Observations/Commentary/Scripting

What are we doing, we are making a safe space for everyone to share because sharing can be scary, right?Once you share, you can sit down

We’ll come back to youYes and no because I think that sometimes the police are scared of the students, which is weirdIt does make me feel safe…I'm going to come back to you, okayIf someone want to harm a student, if someone wants to do that, then the police can stop itIt does make me feel safeMakes me feel like nothing bad is going to happen, but at the same timeI know if something happens, I know there is a policeman to helpWe are wrapping aroundWe are still wrapping aroundWhat if I get jumped or something, then they’ll be there…We are going to come back to youThere is someone watching over me

Let everyone finish, guys- let everyone finishHold on, we are not respecting the norms, guys, we have one more table.

Round of applause for everyone during the wrap aroundWe have a few who didn’t shareWho are the ones who didn’t share

Do you want to share yours?I feel safer because while they protect our safety from harms or danger’s way

So, sometimes, it’s a little scary to share- gets us used to speaking out loud in the classroomA little scary, intimidating… apprehensiveBounce ideas off of each otherGraphic organizerSharingWhat kind of sharing? What’s the first part of the graphic organizer?Adrien?

Journal entries to get you thinking about what we’ve been reading… discussing in class about privacy and security- surveillance… privacy something we value or security….

Raise your hand- how many of you said you feel safeA lot of you value your safety and security on campus as opposed to your privacy

Howe many of you are finished with your graphic organizer for the second textTake 10 – 15minutes to finish them up?No

These graphic organizers are moving you into somethingWritingWriting?I hate graphic organizersThe graphic organizers and the questions we are doing today are leading us into our writing

Questions/Suggestions

How might you get students to hear and listen to one another’s ideas during the wrap around?

What are the steps involved with this assignment? How will you help students stay “on track” with finishing the steps in a timely fashion? How might you create a sense of urgency for students around “finishing” this assignment?

Page 3: anthonyjz.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2014-02-07 · What are the steps involved with this assignment? How will you help students stay “on track” with finishing the steps

What is something we do before we write?BrainstormAnnotateEvidenceVocabularyThings we don’t knowThings we don’t understand- questions we have about the text

We have to get through this first- this is our assessment of the two texts

Quad Pods- finish up the graphic organizersI’m going to go table to table and make sure you are finished

Later this week, we are doing a writing assignmentThoughts and ideas about the writing prompt

This isn’t arbitrary work- work to help you guys-Does this sound goodAre we going to work and finish our graphic organizers

Coming table to table- make sure you are on task

Your conversations should be about the text and the graphic organizersSo you are done with the questions and ready to write?Have you asked your partners for help?I don’t want to get in the habit of coming over here and

In the question about obama’s speech, where would you look for that? Where in the text does that appear? For question 2, where it asks you to… where it says … the author claims that Obama has and will continue to default to protect the country… are you going to write that same quote for your evidence? No. You are going to look at Obama’s speech where he says that he is willing to give up privacy for the people’s security

Fire alarm

So take a minute to re-focus!

Three minutes- working silentlyWorking silently….I’m going to go table to table…

The conversations I am hearing- some of them are not on the graphic organizers or the texts- I am asking you to keep it to the graphic organizers and the texts….

I like how a lot of you are asking me questions to get finished with the graphic organizers….

We are going to take a couple more minutes to finish up, then we’ll do the reflection slip, then we’ll put our papers in order…

What do we write on our reflection slipsWhat are you writing on all of your materials? Name, date, and periodTake the next 3-4 minutes to respond to the reflection question

Questions/Suggestions

Do students have the prompt already? What is the larger value of engaging in this writing assignment?

How might a word wall/word bank be helpful here?

What are your plans for jagged endings here? What do students who “finish” before others do while they are “waiting” for others to finish?

What are the different “independent work time” structures or processes that you have been using?

What are the ways you want students to keep and organize their work?

Page 4: anthonyjz.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2014-02-07 · What are the steps involved with this assignment? How will you help students stay “on track” with finishing the steps

Alright….

Who can read our reflection question? Are you prepared to write?ARre you focusing in class?

Last class. I read aloud your reflection slipsWe read aloud ways you could improve… a lot of you said… did you meet your goals/expectations for yourself?

Write a couple of sentences- I read each one, so…

This is to be done silentlyWe’ll finish the class on a silent note….

When you finish up your reflection slips- how are you organizing your papers… text on the top… graphic organizer on the bottom… reflection slip on the top.. goes in the center of your desk

These are your tickets out, so they need to be finished…

What are we doing next class?

Debrief: We discussed strategies for helping students work during independent work time- and how to help build their confidence in writing. The class is struggling with writing for this district assessment and Anthony is finding a balance between “helping” students vs. letting them struggle through.

We also talked about how to help students to listen to and rely on one another (during both the Wrap Around time and during the “work” time.”

Anthony is working on ideas for how to help students feel more confident in their writing and be able to “get started” on their essays.

We went over the observation rubric and we discussed the “rigor” section- Anthony is wanting to work on questioning and adapting his instruction to student needs. He also wants to work on establishing consistent norms for the class.

Questions/Suggestions

What are your expectations for reflection slips and journals?

Is there a way to make this reflection more concrete?

If these are exit slips, how do you know if they are finished with them if they are leaving them at their desks?
