Before there was water, there was fire. Once in a while, a volcano hints at the siz-zling magma upon which the whole human enter-prise floats. Over eons, the surface cooled off a bit, and rain sizzled down for thousands of centu-ries, filling the oceans and sculpting the earth. We Christians can catch God’s glory in a shimmering pool of water, but we can also capture God’s burning desire to fan the tiny flames of our baptismal candles into something that will make a difference. In Sicily to this day, there is a custom of scattering rose petals down from the ceiling of church on the heads of the faithful, an effective reminder of the “tongues of flame” descending on the apos-tles, and a sign that the Holy Spirit still is poured out on the baptized. It is not merely a quaint cus-tom, but a fairly potent sign of what baptism does. An interesting sidebar: if you have traced the Epiphany blessing on your doorway in chalk, Pen-tecost is the day to erase it. From now on, no need to rely on the “wise men”—you are alive in the Spirit! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Pentecost Sunday
Domingo de Pentecostés
Spirit of Life
Almighty Father, shower upon us the sevenfold
gifts of your love, that we may bask in your salvation and live lives full of service and joy.
Filled with the gifts of the Spirit, may we go out from our communities, ready to share the fruits of the Lord’s
Passion, Death, and Resurrection with the whole world.
May the Spirit who is our life and breath enliven us
and may our unique gifts be shared with the entire Body of Christ.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Fortnight for Freedom The Fortnight for Freedom will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Please pray the following prayer in solidarity with the bishops' call to penance and prayer to restore religious freedom & conscience protections. PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY O GOD OUR CREATOR, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voic-es heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood - and every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary Immaculate, Patroness of Our Country Pray for Us!
Juan Fisher, San Juan Bautista, arts.

RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT At last! The power hinted at and the Spir-it promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. Try to listen to today’s scripture passages with some sense of how electrifying these events must have been to those who lived through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper room. In to-day’s first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclama-tions in foreign tongues. In the second reading, Paul de-scribes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apos-tles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as reported in today’s Gospel reading, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
