Summary of lesson plan:Students will analyse an Aboriginal Image. They will use their detective skills to work out what is happening in each image. This lesson helps to develop students understanding in Aboriginal culture as well as allowing them to practice their writing skills.

Australian Curriculum Links:▪ ACELA1496: Explore the effect of choices when framing an image, placement of

elements in the image, and salience on composition of still and moving images in a range of types of texts.

▪ ACELY1692: Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning to expand content knowledge, integrating and linking ideas and analysing and evaluating texts.

Lesson plan sequence:▪ Display the Aboriginal Images PowerPoint. Allow students to make comments about

the Aboriginal Images. Ask them to respond with writing a short sentence abut each image that they have seen or words that they feel represent the picture ( for example-picture/wordmap)

▪ Question: How did the song make you feel? What did you notice in the pictures?▪ Display one of the Aboriginal Images on the Smart board. Have students contribute

to class discussion by answering the following questions.▪ Describe what you can see. Who could these people be? Where are they? What are

they doing? How would you feel if you were there? How does the photo make you feel?

▪ Focus on students giving detailed descriptions and explaining their reasoning.▪ Provide each student with a different image. They will glue the image into their

English books and will write a response using the above questions.

Christopher Andrews, 10/09/17,
What if they first were asked to explain what the Aboriginal image meant to them? What did they know of Aboriginals?
Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
They could also draw pictures or use colours to provide an option for a response. Using colours to influence and emotion.
Christopher Andrews, 10/09/17,
Personal connection and authentic learning. Use of descriptive words to explain and write the students thoughts, feelings and emotions.
Christopher Andrews, 10/09/17,
Great teacher modelling here and will assist with EAL/D students and students with learning difficulties. Provide EAL/D students with specific instruction in these language features to access meaning in texts (for example model how to combine information from two different sentences to answer a question).Page 38

Music/Cultural links and allows children to use their auditory senses to link the music to Aboriginal culture.
Christopher Andrews, 10/09/17,
Deconstruct and explain visual texts in the same way as written texts. Explain the images in texts, and select a range of visual texts to examine in order to broaden the appeal to the diversity of students in the classroom. Page 35

Maybe try and get an elder in or Aboriginal guest speaker. They could bring gin their own photos to or objects for authenticity?
Christopher Andrews, 10/09/17,
Could also ask them to draw or write in different colours that are the Aboriginal image?
Christopher Andrews, 10/09/17,
I like this as an add on to after what the students have explain of their own view of an aboriginal image. Could we reflect upon the Aboriginal children if any in the classroom/other cultures to, to feed off?

▪ Upon completion have them form a group with the students that had the same image as them. They will discuss and share their finding.

▪ Students then present their findings to the class and will outline what they noticed in the image.

▪ Allow other students to ask questions about the other images in the class.▪ Extension activities: Students can create a freeze frame for their image.

Assessment:▪ Collect and mark student’s English books. Form anecdotal notes on their ability to

answer the questions and if they could accurately describe their image.▪ Students can complete a self-assessment/reflection using the playground slide

image. Climbing the ladder has them describing what they found challenging during the task. Sliding down the slide will have them describing what they found easy during the task.

Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
This is a perfect way for students to self-reflect and evaluate. They could also use colour on the ladder with descriptive words about what they found easy and hard and what they gained from the task.
Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
You can also offer verbal/oral presentations, one on one presentation sand video recorded to. With the use of technology being a key capability of the learning experience for students.
Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
This is a great option to cater for all students needs, especially if there are EAL/D students or students with anxiety issues etc.
Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
Could also get students to write questions down for the groups, so they can work together as a group and present the answers during the next class after a recap.
Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
They could have a group leader to present their findings, take it in turns, or even create a small little roleplay about their findings.
Christopher Andrews, 11/09/17,
Pair and share can be used. They could use the jigsaw activity and group maps where they can write comments, draw pictures about their feelings of the Aboriginal Images.
