1. CATALOGUE TO THE SCOTTISH NUMISMATICS PAPERS OF LORD STEWARTBYLines in bold indicate that an entry is a collection or series description. These are not items that can be requested.

REF NUMBER TITLE DATE DESCRIPTION EXTENTSTE Papers relating to the

Numismatics Collection of Lord Stewartby

1868-2017 In 2017, the Lord Stewartby Collection of Scottish Coins was gifted to the Hunterian Museum. In early 2019, a small archive relating to it was also donated. The archives were boxed largely following the arrangement Lord Stewartby himself had created when he organised for his papers to be shipped to Scotland. The labels on the boxes were created by Lady Stewartby and a student helper. Items kept together in one box were not always closely related but rather than created an artificial arrangement the original box order has been largely retained.

It should be noted that a portion of Lord Stewartby's Scottish coin collection was stolen in 2007. Therefore correspondence and other papers relating to the missing coins of the following monarchs may be of particular significance: David I (1124-1153), Prince Henry (1139-1152), Malcolm IV (1153-1165), Alexander II (1214-1249), the first coinage of Alexander III (1249-1286), William II (1694-1702) and Anne (1702-1714).

The original box list number has been added to this list so that the box contents can be re-established where it has been changed. When papers are in a paper fold it means they were originally clipped together. The dates for a folder are approximate and some items, particularly rough notes were not dated and may pre or post-date an article or correspodence with dates. The titles are as given on the original packaging (which in most cases was not retained) and if an item had not title content is in square brackets.

Where only a correspondent's name is given (and no recipient), the letter was to Stewart. Although Stewart's own papers date from the 1950s onwards, there are items in the collection that he collected dating back to 1868.

REF NUMBER TITLE DATE DESCRIPTION EXTENTSTE/1 Correspondence 1952-2010 This is an artificial series. The correspondence files at STE/1/4 were clearly labelled as such,

and Lord Stewartby kept the early correspondence regarding his first book at STE/1/2/1-7 and STE/1/3 separately. Other than those, it is not clear that he kept a separate correspondence filing system for numismatics although there are some indications that he did arrange his correspondence: the surname of the correspondent written in capitals on the top right hand corner of a letter and the name of the correspondent clipped to the front of the letter. It should be noted that his working files at STE/2 also contain correspondence. In particular, see STE/2/3/4-22 for other early correspondence.

STE/1/2/2 [Letter from Raymond Carlyon-Britton, Chichester]

25 Jan 1954 He explains that he got the galley proofs from Spinks of the first five chapters of Stewart's book. He then refers to a point in Stewart's letter regarding the James V profile[?] groats but acknowledges he is no expert. He is most interested in the base silver issues of Henry VIII and Edward VI. He hopes Stewart will be interested in English and Irish coins in the future. He thanks Stewart for illustrating a coin of his in his book and names other coins he has which might make good plates in the future.

STE/1/2/4 [Letter from Raymond Carlyon-Britton, Chichester]

15 Jan 1956 He comments on some purchases of Stewart's and how cheap they were. He had not heard of a Edward III 2nd I [?] halfpence and the Edward V halfpence sounds good. He thinks the unpublished Shrewsbury 10/- might have been his. He refers to two other coins [not decipherable] and describes the Edward IV coin he bought which is heavy but farthings are variable in weight. Letter possibly incomplete.

STE/2/1/9 [Volume previously belonging to A H Baldwin, 4A Duncannon St, Charing Cross]

1950s-1990s

Volume presumably originally in the possession of A H Baldwin as that name is written on the inside front cover. It was used for notes on different mints and contains tables of coins in two different hands so it was possibly started by Baldwin and augmented by Stewart. It contains notes on die links and the mints at Perth, Stirling, Aberdeen, Ayr, St Andrews, DVN, Edinburgh, FOR, FRES, Glasgow, King, Inver and Lanark. Approximately half way through the volume are notes in Baldwin's hand on Type I-Type VIII coins again with later amendments. Also inserted in these pages were loose handwritten and typed coin tables by mint and a list of Lockett photographs [these are now in a separate folder]. Later in the volume are lists of Burns illustrations in Stewart's hand.
