DBT STAR COLLEGE INTER-DEPARTMENTAL LECTURE SERIES

An interdepartmental DBT STAR College scheme lecture series was convened as a one-week programme from 23.09.2019 to 27.09.2019. The following lecture series has been organized by the PG and Research Department of Biotechnology

1. LECTURE ON BIOINFORMATICS AND THE TOOLS AND ITS APPLICATIONS

As a part of DBT Star College, inter-departmental lecture series a talk was conducted on the topic Basic Bioinformatics tools on 23-09-2019 by, Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Assistant Professor of PG and Research department of Biotechnology for BCA students. The lecture gave a basic idea about the field of “Bioinformatics and the tools and its applications”. The session was interactive with a few questions regarding comparative genomics and computational drug design. As a feedback student suggested having the presentation slides simplified.

2. LECTURE ON MOLECULAR MARKERS

As a part of the programme, Dr. G. Rajalakshmi, Associate Professor and Head of the Department delivered a lecture on “An overview of Molecular Markers and their applications” to III B. Sc Microbiology students on 24.09.2019. A PowerPoint presentation on the role of Molecular markers in Plant Breeding and Diagnostic assays was done. The students were made aware of the chronological development of marker studies. The principle and applications of DNA fingerprinting/ DNA profiling was discussed. At the end of the session, students clarified their doubts on sample preparation for DNA fingerprinting and evaluation of banding pattern for RFLP, RAPD and AFLP studies.

3. LECTURE ON VERMICOMPOSTING

As a part the DBT STAR College scheme and recommendation, Dr. S. G. Antony Godson, Assistant Professor, PG and Research Department of Biotechnology delivered lecture on ‘Vermicomposting’ in Department of Mathematics for the Under graduate students on 25-09-2019 at C- Block Seminar hall. The lecture started with introduction, various techniques employed, outcome of the process as entrepreneur and professionals were discussed. Following the presentation, students ventured to clarify their doubts pertained to the process and observed for a representative feedback as well.

4. LECTURE ON ORGANIC FARMING

The PG and Research Department of Biotechnology which is Under DBT Star College Scheme organized Guest Lecture Series, G. Brindha, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology delivered a Guest Lecture on “Organic Farming” on 26th September 2019 to I BSc., Computer Science students. The Guest Lecture started with an Introduction to Organic farming, made a

clear view about difference between modern agriculture and its effects which leads to soil erosion and major health problems. Students were encouraged to practice organic farming which played major role in Green revolution and explained about the importance of farmers and their difficulties to harvest crops and also about the effect of pesticides and herbicides on fruits and vegetables irrigation. Students were very interactive and clarified their doubts regarding organic farming and its yield in our country.

5. LECTURE ON IMPORTANCE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

As a part of the DBT STAR College scheme and recommendation, Dr.K. Manimekalai, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology delivered the lecture on ‘Importance of Medicinal Plants’ to the Department of Computer Technology II B. Sc students on 27-09-2019 in their respective class room. The lecturer started with brief introduction of medicinal plants. Further, Phytochemistry, inhibition of disease by medicinal plants, Folk medicine, Preparation of extract and nanomedicine, uses in pharmaceutical industry, and Development of drugs were discussed; the students clarified their doubts on methods of plant extract preparation and drug development.

6. LECTURE ON WASTE WATER TREATMENT

The PG and Research Department of Biotechnology which is Under DBT Star College Scheme organized DBT Star College Lecture Series, Dr. V. Vijayalakshmi, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology delivered a Guest Lecture on “Waste Water Treatment” on 27th

September 2019 to I BSc., Information Technology students. The Guest Lecture started with an Introduction to Sewage, constituents present and its impact in environment, treatment Process – Steps involved, and its application. The session was very interactive and Students of the Department clarified their doubts on various aspects of waste water treatment and how information technology can be used for monitoring of waste water treatment.
