Haiku Poetry L.O: To understand and compare haiku poems. S.C:

I can break words into syllables. I know that a haiku has an order

of 5, 7, 5 syllables per line. I can discuss my favourite haiku

and describe what makes it effective.

A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry, generally about nature, that only has a certain number of syllables per line. Line 1 – 5 syllables Line 2 – 7 syllables Line 3 – 5 syllables

This cannot be changed. Look at the examples of haikus labelled below. Read them aloud to yourself. Think about what each poem is about.

Task Now choose your favourite poem from below. Check that it is definitely a haiku by separating each word into syllables and counting them per line. Can you explain why the poem is your favourite? What makes it a good haiku? How did it make you feel when reading it?

I can experiment with alliteration. I can check my haikus follow the 5, 7, 5

structure. Task Before we write our final haikus, we must plan and gather ideas. Split your page into 3 columns or use the example resource at the end of this document. Write 2 syllable words in one column, 3 syllable words in the next and 4 syllable words in the last column. These words can be used in your haikus later.

Now create 3 mind maps of different themed haikus. Themes to include could be:

- Summer - Spring - Winter - The beach/ocean - A river

See if you can come up with several haikus per mind map. These are practise haikus and we can make this better tomorrow. Remember to include alliteration.

Haiku Poetry

L.O: To write a collection of haikus.

S.C: I know that haikus have 3 lines and

use 5, 7, 7 syllabic structure. I know that haikus are short poems

often about nature. I can use alliteration in my haikus. I can use a thesaurus to upscale my

verbs and adjectives. I can change lines after completing

the required syllables. I can use a simile if appropriate. I can include a title for my haikus.

Task Today it is time to write 3 fantastic haikus! They will be better than the ones in your plan. You need to use the success criteria as a checklist to make sure you have included everything.

The 3 haikus can be all about the same theme, or 3 different themes. Try to find some exciting words in a thesaurus or on a computer with an adult’s supervision.

L.O: To investigate who has the largest hands in my family.

S.C: I can measure

accurately using the correct measurement (cm and mm).

I can record measurements in an organised way.
