Membership Report: 96

Safety Report:

A wild person was reported by the president.

No plugging in batteries in the cold pits except with prop off the spinner.

No Taxiing into the pits. Ken will mark the entry to the hot pits.

FPV flying: AMA says we need to stay within line of sight with a spotter, and we should follow those rules. Marsh road off Willow and 101 is a good place for it.

Field Report: It’s in Pretty Good shape. Ray can haul a dump run in his trailer if we pile it up.

Events: No Contests

Flight Proficiency: Will revive.

Old Business:

None!

New Business:

There was a request for a pilots’ station north of the pits.

Hits and Misses

Steve Maller is testing a Teradeck clip 1080p video wyfy downlink system. A $400 item seems to be working well.

An Estes Nano-Copter for $40 is a great Christmas Gift.

Ray says Hobby King has a sound system for $40, but there is a weight factor. $188 from Shock Sound is the same but better.

Sad Stories

Max Willig lost a 2.4 due to antenna being shadowed by the battery at Roosevelt.

Show and Tell:

Dennis showed a Herr Engineering Pitts Special originally built by Kirk Phaling and finished in Brodak.

Jeff Dam showed a night flying jet with a 70mm fan. Needs a 55mph speed to start flying but is very cool with several configurations of lighting.

Ray Showed a Cessna Cardinal he picked up at a swap meet and upgraded.

Mike showed a big ole’ war bird, a P-40 Top Flight at 1/5 Scale. Has a DA 55 with Robart retracts AND a retract tail wheel. He had a little trouble with the flaps, but worked it out. It should come in at 22 lbs finished. There are 11 channels in the receiver.

Matt showed a Twisted Hobbies Cracked Beaver, a 3-D flyer. $150 full up, and lots of fun.

Eric showed two: A 90cm Wiesel and a longer span 120cm version knock off of the first. He bought the bat fuselage at good will. And the Wiesel flies great already.

Dave Santana showed a Mako upgrade, but better, that he made from sheet metal and foam. He can knock off many fuselages very quickly, so he will be ready for a contest soon.

Daniel showed an Aline Nitro 600 Helicopter. 15 minutes on a tank. The electric is quicker to power on, but the nitro gives more stick time. So the electric is good for contests, but for daily flying nitro.

Adjourned:

Ruth Cady won the Raffle. Dennis

OFFICER SELECTION, NOV. MEETING The yearly officer selection will be held at the November general meeting on November 20th. Be there to defend yourself or you will be selected! OK, if you were at the November, you will know that President Mike did not hold an election for the 2014 Officers at the meeting. Rumor has it, it will happen in the December meeting.

TOUR OF THE NORTHWEST Brian Chan

In October we drove north to see the Pacific Northwest. We spent 5 days going a big loop, going North on Hwy 101 and cut across from the Coast to Hwy 5 and back down on Hwy 5. A couple stops that worth mentioning were the Tillamook Air Museum and Evergreen Aviation Museum.

Tillamook Air Museum, 6030 Hangar Road, Tillamook, OR 97141.

It is housed in a giant airship hangar just like the Hangar 2 and 3 at Moffett Field. All wood structure, it is very impressive to see that much wood above your head!

The aircrafts on display includes Aero Spacelines Mini Guppy, Aero L-29 Delfin Bellanca Air Cruiser 1938, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Boeing PT-17 Stearman, Chance

Vought A-7 Corsair, Chance Vought F4U-7 Corsair 13372, Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina, Douglas AD-4W Skyraider, Douglas A-26 Invader, Douglas A-4B Skyhawk, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber, Fairchild GK-1, Grumman F-14A Tomcat, Grumman FM-2 Wildcat, Grumman TBM Avenger, Kaman HTK -1 Helicopter, Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon, Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune, Lockheed P-38 Lightning, Martin AM-1 Mauler, Messerschmitt Bf 109, Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17, Nakajima Ki-43 Oscar Nord 1101, North American P-51 Mustang.

Air museum entrance.

Inside the hangar.

A nice clean DC-3.

There is not much fanfare about this museum, all the planes are just sitting there and you can walk up and look and

touch them. The hangar is about half full of planes, part of them is full of RV, may be an indoor storage yard?? The airport is an active airfield, you can even rent a ride at the shop on the same field. I saw a P-51 came back from a ride when I was there.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress.

The second place we stopped is the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. We stopped in a lot of places but mainly food related, not aviation related!

Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, 500 NE Captain Michael King Smith Way, McMinnville, OR 97128

I visited this place about 10 years ago, when the Spruce Goose was being prepared and not yet open for visit. Now they have 4 big buildings there, the original aviation museum, a space flight museum, a theater and a water park. The indoor water park has a full size Boeing 747 sitting on top and you start the water slide within the 747!

The main attraction, The Spruce Goose.

The main menu is AIRPLANES and there are lots of them around, to the point there are planes on top of planes. One could spend a day just in the aviation part of the museum. With displays ranging from the elegant aeronautic designs of two unknown bike mechanics – Orville and Wilbur Wright – to an actual Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird that can fly at speeds of over 2,000 miles per hour. The centerpiece of these aeronautic breakthroughs is the original Spruce Goose. Built entirely of wood due to wartime restrictions on metals, this massive airplane stands as a symbol of American industry during World War II.

The Blériot XI

The wood overcast?

The angle pieces are wood laminated!

The Space Museum building is just as big as the aviation building, it is not all space related stuffs. It houses aircrafts and space related hardware but not as interesting (to me!) Part of that building houses classrooms and workshops for kids. Actually there were active classes going on so part of the museum was off-limits during class time. I did not go through the water park this time, I guess I am a little too mature for that!

The Evergreen Space Museum.

The Space Museum Building.

The Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum were founded in the memory of Captain Michael King Smith, the exhibits celebrate the lives of innovators, pilots, and veterans who courageously pioneered flight in these remarkable machines.

The drones are housed in the Space Museum.

The drone does not look that much different than our models. Actually, a lot of components used on this drone commonly found on radio controlled aircrafts.

A Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" reconnaissance aircraft.

Grumman Mohawk OV-1 observation & attack aircraft.

The Evergreen Wings and Waves Waterpark.

I found these two museums are good place to visit if you are an airplane nut like me. Expect to spend some time in each to really looking all the aircrafts. I also found the docent in the Evergreen Aviation Museum very knowledgeable and helpful, since most of them served in the military and ARE airplane nuts too. Since both museums are privately owned, there is an entrance fee.

Mike N and his Mini Sparrowhawk.

Team Ourique, Melanie and Robert.

WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO BE HERE?
