ArtistsShane and Shane In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon writes: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the sun.” For Shane and Shane, the current season can be distilled into two words: discipleship and community. After more than a decade of relentless touring, where the duo played everywhere from the college circuit to worship arenas to far-flung places, Shane and Shane have shifted the focus of their ministry. Rather than cramming as many dates on the calendar as demand will allow, the dynamic praise and worship duo—known for their celebrated guitar work and trademark harmonies—are pouring their lives into others, discipling musicians and training them in their craft. Putting their convictions into practice, the result is The Worship Initiative. What began as an organic spark of an idea has developed into an online resource and community for all things worship. The Worship Initiative is a one-stop shop for training where musicians, worship leaders, and budding songwriters can grow and flourish in their craft and creativity and devotion to the Lord. Laura StoryLaura Story is a songwriter, worship leader, author, artist and Bible teacher. Her Grammy, Billboard and Dove Award-winning songs include “Blessings” and Chris Tomlin’s “Indescribable.” “Blessings” was certified gold in 2011 and inspired her first book, What If Your Blessings Come Through Raindrops. She thought she had her life and everything in it under control…until she and her husband, Martin, had to face a brain tumor, infertility, and a son’s birth defect head on. In her new book, bible study and CD, I Give Up: The Secret Joy of a Surrendered Life Laura shares her powerful story of finding blessing in her deepest pain by choosing to hand over the control she thought she had to God and instead pursue a life of surrender. Laura’s music and writing show God’s love and grace intersecting with real life and serve as a reminder that despite questions or circumstances, He is the ultimate Author of our story, as told in her second book, When God Doesn’t Fix It. Laura has a masters of Theological Studies and a doctorate in Worship Studies, and has served as a worship leader at Perimeter Church in Atlanta since 2005. Her greatest joy is being a wife to Martin and mother to Josie, Ben, Griffin, and Timothy. (https://laurastorymusic.com/)

Keith Getty Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Keith and Kristyn Getty have emerged as two of the most prolific and popular writers of 21st century Christian hymns, including the modern classic In Christ Alone, which has been recorded over 100 times. The award-winning couple, who married in 2004, split their time between Portstewart, Northern Ireland and Nashville, Tennessee with their children. They released their debut album, In Christ Alone, in 2006. It would make its way onto the Billboard Top Christian Albums and Top Heatseekers charts two years later. They returned to the same charts with 2009's Awaken the Dawn. Hymn Makers: Speak O Lord followed in 2011, the same year their first Christmas album, Joy: An Irish Christmas, would hit the Top Ten of the Billboard Christian and holiday album charts. Released in 2013 Hymns for the Christian Life marked the duo's first appearance on the Billboard 200. Highlights from these earliest works were captured in concert on the couple's 2013 effort, Live at the Gospel Coalition. They returned in 2014 with The Greengrass Session, described as "six hymns from the old world and the new." It earned them the number two spot on yet another chart, Top Bluegrass Albums. The holiday album Getty Christmas arrived the following year, and 2016 brought Getty Kids Hymnal-In Christ Alone and Facing a Task Unfinished, the latter of which was named after a 1931 hymn that they reworked for the album. This is his second trip to Carson-Newman. (https://www.gettymusic.com/)

Session and Workshop Leaders

Cliff Duren is the Worship Pastor at The Church at Station Hill, a Regional Campus of Brentwood Baptist Church in Brentwood, TN. From 2006-2012 Cliff served as the Staff Arranger at First Baptist Church, Woodstock, GA where he led worship for the contemporary service and played piano for the blended service with choir and orchestra. Cliff arranges, orchestrates, and produces music resources for various publishers while also producing various artist recordings. He is very grateful for this opportunity to fulfill his passion of creating resources for the local church. Cliff became a Christian at age seventeen and soon after pursued a music education degree from Shorter University, Rome, GA and a master’s degree in church music from Lee University, Cleveland, TN. Cliff has won two Dove Awards for his contributions to church music ministry resources. In 2014 Cliff released his first instrumental record, Tune My Heart: Hymns of Worship featuring piano and orchestra. In 2016 he released a follow-up record, Tune My Heart: Christmas. In March 2002 Cliff married his college sweetheart, April. The Durens’ reside in Spring Hill, TN with their four children; Mac, Sydney, Elijah and Emma Kate.

Mary McDonald is well-known in sacred music. With a career that spans over thirty-five years, her songs appear in the catalogs of every major publisher of church music. More than 1000 anthems, seasonal musicals and keyboard collections testify to her significant contribution to sacred literature. In 2000 Mary became the first ever woman President of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference. In addition, she has served as accompanist for the Tennessee Men's Chorale since 1985. Her greatest desire is "to give God glory for the songs He has allowed me to compose. He alone is the true Creator behind my pen." In 2011, after serving as sacred music editor for The Lorenz Corporation in Dayton, Ohio for more than twenty years, Mary answered a new call. Now she takes her tremendous passion and love for music making directly to churches as an independent artist. She is in constant demand in churches across the nation for Composer Weekends. Mary showed an early talent for music, playing hymns by ear by age 5. She graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1978 and took her first position as an organist at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Knoxville. With the encouragement of music publisher, John Purifoy, she composed her first choral anthem in 1983. She received a second-place award from the John Ness Beck Foundation for her composition Yes, My Jesus Loves Me. Mary and her husband, architect, Brian McDonald, have two married children and four grandchildren.

Marty Parks and his wife, Vicki Ward Parks, have 4 children: Brandt, Jarrod, Stanford, and Sarah Beth. He earned his B.M. from the University of

Tennessee at Chattanooga, and his M.M. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a composer, arranger, orchestrator and producer for numerous leading church music publishers with over 700 compositions and arrangements in print. Marty is the author of Quiet Moments for Worship Leaders (Beacon Hill), a 90-day devotional book based on the Psalms. He also serves as a clinician and workshop leader, and is the Worship Pastor for Wesley Chapel, the inter-denominational congregation of Wesley Biblical Seminary in Jackson, MS.

C. Scott Shepherd is currently the Worship and Music Specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board. For 15 years Scott was the Associate Pastor of Music and Worship of First Baptist Church, Paris, TN, and he has served as an adjunct professor of music for Union University. Scott’s preparations for ministry include a Bachelor of Music degree from Shorter College, an MDiv with Church Music degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate in Worship Studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. It has been a delight for the Louis and Mary Charlotte Ball Institute for Church Music to sponsor and partner with Scott and the TBMB on several church music events.
