The mission of the Diamond R-IV School District is “Success through rigor, relevance and high expectations!”

The Diamond R-IV School District envisions schools in which teachers, administrators, parents, students, and the community share the responsibility for advancing the school mission. Educators will provide opportunities for each individual student to achieve at the maximum level of his/her potential. The school facilities will provide a safe environment and be conducive for achieving the goals of the district. Graduates will have achieved success through rigor, relevance and high expectations during their years at Diamond, preparing them to be successful, productive members of society.

The A+ Schools Program is a school improvement initiative established by the Outstanding Schools Act of 1993. The following are the goals of the A+ Schools Program:

All students graduate from high school. All students complete a selection of high school studies that is challenging and for which

there are identified learning expectations. All students proceed from high school graduation to a college, post secondary

vocational/technical school, or high wage job with work place skill development opportunities.

The program entitles our graduates who have met all requirements to receive reimbursement for tuition and fees to any Missouri public community college, vocational/technical school for two years (six college semesters) or the completion of one certificate program through a vocational/technical school. The tuition incentives will only be made available to reimburse the unpaid balance of the cost of tuition and fees after available federal post secondary student financial assistance funds including scholarships have been applied to those costs.

To be eligible to receive the tuition incentive**, the recipient must:

a. Be considered a full-time student by the institution;b. Be a US Citizen; andc. Complete the two years of full-time enrollment at a community college or a public

Students will be eligible to receive the above incentive for two years if they maintain a 2.5 GPA in the post secondary setting.

Diamond High School must certify a student as having met all the following requirements. To be certified, a student must:

Sign an A+ Program Student Agreement. Attend an A+ High School for three consecutive years immediately prior to graduation. Graduate from Diamond High School with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or

above on a 4.0 grading scale (non-weighted). Graduate from Diamond High School with a cumulative attendance record of 95% or

better. Perform 50 hours of unpaid tutoring. Maintain a record of good citizenship and avoidance of unlawful use of alcohol and

drugs. Make a good faith effort to first secure all available federal post secondary student

financial assistance (FAFSA). Male students need to sign up for Selective Services if 18 years old.

Student Eligibility

In order to obtain financial incentives, the requirements are for a student to attend Diamond High School for three consecutive years prior to graduation.

The student must enroll in Diamond High School no later than September 30 th of the student’s sophomore year or transfer from an A+ designated high school where enrollment was prior to September 30th of the student’s sophomore year.

If a student withdraws or transfers from Diamond High School after the beginning of their sophomore year, the student will not be considered for the A+ Schools Program unless they re-enroll in an A+ designated school.

If a student transfers back to Diamond from a designated school, they may continue to participate in the A+ Schools Program.

To meet the eligibility requirement for grade point average, the student must: Graduate with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (on a

non-weighted scale). Rounding up a grade point average is not allowed. The cumulative grade point average is based on all four years of high school. The student’s official transcript will serve as evidence of grade point average for

admission into a public community college or public vocational/technical school.

The attendance rate must be at least 95% (approximately no more than 8 days absent a year or 32 days over four years) for the accumulated time from the beginning of the student’s freshman year until graduation. The following guidelines will be followed:

The accumulative attendance information will be gathered from the official computerized information system used by the district.

Rounding up of percentages is not allowed.

After receiving the status notification, the parent will have 30 days to file an appeal with the A+ Program Coordinator. If an appeal is not filed within 30 days of notification, then an appeal for those days missed will not be considered.

Parents should use the Appeal of Absence form (located in the Forms Section). Students with specific health histories must make sure that the medical documentation

of chronic or long term health related problems are on file with the school nurse and such health related problems shall be considered in possible review situations.

No appeals allowed after a student has graduated.

Those submitting a request for an appeal of absence shall provide the A+ Program Coordinator with official documentation of the following:

o Hospitalization—Note from Doctoro Chronic Health Problems—Note from Doctor and School Nurseo Court Dates—Note from Court Officialo Catastrophic Illness—Note from Doctor

(Normal illnesses are not considered catastrophic.)

A student will not have an appeal granted if any absence is due to any of the following: Truancy Skipping Class Personal/Family Vacation Transportation Problems (unless it involves school provided service) Suspended from class or school for any reason

When all of the information is received, a review committee will meet at the end of each semester to decide if an appeal for absences for A+ status determination will be granted. The review committee for attendance appeals will be composed of the following:

Principal Guidance Counselor School Nurse Two DHS Teachers A+ Program Coordinator (acting as facilitator and non-voting member)

After the review committee reaches a decision, the A+ Program Coordinator will notify the parents by letter.

An A+ Program Student is required to perform 50 hours of unpaid tutoring/mentoring. The following guidelines have been established for A+ tutoring:

Official tutoring log sheet must be kept by the student, signed by a school official sponsoring the activity, and turned in to the A+ office.

All tutoring/mentoring must be done on Diamond School District premises under the supervision of a teacher (tutoring may not be done at an individuals home or at a school not within the Diamond School District).

The A+ Program Coordinator or the sponsoring school may terminate the tutoring experience.

The A+ Program Student is responsible for being present at the agreed upon day and time for the tutoring/mentoring. If absent, it is the responsibility of the A+ Program Student to notify the adult in charge of the A+ tutoring experience.

All tutoring must be approved by the A+ Program Coordinator. No tutoring hours will be accepted after May 1st of a student’s graduating year.

A+ Tutor: Encourage and support the learner to improve academically.A+ Mentor: Encourage the student in a variety of academic, personal, and social issues.

