We’re Going on a NUMBER Hunt!
To celebrate maths week the children from the nursery have been looking for numerals in the
world around us…door numbers …dates… numbers on maps…
phone numbers… times… numbers on buses and
cars…Which numbers can you find?

Robert, the Park Ranger informed us aboutHOLYROOD PARK
within its 650-acre (260 ha) area, was created in 1541!Arthur's Seat, the highest point in Edinburgh, is at the centre of the
park. It is situated just to the east of the city centre, about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east of Edinburgh Castle. The hill rises above the city to a height of 250.5 m (822 ft). It was formed by an extinct volcano (approximately
350 million years old). Did you know Arthur’s Seat used to be double its size?
Look what we have been up to during MATHS WEEK:
It took us approximately 15 minutes to walk from Royal School Primary School to the Rangers Hut. (We were a big group.)
Can you beat our time? We estimated how many star jumps etc. we could perform in 10 seconds.
P3 searched for Shape!
Some of us spotted more than 1000 cylinder during our walk.
We performed races and practised ordinal numbers.
We practised Place Value by using sticks and stones to display a number.
equals 35!We had lots of fun estimating how many steps we take to
measure 10 metres! One superstar got it spot on!
We hope you have lots of fun climbing Arthur’s Seat and playing at Holyrood Park! Can you bring back more (of your own) facts?

Some nearby sites of interest:
Arthur’s Seat How many steps will it take you to reach
the top? Create a map of Edinburgh from your view
at the top.
Holyrood Palace
Use your adding or multiplying skills to work out how many window panes there are. (E.g. if there are 10 panes in 1 window, how many will there be in 5 windows?)
St Margaret's Loch
Measure the circumference of the loch. Create a Carroll diagram about the different
animals that live in / on the loch. (e.g. Wings / No wings & White / not white.)
Scottish Parliament
What 2D shapes are the windows? Can you measure the circumference of
each pond? What is their total if added together?
Holyrood Park
Create an Outdoor Shop. Different parts of nature are worth different amount of money. (e.g. grass = 1p, stones = 2p & flowers = 5p)
Collect a group of sticks and put them in a pile. Reach in and grab some from this pile. Estimate how many you have taken. Check if you are correct.
How long does it take you to walk there? (In minutes and seconds? Only seconds?)
Queen’s Drive Make a tally chart of the number of
different vehicles passing by in 5 minutes. Convert this into a bar graph and make up
some questions for a partner to answer?

MATHS IN THE CANONGATE KIRK
() O D X + -
BY PRIMARY 6
In P6 for maths week we went to Canongate Kirk and made numeracy (Addition, subtraction, multiplacation and division) and maths (Data handling, ect.) challenges. We then returned on friday when our parents came where we parents
also helped.
these were some of our questions:
Who’s gravestone is the oldest? Answer: David Riccio 1566
Who’s gravestone is the youngest? Answer: Fiona Cowell 2016
Find Christina Robinsons grave. Note down her date of death. Answer: 29th march 1886
Find the more recent grave of the McQuarries (last person died 2016) add up the ages and dates seperately. Then take away the ages from the dates.
Answer:13,182
As you can see they are related to the gravestones and the suroundings of the Canongate Kirk.
P7 went to Starbucks to collect some Data for our Tally charts.
We took our Maths jotters to write down our information. Here is what we found out!
