MAIN PURPOSE OF POST

DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES1. Management and Leadership

1.3To lead, develop and manage the Women’s Aid Research Strategy and programme of work, ensuring research and reports reflect the concerns and voices of survivors and Women’s Aid’s members.

1.4Lead the development of Women’s Aid’s data systems to make use of new technologies and techniques and ensure optimum use of data collected.

1.5To develop and manage Women’s Aid’s policy programme in consultation with the Head of Campaigns and Public Affairs and Executive Management Team

1.6To contribute to the preparation of the annual business plan in consultation and to monitor and evaluate the success of those targets on an annual cycle.

1.7To ensure efficient and effective internal communication, information flows and to foster co-operation between staff.

1.8To take part at Women’s Aid AGM and Annual conference as required and present regular written reports as necessary.

1.9To manage special short term projects concerned with the development or operation of Women’s Aid as required.

1.10 To manage the Femicide Census project working with key external stakeholders (developed by Karen Ingala Smith and Women’s Aid working in partnership, with support from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP and Deloitte LLP).

2. Operational Evaluation, Policy Development and Research

2.1To ensure the management and delivery of a programme of research and policy on violence against women and girls in consultation with the Women’s Aid wider team.

2.2To ensure that policy, practice and relevant legislation on domestic abuse is monitored and that appropriate research is conducted to inform Women’s Aid and its members.

2.3To continually develop the collection and presentation of data to increase its accessibility to, and impact on its audiences.

2.4To ensure the provision of information and advice on domestic abuse to the national network of local Women’s Aid members, relevant agencies and partnerships, as well as Women’s Aid national team.

2.5To ensure the Chief Executive, Executive Management Team and relevant staff are kept up to date with all relevant developments in the field of domestic abuse, and the wider issues of violence against women and girls as relevant.

2.6To work with the Head of Campaigns and Public Affairs to ensure effective engagement on policy and research by Women’s Aid.

3. Line Management

3.1To carry out management, supervision, appraisal and development of staff in the Research and Evaluation team to ensure high quality service and achievement of the annual business plan.

3.2To ensure the successful recruitment, induction and initial training of all staff within the Research and Evaluation team.

3.3To oversee the work of the team and ensure good cross-team working.

3.4To manage consultants.

4.1To ensure proper management of any delegated budgets, participate in budgeting and financial management.

4.2To support the development of budgets for fundraising bids which include the work of the team.

5. General Responsibilities

5.1To maintain clear and adequate records of work done and to produce reports on work programmes and activities as required by the Chief Executive.

5.2To contribute to team meetings and organisational priorities, to prepare and participate in supervision and appraisal meetings.

5.3To be on call for support with Research queries from the media when required and to be a media spokeswoman for the organisation alongside a bank of others.

5.4To provide back up and support for the management of other staff or to ensure their tasks are covered when they or their manager is absent (by agreement and if required).

5.5To assist in the organisation of conferences or events organised by Women’s Aid, if required.

5.6To abide by all organisational policies, codes of conduct and practice, and to ensure this is carried out throughout the Charity, and to work within a framework of equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice.

PERSON SPECIFICATION: Research and Evaluation Manager (Maternity Cover)

EXPERIENCEEssential:

Experience of both qualitative and quantitative social research techniques in a work environment.

Experience of developing appropriate methodologies for undertaking research.

Extensive experience of writing and producing briefings, reports or other information resources.

Experience of managing team members to deliver against project plans. Developing and reviewing business plans, including setting performance

measures Setting and monitoring budgets A non-judgmental approach to survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and a

clear understanding of the gendered nature of violence against women and girls

Desirable: Policy development and implementation.

SKILLS & ABILITIESEssential:

Excellent and proven research and evaluation skills. Highly developed analytical skills, with the ability to apply creative solutions

to complex problems Ability to plan and deliver projects within a set timeframe and with clear

outputs/outcomes Excellent written and report writing skills. Ability to work on own initiative to meet objectives in a complex, changing

environment and to plan, initiate, manage and evaluate projects, to meet project budgets.

Highly computer literate and proficient in word-processing, spreadsheets and databases, and email technology, preferably in a Windows based environment

Desirable Proven IT skills, with experience of developing, maintaining and manipulating

large databases and using other analytical tools for research and evaluation purposes.

Ability to create effective and efficient systems for gathering and analysing complex data.

KNOWLEDGEEssential:

SUMMARY OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Terms of appointment: Confirmation of appointment will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. This will normally be of six months (less for short term contracts). During this time an employee will be expected to establish their suitability for the post. During the probationary period employment may be terminated in writing, giving one week's notice by either party (this may be waived by mutual agreement). Only any statutory dismissal procedure will apply during the probationary period. There is no probationary period for contracts of under 3 months.

Salary: Salary is paid in arrears through bank credit by the 25th of each month.

Working hours: The standard working hours for this post are 37 hours per week, based in Bristol; benefits include a generous bank holidays and annual leave package and contributory pension scheme.

Support and supervision: Women’s Aid has a commitment to providing regular supervision and support to staff with annual appraisals forming a key part of staff development. We have a training policy in place and encourage staff to take an active role in their career development plan. Pension: Women’s Aid is enrolled with the People’s Pension scheme. Women’s Aid normally contributes 7% of salary and the employee contributes 3% towards the group pension scheme. Eligible staff will be automatically enrolled on the scheme when they have successfully completed the 3 month interim probationary review. .

Annual Leave: Women’s Aid offers an annual leave entitlement of 25 days per year rising by one day per year until 30 days annual leave per year is reached. In addition, we offer 8 days public holidays plus 2 additional days in March and August. All leave entitlement is calculated pro-rata for part time employees.

Other leave: Employees have contractual rights to time off for reasons of sickness, maternity and other circumstances.

Period of notice: 1 month after your probationary period has been completed.

Union: You have a right to membership of a trade union. Women’s Aid recognises Unison.

Asylum and Immigration Act 1996: To confirm your right to work in the UK, Women’s Aid will need to see the original of at least one document from a specified list (available on the gov.uk website). Most commonly this is a British Passport.
