History

Thailand called their people a ‘Thai’ and holds many theories about their origin and race. One long believed theory was the Thai originated in the southern part of China, which is Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton nowadays. After a great number of people migrated, The Thai people founded their kingdom over the central plain of the Chao Phraya basin. In that time the area was under sovereign of the Khmer Empire, the Thai migration period was called Nanchao (650-1250 A.D.). Thai people founded their independent state of Sukhothai around 1238 A.D. after King Sir Intaratit with his forces attacked ‘Kom Samad Klon LomPonk’ or Khmer and Mons to independence from their existing and program himself to be the king. SukhoThai, the first Thai capital state in a land of plenty governed by paternal and benevolent kings and the most famous was King Ramkamhaeng the Great who introduced the Thai alphabet. In 1350, the mightier state of Ayutthaya exerted its influence over Sukhothai and the city that approximately 150 years last was finally fall down.

Ayutthaya (1350-1767), the Thai second capital adopted Khmer cultural influences from the very beginning. Ayutthaya's sovereigns were absolute monarchs and assumed the title devaraja (God-King) as the traditional Khmer. During the 17th century, Ayutthaya started diplomatic and

commercial relations with western countries and the city once was well known as ‘The Center of International Trade of East’. In 1767, a Burmese succeeded in capturing Ayutthaya. But Seven months after the fall of, a young general named Phraya Taksin and his troops came back to the destroyed capital and free the Burmese occupation.

General Taksin, decided to established his new capital at Thon Buri on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, a site nearer to the sea which would facilitate foreign trade, ensure the procurement of arms, and make defense or withdrawl easier in case of a renewed Burmese attack. According to the lack of central authority since the fall of Ayutthaya led to the rapid disintegration of the kingdom, the Thon Buri Period last only 15 years (1767-1772). King Taksin's reign was well known as the reuniting period.

Government Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, headed by King Rama IX or King Bhumibol Adulyadej who exercises his legislative power through the National Assembly, executive power through the Council of Ministers and Judicial power through the Courts of Law.

Climate The climate is tropical humidity with three seasons, hot (March to June), rainy (July to October), and cool (November to February). Temperature varies from 38° C to 19°C and average temperatures are about 29°C.

Clothing Thin clothes, cotton clothes, and light-weight suits are recommended. Light sweaters or jackets may be use in cool season, especially in the office building or shopping department store.

Water Tap water in Bangkok is clean but water in transparent bottle is potable to drink.

Currency Thai currency is Baht. A baht is divided into 100 satang with His Majesty the King Rama IX picture remain. They are coins and banknotes, coins are 25 and 50 satang, 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht. Banknotes are separated by the color; start with 20 baht banknote in green, 100 (red), 500 (purple) and 1000 (grey) baht. Foreign currencies exchange into Thai baht is widely provided by banks and authorized money exchangers. Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) can be found in major tourist area. Major credit cards are also widely accepted.

Bangkok is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. The city was founded as the capital of Thailand in 1782 by King Rama I of the present Chakri Dynasty. The King commanded to transfer the royal capital across the river from Thon Buri to Bangkok and build the Grand Palace at the area which is called ‘Rattanakosin’ island as the name of an Era. King Rama I named the new capital ‘Krung Thep’ or ‘City of Angel’ to reference to the ancient Ayutthaya Kingdom. Rama II (1809-1824) continued the restoration begun by his predecessor while Rama III (1824-1851) reopened relations with foreign nations, especially Western and developed trade with China. The city actually called ‘Old Bangkok’ until this reign. The modern Bangkok began in Rama IV Era, King Mongkut or Rama IV, (1851-1868) who was name by the Wesrtern "The King and I" concluded treaties with European countries and established modern Thailand to avoided colonialization. The King also made many social and economic reforms during his reign.

King Chulalongkorn, Rama V (1869-1910) was the first King of Thailand who visited foreign countries. He continued his father's tradition of reform.

The most important were abolishing slavery, improving the public welfare and administrative system. King Vajiravudh, Rama VI (1910-1925) reformed compulsory education and other educational reforms also were introduced by. ‘King Vajiravudhs’ college’or ‘Kings’ College’ the most famous boarding school in Thailand was built in this period too. Thailand changed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy during the reign of King Prajadhipok, (1925-1935). The king abdicated in 1933 and was succeeded by his nephew, King Ananda Mahidol (1935-1946). The country's name was changed from Siam to Thailand with the advent of a democratic government in 1939. A present monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who is called ‘Phor Luang’ (The Great Royal Father) and is remark as ‘the soul of the country’ is King Rama IX of the Chakri Dynasty.

The threads are large, rough and of a dull yellow shade. After refinement, bleaching and spinning, they become thick, coarse silk threads. Mai klang or mai song silk are threads of a continuous reeling process .When the filament from one cocoon is finished, it is replaced by another cocoon. After constant reeling, the reeler and adjust the size of the silk filament to medium or smooth with a few knots. Mai noi or yod mai, these kinds of silk remark as the most expensive type. The threads are obtained from the innermost part of the cocoon. They are yellow, fine and delicate.

Day 5 Kanchanaburi –Srinakarin Dam and Erawan Water Fall

How to Get Around

Airport Express: An air-condition bus from Suvarnaphumi airport to the city, the schedule is every 45 minutes from 05:00hrs. to 23:00-24:00 hrs. The route is AE1 to Silom, AE2 to Banglumphu, AE3 to Sukhumvit and AE4 to Hualumphong Train station. The fare is 150 baht.

City Buses: The bus network offers a fun way to explore the city cheaper. There are both non air-condition and air-conditioned. The air-condition rate from 10 THB to 10 THB. Euro buses rates start from 12 THB to 22 THB and open-air buses rates is 7 THB

Microbus: Microbus, pink-white minibuses share virtually the same route as city buses. The best thing about Microbus is that seats are guaranteed. Fare is one rate 30 THB.

Taxis: Hotel taxis come with fix rates. Public taxis or ‘Taxi-Meters’ as the Thais name are 24 hours available. The charge minimum is 35 baht for the first 2 kilometers and 5 baht for every following. Expressway tolls are paid by passenger, from airport add surcharge 50 baht.

BTS Sky train: The BTS provide cheap, safe and fast. The stations are in major commercial areas and begin by 06:00hrs. to midnight. The fare starts from 10 Baht to 40 Baht per person. Passengers buy the ticket from ticket machines by using coins. The coins exchange is provided at every station.

MRT: Open in 2004, MRT subway service connects to major tourist area. The subway station provides coin-operated tickets, dispensers for single trip. MRT start from 05:00hrs. to midnight, the rate begin with 14 Baht to 36 Baht.

Express Boats: These boats have routes to various ports along the ChaoPhraya River and to as far as Nontaburi province. The first pier in Bangkok is Wat Rachasingkorn. Fare is 10 Baht to 32 Baht.

TukTuks: These 3 wheels vehicles are popular for shot journey. Fare requires to be bargained in advance.

Motorcycle taxis: These unique taxis provide faster but risky, answering the traffic jams. Drivers wear colorful vests. A fare depends on the distance but is about the same as a taxi.

Social Custom

4. Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon.5. Losing your temper, especially in the public, the Thai think is ‘poor manner’; you are more

The Monarchy

Thai people have ‘deep’ reverence to their royal family, the tourists should also be careful to show disrespect for the King, the Queen or any for members of royal family.
