who can demoralise adults at will with her relentless interrogations.

When Mum finds an inappropriate image on the family computer an investigation begins. Gran is still staying and Dad is horrified at the thought of having a heart to heart with her. Karen is convinced that she has won half a million pounds and starts to spend it. Meanwhile, the ancient game of chess will never be quite the same again after Ben brings his own special talents to it.

Jimmy's Food Factory: Pub Grub

Thursday, 1 December 2011 New Series

British Farmer Jimmy Doherty is back for a second series to unravel the scientific secrets behind mass production of food.

At his own food factory, in his Suffolk barn, Jimmy uses farmyard and household junk to go back to the basics to create his own supermarket food.

He starts with pub grub classics - hot chips.

He shows why supermarket chips are easier to crisp in the oven than home-made potato chips. He gets some explosive results when he tries to make oven chips with a tennis racquet.

And when he turns his hand to making his own chicken Kiev, he fashions it from a meat processing machine, using an old car tyre.

To complete the pub menu, Jimmy discovers how a farm boss who produces 480,000 sirloin steaks every year, makes sure every one is uniformly tender and juicy.

Running To America

Thursday, 1 December 2011

Running To America is a story of pure inspiration. Four young Indigenous men from the Australian outback are plucked from obscurity by marathon legend Robert de Castella to run the world's most famous race, the New York Marathon. He's convinced that Indigenous Australians have a natural talent for distance running - but have never been given the chance to excel.

The four men come from isolated communities in Arnhem Land, the Kimberley and the Central Desert. They are cut off from the everyday opportunities that modern youth take for granted. Now these young men are thrown into a brutal eight-month training regime to teach them how to run distance.

The team undergoes elite athletic training at the Australian Institute of Sport under the watchful eye of de Castella. They pound desert roads to get fit and they deal with a host of social problems that often beset Indigenous communities. The training takes place in isolated, but magnificent locations across Australia's harsh interior. The people and communities in these areas are often overlooked by mainstream society, and in a show of solidarity even the local police force has become involved by providing transport and logistics to help them achieve their goals.

Their grand ambitions finally play out on the streets of New York. Will the four runners even complete the race, let alone excel? Will they overcome the challenges in their lives and make it to the finish line? Running To America is an uplifting story about dreams and ambitions.

My Family: Labour Pains

Friday, 2 December 2011 New SeriesIn the final series of this popular long-running British sitcom, Ben (Robert Lindsay) returns home from a hard day's work, angrier than ever at the way Cavitex are now treating the dentists.

He informs Susan (Zoe Wanamaker) that they've introduced time cards at work, and he is outraged because he doesn't have enough time to complete the crossword during his toilet break. The following morning, Ben has a meeting with fellow dentists about the situation with Mr Griffith where he makes a passionate speech against Mr Griffith and Cavitex, but when he receives a call from his boss, his attitude becomes much friendlier, especially out of earshot of his colleagues.

Arriving at the office, Ben is uneasy at what to expect, but he's in for a surprise when Mr Griffith offers him a promotion. The array of items on 'his' new desk distracts him from giving a proper answer to Mr. Griffith, but he soon accepts the position. Returning home, Ben attempts to show off his new suit and job to Michael (Gabriel Thomson), however Michael’s too busy playing his new game.

The Cavitex meeting that evening causes Ben's old colleagues to realise they've been betrayed, especially when the answer to Roger's 'excessively polite demands' causes both sides to take a step back. But as things come to a head for Ben, does he have a plan up his sleeve?

Artscape: Ben Quilty And The Maggots

Winner of the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 2002 and the Moran prize for portraiture in 2009, Ben Quilty's rise as one of Australia's leading young contemporary artists, is nothing short of phenomenal.

Quilty's signature is paintings so thickly laden with luscious applications of paint that they literally ooze. Despite his success, it seems Quilty has never quite exorcised the hoon in him. He has built a career painting the booze-fuelled world of the Australian suburban bloke's culture. Having grown up in the western suburbs of Sydney, he draws upon the memories of his youth. Muscle cars, skulls, tatts, burgers and his drunken teenage mates all feature, but it's not all beer and skittles.

Since making this documentary Quilty has had a number of solo exhibitions both in Australia and overseas in South Korea, Philippines and Hong Kong. He won the 2011 Archibald Prize with his portrait of Margaret Olley earlier this year.