Cadet Teaching : Junior and/or Senior students can take this class for high school credit. The A+ Program Student will be assigned an elementary, middle, or high school classroom. The time counted towards tutoring must be actual student contact.A+ Tutoring Hour: Junior or Senior students can take this class for high school credit. The A+ Program Student will be assigned an elementary, middle, or high school classroom to work with an individual or small group of students. themselves and their school by adhering to all school policies, local, state, and federal laws. The following is a list of disqualifications:

Possession or Use of Illegal Drugs. Possession or Use of Alcohol. Expulsion from School. Any offense outlined in the Safe Schools Act. A continuous pattern of any one or combination of discipline referrals.

Citizenship certification will be based upon the following: Discipline record of the student as determined by the student’s principal. Compliance with the Diamond High School Handbook.

The A+ Schools Program requires students/parents to first make a good faith effort to secure all available federal post secondary financial assistance funds that do not require repayment before A+ funding will be available.

Complete and send in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA information must be sent to the community college or public vocational/technical school that the student is planning to attend.

The FAFSA application is available in the A+ Program Office, DHS Counselor’s Office, or you can apply electronically over the Internet. The Internet address is www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Parents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, but not before January 1st of the year of the student’s graduation.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has ruled that all males age 18 years or older at the time of graduation must register for the Selective Service in order to be declared A+ certified.This may be completed online at http://www.sss.gov/.

A+ Program Student files will be kept in the A+ Program Office. A file will be kept on each student once the student enters into an A+ Schools Agreement. In each file the following documentation will be kept:

The A+ Program Coordinator will provide every parent/guardian with an update of the continued progress of his/her student toward A+ certification.

A status notification report will be sent home with the A+ Program Student after the completion of each semester of the school year.

Understand the goals of the cooperating teacher before beginning tutoring/mentoring.Make sure you and the cooperating teacher discuss what the goals and requirements are for the student’s tutoring/mentoring session. Follow the directions given by the teacher. If you

have questions, ask the teacher. Whenever your cooperating teacher makes a request of you, please follow his/her directions. Remember, you are still on school property, and all regular school rules apply.

Devote the proper time and attitude towards the student.Introduce yourself to the student(s) and make them feel comfortable. Be patient, a good listener, flexible, and creative with the students. If the student begins to get frustrated, be encouraging and try a different method of introducing the material. Encourage students to do their own thinking. Be positive and understanding with the students. Compliment the student often! Use phrases like: “Good Job”, “Don’t give up”, “You can do it”. Be committed! The student will look forward to you being there. Keep your sense of humor with the student, and be upbeat and positive. Be understanding to the student’s needs, but respect their privacy. If a student reveals personal information, keep it confidential unless it is something dangerous to the student or someone else. If this happens, report the information to the teacher or principal.

LanguageYou are a role model. The student sees you as a teacher. Use correct grammar and appropriate language. Avoid incorrect statements. Never use profanity. Even words that you wouldn’t think of as unacceptable may be to younger students. If you are unsure about a word, do NOT say it.

Be reliable, prompt and punctual.When you make a commitment to a teacher and a student to follow a tutoring schedule, do so. Do not arrive late, you are depriving them of a learning opportunity, and giving them the impression that they are not important enough for you to get there on time. Be prepared.

Dress and HygieneYou are a role model for younger students when you tutor. Make sure your clothing is clean, neat, and appropriate. You must follow school dress code.

Modifying a Child’s BehaviorIf a student is misbehaving, stay calm and do not display anger. You cannot touch, scare, hurt, or threaten a student in any way. Do not try to ignore them if they are acting up, the situation will likely worsen. Let them know that you are there to help them and the behavior is keeping you from being helpful to them. If the behavior continues, immediately end the tutoring session and contact the teacher. Explain to the student that the session is over for the day and you will return when the student is ready to work with you.

Safety PrecautionsFollow these precautions to keep you, the student, and the program functioning as planned.

1. Keep yourself physically separate from the student by allowing no one to sit on each others’ lap; brush or play with each other’s hair; hug, kiss, or tickle each other, etc.

2. No horseplay, no clowning around, no teasing; only tutoring/mentoring allowed.3. Under no circumstances do you take any student to the bathroom.

DIAMOND HIGH SCHOOLA+ SCHOOLS PROGRAM AGREEMENT

Students graduating from a designated Missouri A+ School may qualify to receive financial assistance for tuition and feesto attend a Missouri community college or technical school. As a Diamond High School student you may be eligible for these incentives. The state of Missouri agrees to:

Reimburse the cost of tuition and general fees for up to two years Accept enrollment in any Missouri public community college or vocational/technical school Guarantee the incentives for a period of four years after the student graduates from high school

Signing this agreement in no way obligates the student to participate in the A+ Schools Program. It shows that the student is aware of the opportunity afforded by this program and will satisfy the letter of intent requirement for those who choose to participate.

Non A+ Colleges/Universities Offering A+ Incentives

The college and universities listed do not accept A+ funds directly from the State of Missouri. They are NOT Missouri public 2-year community colleges or vocational/technical schools, therefore, they are not part of the A+ Schools Program. However, several non-A+ colleges/universities in Missouri offer scholarships for certified A+ Program Student Graduates.

If you are an A+ student who is not planning to attend a Missouri community college or post secondary vocational/technical school, your A+ status can still earn you financial benefits if you attend one of the colleges/universities offering A+ scholarships.

Many colleges and universities in Missouri also offer transfer scholarships to students who have used A+ benefits to attend community college for two years. Those students should check with the individual Missouri college/university they are interested in attending after two years in community college.
