On September 10th, 11 students made a trip to Melbourneto get a behind the scenes look at the Crowne PlazaHotel located on the Yarra River. The hotel is part o theIntercontinental Hotel Group which has more guest roomsthan any other hotel company in the world.

The students were given a guided tour through some othe suites that had amazing views o the Yarra, then were

taken through the kitchen and shown the ood storage areasbeore being taken back to the conerence rooms or themost amazing muns.

The idea behind the tour was to give students an insightinto the dierent career pathways available through thehotel industry such as hospitality management, cookingand catering, human resourcing, housekeeping, rontoce administration, just to name a ew. We had a chanceto speak with managers rom dierent departments whoshared their stories with us and explained how they got to bein their positions.

The main message rom the day was that there is a wholeworld o opportunity within our hotel industry and that sta areall passionate about their work and the people they work or.

The tour was arranged through the Beacon program whocontinue to oer antastic opportunities to our students.

Thank you to all our parents whoattended parent/teacher/studentinterviews. I would also like tothank the sta or the time andenergy they put into the Thursdayevening and Friday. Parents areoten at a disadvantage becausethey are only receiving inormationabout their son/daughters

learning rom one source theirchild. The school now providesmultiple sources o eedback to

parents via the Compass system (log on at anytime andread inormation about your son/daughters day to dayactivities), 5 weekly Progress Reports, Parent/teacher/student interviews and communication via phone callsrom sta and/or the Year Level Administrators. The collegeexpects all parents to monitor their childs progress throughat least three o these sources.

    Eegy diks

To all parents and students: please remember that

energy drinks are not to be consumed by students onschool premises or during school hours. We would alsorecommend that parents monitor, restrict or ban energydrinks rom their son/daughters diet. Many energy drinks

contain up to 13 teaspoons o sugar. This coupled withcaeine and numerous other substances can cause heartpalpitations and other side eects. Dr Conrad Wolsey callsthem a brain chemistry Molotov cocktail. Within the samecan, he says, you have stimulants, antidepressants andanti-anxiety agents. From what researchers know aboutadolescent brain development, adding such stimulantsinto a young persons diet can have a detrimental eecton their mental and physical health.

    Yea 12 Examiais

Year 12 examinations commenceon 30th October and the nal dayor our Year 12 students is 23rdOctober. That leaves only 17 schooldays or students to catch up withtheir teachers or support in their exampreparation. It is vital that students usethe holidays wisely and actor in 20-25hours o examination preparation perweek.

VCAL and VCE students in Year 12 must have all their worksubmitted by Wednesday 13th November.

As we ast approach the end o the school year and theend o secondary school or our Year 12 students it isimportant that students remain ocused on what they aretrying to achieve.

A balance between study, work and social lie is

essential in making sure these hectic last ew weeks aremanageable and ultimately deliver success. We know thata supportive, encouraging home environment will play alarge part in helping students to be successul. A big thank you to all parents who completed this yearsParent Opinion Survey, we were very happy to receivea large number o returns which should provide useuleedback to us on the things we are doing well and areaswe need to improve in. All parent responses were put into a draw or a $250Restaurant Voucher at In2Food in Warragul. The draw wascompleted at our recent whole school assembly and thewinner was Year 7 student Kayla Stewarts amily Mr ChrisWettenhall and Ms Natalie Stewart.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs)were introduced in 1998 as a distinct pathway withinVocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS). Theyare available to secondary school students 15 years andolder, who are permanent residents o Australia.

A SBAT oers students enrolled in the Victorian Certicateo Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certicate o AppliedLearning (VCAL) the option o combining part-timeemployment, school, and training. The program isundertaken under a training contract with an employer, has a training plan signed by the school which is ormallyregistered with Skills Victoria and leads to a nationallyrecognised qualication at Certicate II, III or IV level. Italso includes paid work under some orm o industrialagreement that endorses part-time apprenticeships, such as a Federal Industrial Award, Australian WorkplaceAgreement (AWA), or Collective Agreement.

Like other VETiS oerings, the vocational trainingcomponents o SBATs also contribute credit towardsa senior secondary certicate. Many school basedapprentices and trainees move on to a ull-time contractwith their employer ater leaving school, while otherschoose to continue their education and training at aRegistered Training Organisation or university.

There are benets or all parties in completing an SBAT.Students gain a nationally recognised certicate, real liework experience and nancial remuneration or their workcompleted. The business owner gets nancial supportrom the Government as well as the opportunity to trainuture employees.

At Warragul Regional College Ebony Pierrehumbert iscompleting her SBAT with Lina Wright at Wright BooksBusiness Services whilst Ebony is completing her VCEstudies. A fexible working arrangement allows Ebonyto attend all her school classes as well as tting in therequired 13 hours o work each week.

Jessica Snape is about to commence her SBAT withKasey Wilson Racing at Bunyip whilst she is completingher VCAL studies. The VCAL timetable enables Jessica towork on a Wednesday and a Friday.

The school would like to thank the two businessesmentioned or their support with the program as wellas the support o Lisa Johnson rom MEGT in helpingto organise the SBATs. Parents, students and businessowners who would like urther inormation regardingSBATs should contact either David Stevenson or SarahTaylor at the school.
